Perhaps we should see what happens first this year before really concerning ourselves with next? A big part of the answer will be determined by a new collective bargaining agreement and what it says or doesn't say.

I don't see us keeping Ronnie unless we franchise him. I think Pennington, Ricky, Ferguson, Fasano, Carpenter and Bess are givens. I think we'll get a better idea of Allen's future after draft day.

As soon as the team is set for the 09 season, depending on the cap situation, you extend Brown ASAP! You don't wait for the end of the season, we have our answer at RB for many years right now, you don't let that get away!!!

I really doubt that they resign Ronnie Brown. That isnt Parcells deal, runningbacks are relatively interchangable and expendable. Especially given the expense of the OL, it is unlikely they pay much

I suppose it can be fun to speculate.....

    1. Pennington - if he plays as well this year as he did last year, then yes I can see us trying to extend him.
    2. We won't keep both Brown and Williams. I think we'll look to trade Brown.
    3. If Fasano continues to get better and doesn't want to break the bank, we'll probably resign him.
    4. Roth will be back. He was SO good against the run last year. I expect him to be much improved this year. And I think the FO knows he's a valuable member of the team.
    5. Ferguson probably will be offered a minimal contract - take it or leave it. Depends on Soliai, Cohen and the draft.
    6. I think Williams will be back. The guy seems to be in Parcells' good graces. He won't ask for a fortune and he won't insist on being the feature back.
    7. I think whether or not Will Allen comes back is going to be largely dependent upon his own opinion of himself. We just watched a starting corner and a starting safety from last year sign elsewhere because they wanted more than we were willing to pay. If Allen overvalues himself then he won't be back.
    8. Culver and Jones - the market will determine whether or not they'll be back.
    9. If Bess and Haynos continue to make progress we'll get them locked up.
    10. Carpenter we'll probably keep.

I'm watching him right now. Ironic, eh? Tough runner, whose got a beautiful stiff-arm and is pretty quick. I don't think he's as fast as he's timed but he's pretty quick. I think he's a real possibility if they look at running backs.

Another guy I like is Javarris Williams of Tennessee State. He's taken quite a bit of carries at the university I believe but he's got good quickness, he's patient with holes and shows some power. Reminds me a bit of a poor man's DeAngelo Williams.

If Pennington plays as well or better as he did last season, we need to hang onto him. I know we have Henne in the wings, but for the most part he's still an unproven commodity.

Must signs - Will Allen, Ronnie Brown, Jason Ferguson

I think think they will do what they did for Camarillo with Bess and give him a 3 year deal after they see him play a few games this season.

I think Patrick Cobbs plays into their plans alot more than people expect. They made sure to resign him early on, and if you look at Boomer's list, they have spoken to all of like one true runningback whose name escapes at the moment

Part of the reason we are trying to stock draft picks this year is because that is such a big list, similar to the Patriots situation.
I think quite a few of them will not be back next year, Penny, R&R, Ferguson, Martin etc. We are not paying premium prices for aging vets, we are looking to upgrade via the draft this year and next, and signing younger FAs.

Well with Ricky we have him as long as we want him. He still owes the phins 8 mill for his signing bonus when we first got him. I hope we resign Ronnie but if he gets injured again he'll probably be gone. We might resign him then trade him. Pennington is probably a goner. Jason Ferguson will probably depend on the draft. Maybe we resign him if we don't draft a replacement. I'd like Fasano, Roth and Will Allen to be resigned if possible.

We're going to have a lot of openings at the end of the season. Makes this draft all the more important.

So many people are quick to just say let Penny walk because we have Henne. The question still is this...What if Penny lights up the NFL this year and is a pro-bowler again? Henne is still young and unproven. Why are so many people wanting to toss out Penny so fast?

I would love to resign Ronnie but it doesn't seem like a Parcells move to hand a big money, long term deal to a 29 year old back. I hope he stays but I'm not sure it will happen.

