Okay, I've sprained my ankle for the 2nd time in my life. It happened last Sunday. Went to doc, had xray, etc. No breaks, just a mild sprain. Now the swelling has gone down, it's black and blue underneath the ball along the "corner" of my foot.

My question is for the past two days, Ive been having a "numbing" feelin shooting halfway up my leg whenever on it. Mainly from high ankle to lower shin area. I've been able to walk the whole time, unlike my previous sprain where I was on crutches for a month.

Is the numbness normal? Or does it mean something else is wrong?

I'm hoping some of you have experienced this and can lend some insight/advice.

    Thanks.

Numbness could be coming from some lingering inflammation thats putting pressure on nerves in the affected area. This would usually cause numbness because its a true nerve compression. If you got any anti-inflamatory meds from your visit, finish them as prescribed. You may also have done some nerve damage that would just take some time to heal. Although if it was a grade 1 sprain, that would be unlikely.

as many know on here i sprained the hell outve my ankle in NY for the c2c game.

but also....it was my chronic injury in highschool and college football....i now have a ridiculously weak left ankle, and have literally rolled it on many occasions stepping on a toy or something.

i know that sometimes when you sprain it.....iam guessing you rolled it.....you might have strained some muscles up your shin, or given yourself some shin splints. it has happened to me multiple times. take your healthy ankle and roll it in your hands the way you injured your other ankle....you will see your upper calf muscle flexes and your muslces over-lapping your shin flexes as well......now imagine twisting your ankle harder then how your doing it.....those muscles will tweak.....and maybe even get some slight tears.......i believe the numbness is completley normal......ice it and stretch your calves....get some blood flow to them....

iam no Dr....but from my experience of literally around 10-15 ankle sprains....this is a normality

    hope this helps

Well, I'm on my 2nd week out from work now, this sucks. My latest symptom is, for lack of better descriptive term, a "fire" goin on in there. The region at and above my ankle has been hot for the last 2 days. Almost like by blood is boiling. I ice it down and it feels better but then it comes right back. I went to bed last night with my ankle on fire and when I woke up this morning it is the same way. I've been off it mostly this whole time, goin on 9 days now. Goin back to doc today. He didn't even prescribe me any anti-inflammatory meds 1st go round. Just said to take advil or alleve. I'm guessin he gives me them now.

I just need this thing better by apr 16th dammit! I am not missing my Pinehurst golf trip because of this, lol.

    Thanks again for the replies.

If it is just a sprain, then the only thing to heal it is time. Make sure you ice it as often as you can though.

I would make sure the doc does his due diligence in terms of making sure its just a sprain however.

What did you find out at the Doctors? I am wondering because the burning sensation can be a sign of healing, or a sign of infection. If the Doctor didn't give you anti-inflammatory meds, just pick up some over the counter Ibuprofen (Motrin). You can take up to 800mg every 6 hrs with food.

Was this a high or low sprain?

The burning has gone down after numerous heat treatments. I thought it was crazy to treat a "heat" sensation with heat, but it's working. The doctor ruled out infection but I do still have the burning going on. Actually, when I do get those feelings it's more up my leg some than anywhere else? I'm guessin it's just nerve damage or something? I hope. It is a high ankle sprain and it's still very stiff to this day. It hasn't even been two weeks so I guess it just takes some time to come back around. I was on it quite a bit today and it has swelled up a little and it still hurts to touch. I hope this is all normal. I don't have the greatest confidence in my doc.
