Wow.... I can see very very bad repurcussions from this. It might not cost him in the draft, but I do think somewhere down the road, probably during a game (And OH what a violent game it is) somebody is gonna be gunning for him
Even if you give Matthews the benefit of the doubt that it was just a joke, that just seems like an incredibly stupid thing to do. I think that may even be dumber than smoking pot the day before the combine. At least with pot you might believe that you could beat the test by drinking water or something, but how can you think creating a national group won't be noticed by somebody in the country?
Actually, that is a very good point. Also, by smoking pot, you are really only hurting yourself. By making such a blatantly bigoted statement, you really hurt everybody
He and other white players were called that by some black members of the Team and they made it as a joke. I don't see a problem in it, But I can understand how people would take this thing out of control
As sensitive as race is these days a joke like that is in poor taste and potentially dangerous to one's career, even in jest. It's not like it was done on a personal level and everyone involved knew it was an 'inside' joke.
I actually believe that it was a joke. I may be naive but I do try to assume the best in others. I'm just bothered by the stupidity of the act.
What do you expect when your dealing with kids at that young of an age? The group was made 2 years ago and I never seen anything to believe it was racist. The name White-Nation does not have anything to do with any other race and I have not heard of anything said bad about any other race.
It was clearly a joke because if it wasn't they probably would have gotten their asses kicked by the black players on the team.
I hear you, you're preaching to the choir, the name alone evokes images of skinheads and white hoods, and I am not sensitive in that manner. Funny how much trouble the 'net can get you in these days.
This is obviously not racially driven. He probably just wanted to create a Penn State group and chose a bad name (which is dumb, but not racist). And the quote is obviously referring to the Iowa Hawkeyes, because of their black uniforms. I think everyone needs to stop assuming everything is race related.
I hope the patriots draft this guy and ronnie brown lowers his shoulder and bashes some sense into him.
I, for one, do not want anyone who is a racist or someone this stupid on my team. If I'm the Dolphins, definitely Matthews and probably Cushings and the other lemmings come off my draft board.

Yeah its crazy. People getting fired, releases from team, and I even know of people who hire people based on there facebook and myspace. Like I said before I do not see this as racist, But I know how it can very easily be taken that way. Its sad that he is already being judged on this..
Its a joke, and it clearly isnt a pro racism joke either. Their biggest crime was probably using humor that isnt obvious to the most oblivious. It was probably a reaction to I think Bill Bennett
I dont think its anything more than a joke, but when you post this out on the internet for anyone to see, these things tend to get blown out of proportion and taken out of context. In week 3 if the coach of whatever team hes facing prints out that blurb and tapes it to the locker of black athletes, do you think they will all realize its a joke and laugh about it, or do you think quite a few would be quite offended and looking to teach someone a lesson. Inside jokes should stay that way and I have a feeling someone is about to learn that lesson.
Not surprised since he's from U$C (i.e. dumb enough to make that and probably familiar with U$C's crime-ridden off-campus neighborhoods). I don't think it was meant to be racist since I'm sure their black teammates understood the inside joke but still not a good move.
This is actually old news. The dates on that article are "Published: Friday, March 16, 2007 Updated: Wednesday, July 2, 2008" "Sedrick Ellis sent Gopaul a message explaining that "White Nation" is an inside joke on the team and that Matthews is not racist." If there were going to be some repercussions directed to any members of that group during a football game, I'd think they would have happened by now.
This is being blown way out of proportion... Teams intentally do this stuff right before the draft to question a players character. The week before the draft is when you will hear the craziest things about a player. The group was clearly made in jest and that fact that it was made 2 years ago and quickly deleted shows that he was just a young College student that did something wrong, realized it was wrong than quickly decided it was a bad decision. On a related note I just heard that Quarterback Dan Marino was using Crack Cocaine last season at Pitt. Maybe that explains why his numbers dropped. I just hope he falls far enough for us to draft him.
Really? Not sure there is any other way to "Read this" Of course I think it was done in a joking matter. I still think it is beyond poor taste.....