Will Allen and Jason Ferguson I would keep at the right price. Penny I would keep if the contract is incentive based and hes willing to deal with facing competition from Henne every year til Henne finally beats him out.

Fasano, Bess, and Carpenter should all be affordable players and should be kept as they outperform their cost by a healthy margin. That could easily change for Fasano if he gets a bigger then expected deal but something like a 3 year/10mil extension sounds about right for him.

I think RW and Martin are replaceable even though I do like Ricky. Roth is a wait and see proposition.

Upside. Penny really isnt going "light up" anything. He may pull another year like last out where he is solid, efficient and turnover free mostly. But Henne has the talent and ability to take us to a level that Penny really cant.
Plus its a matter of money. What happens if we sign Penny to another deal for big money and then he sucks? We have a backup with a major pricetag clogging us.

Its about moving forward and planning for the future, rather than staying status quo. Could it backfire and bite us? Yes it could. Could it propel a marginal playoff team into a contender? Yes, it could. We have to hope the staff if able to create the latter situation.

Because people have short memories. You would think with the struggles we have endured at the position over the past 10 years, as fans we would cling to Pennington for dear life. I really hope we end up being smarter than Jets fans when it comes to Pennington. They didn't appreciate his talents either, and it earned them the legendary embarassment of them watching their castoff lead our team to the playoffs and the AFC East title.

He does? What have you seen to prove this? He's an unproven commodity. Yes he has upside, but you don't toss out a productive, proven QB for an unproven for all intents and purposes rookie, IMO.

Chances of Cedric being there in 4??? If so, I wouldn't hesitate!!!! I'm a ACC guy so I feel Peerman and my very own James Davis are severely underrated this draft. ????????

    Bingo!

The only caveat is that we don't see Henne in practice and the Trio do. Of course, there's a big difference between practice and a game. Its easy to look off a safety when you're wearing shorts in Davie. Its another thing to do it in Foxborough when Vince Wilfork is about to cheap-shot your knees!

His physical tools are greater than pennys. Please dont dispute that. Notice I said the dreaded "could" word. He very well "could" flame out and be cut after his first starting season reminding of us of Ray Lucas. Or he could lead us a to a super bowl.

Bottom line, we know what we have in Penny. A relatively consistent mistake free player with a measureable upper level. Hes getting older as well. He has not shown a knack for playoff success.
We are building a team that will in all likelihood start making a serious SB push in '10 or '11 (barring a work stoppage). I dont think Penny is going to maintain a "probowl" caliber of play for 3 more years when he hasnt done that in his career yet.

Bottom line is Henne WAS drafted to be the starter. He was drafted to BE our franchise QB, and he WILL get his shot. It has been said by the staff. We are not handing a mountain of money to Penny to stay and then be unseated by Henne.

The names in red are guys that I believe are locks to at least be targeted heavily for a return in 2010. Everyone else is expendable, Pennington of course depending on the progress of Chad Henne. A lot of those other players... well, it depends on whether or not a young guy at the same position steps up or not.

I'm not disputing that. But that does not mean Chad Henne is a better QB and can be more productive than Pennington. You stated he could as if it were a fact.

I'm not saying Henne doesn't have the tools to eventually be the better QB. But it's certainly no fact at this point. I'll trust the FO and Sparano to make the right decision regarding QB when the time comes. If Pennington plays at a high level this season, I don't think they let him go.

Any doubters need to only look at the following:
    http://www.nfl.com/stats/categorystats?tabSeq=0&statisticCategory=PASSING&season=2008&seasonType=REG

Any short comings on offense shouldn't be attributed to Pennington. He finished with a completion % of 67.4.
We had injuries to our interior OL. We had problems with our running game at times. But Pennington played well.
I actually expect him to play a little better this year. Our OL should be stronger. That in turn will help our running game. Plus he'll be more in tune to our WRs - where/when they like the ball, etc.

history shows. I'm not even sure Ricky will be resigned.

If Ronnie isn't resigned I hope we can atleast trade him for a draft pick or picks...
