I haven't seen enough of Hartline to comment, but I'd guess Ronnie would be our 2nd Wildcat QB. Maybe the Ohio State guys could give more accurate info on Hartline?

The ol' Shoot is an extreme example of a spread-to-pass offense. It involves motions and complex option routes. The philosophy basically boils down to pass first, pass last, pass only.

We took White because Ronnie is a poor thrower, or so it has been said. That's another reason why we may have taken Hartline.

    :dunno:

I'd rather the team dominate with a base offense than try 5 or 10 special package plays a game to make something happen. Its nice to have the option when you need to shake things up a bit but Shula managed to do that just fine without all the fancy stuff. Unless the WC usage percentage goes up appreciably the White pick will be a luxury and at 44 it will remain a reach. Now if someone says we drafted this kid because he's going to be a heck of a QB and we ranked him higher than Mark Sanchez well then its an excellent value pick.

i think he might end up beating Henne for the full time QB job. i have no problem with that, as long as he wins the job fair and square. But even if he doesn't, he will definitely be used specifically in the wildcat.

Pat White is Mike Vick on steroids, without the dog fighting controversy. By the way after teams see how successful we are with Pat White at the helm of the wildcat, i believe more teams will take a chance on signing Vick.

I wish Pat White was taller, but from what i've gathered he hasn't had a problem getting his passes batted down b/c he throws with a good arch and he's accurate!

After watching that video, i'm surprised he was available when we picked him!

I don't see any of our Chads on the field with Pat and Ronnie at the same time. I think the point of this is to make the QB a useful player. Not the chad as a dummy wide out.

If the Pats seriously planned on taking White, then we really blindsided them when we did, because after all their trades involving 2nd round picks, they had those two right before us at 40 and 41, then didn't pick again until 58. If they wanted White, they must have not considered any teams in between 41 and 58 to be likely to draft him before them. If so, it seems to me they would have used one of the picks, 40 or 41, on White. Or else their interest in White was less a priority than in Butler or Brace.

if pat white can be a starting qb in the nfl i will feel better about the pick. i think he is an excellent athlete and hope he can. but getting a guy who will be on the field for 5 or 8 plays a game with that pick is tough for me with other folks availble. don't even get me started on hartline with #108.

You must have gotten that from what I posted on here Sunday:

"Reach or not, I love the pick. Do I like the fact we have taken a "QB" 3 years in a row in the 2nd round? NO! However, this one is different. He will be able to be a Randell-El type at WR. He won't be a game changer, but you will have to account for him on the field. Especially with reverses and the quick slants. However, the wrinkle he brings to the Wildcat is where the true value in the pick is held. Now he can come in and run, hand it off, or pass the ball from the Wildcat formation. Last year we threw the ball 2 times, maybe 3, out of the formation. 1 was for a TD, but that was it. The threat to throw with Ronnie never existed. Aggressive D's, like the Ravens, could load up to stop the run because they knew we would not pass the ball from that formation. Now that all changes. Pat White can not only throw the ball...but he can throw the deep ball well. Is he our future at QB? Who knows. Can he be very productive right off the bat getting 10 touches a game in the Wildcat formation? You better believe it and that is what you expect from a 2nd round pick....production!"

Thanks for just taking what I said and adding more words to it. I guess we can say it was your own work. LMAO!!! :)

Pat White Thrilled to be in Miami
    http://www.dailymail.com/Sports/WVUSports/200904260634

After months of speculation about Pat White, who would select him and where they'd use him, the former West Virginia quarterback landed with the team he was connected to first.

The Miami Dolphins, who ushered in the Wildcat formation last season with great success, picked the NCAA's all-time leading rusher among quarterbacks with the 12th pick in the second round (No. 44 overall) Saturday.

"I am excited to see how they can utilize my talent," White said. "They have a lot of great players in Miami, from wide out to running back, but I just want to get out there and win games."

The Wildcat, which has been mimicked across the league, works best with a quarterback who can pose a running and throwing threat, which is a rarity in the NFL. The Dolphins used running back Ronnie Brown at quarterback and kept quarterback Chad Pennington on the field as a receiver.

    White adds a new dynamic.

"I have heard a lot about the Wildcat and I am happy to be a part of it," said White, who ran for 4,325 yards and 47 touchdowns and passed for 5,576 yards and 52 touchdowns with the Mountaineers. "I can play multiple positions, so I'll see where I end up. I'm ready for anything."

I mentioned that you can see some of Whites former college plays in his highlight reel that look very similar to our own Wildcat scheme. White see's the same when watching our Wildcat:

What he'll see in the Wildcat may look familiar.

"It reminded me of West Virginia a little bit, when the defense goes one way and you shoot someone out the other way," he said. "It keeps the defense on its toes."

The Dolphins offer White additional liberties beyond the Wildcat. Skeptics questioned White's ability to play quarterback in the NFL, learn to play receiver and contribute as a punt and kick returner.

Well, the Dolphins have Pennington and plan to start Chad Henne by 2010. They invested a second-round pick in backup John Beck in 2007.

Miami also selected two receivers in the draft and have receivers Ted Ginn and Davone Bess in the return game.

White will have to produce, but the immediate demands are reduced in Miami, though White's desire remains high. He refuses to give up on playing quarterback.

"I definitely still have confidence in myself," he said. "I'm looking for the opportunity. I got a great opportunity down in Miami. I never doubt myself. I know that I've got to keep working and try to get better. That I'm willing to do."

White was a coveted prospect and his profile soared as the draft approached. He met visited the Minnesota Vikings Wednesday. The Dolphins, though, remained intrigued after watching White at the Senior Bowl, where he was MVP, and the draft combine.

    - Ireland and others on White -

"I got to see him throw the ball a lot more than I had seen in the past," General Manager Jeff Ireland said. "Obviously, you knew his ability as a runner but that was primarily why I was going to see him was to see him throw. I know quite a few of the coaches there and our scouts obviously know a lot about him. Our coaches have a great vision for the player. Obviously the Senior Bowl and the Combine and the practices and the scouts reports helped and I felt really good about him."

Ireland wasn't alone. Former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback and ESPN analyst Ron Jaworski said White had "as good of mechanics as any quarterback" he evaluated in the pre-draft process.
"What I saw was a quarterback," Jaworski said. "Everyone talks about (White as a) wide receiver or a Wildcat quarterback. What I saw was a quarterback with outstanding fundamentals who threw the ball very well."

I'm surprised so many evaluators in the pro ranks see White as a gifted passeras well as runner. He's very popular with all of them. Mayock went so far as to say yesterday that he expects White to contribute now in the Wildcat and later to compete with Henne as our starter from our base sets. Wow!

White ran for 4,325 yards and 47 touchdowns and passed for 5,576 yards and 52 touchdowns with the Mountaineers. I'm still waiting on someone to tell me his QB rating each of the past 4 seasons....
    So in all:
    99 College Touchdowns
    9,901 Total yards from scrimmage

I agree with your thread Mike, I think the Wildcat is the beginning of a much larger innovation in this league than the run and shoot though.

I see this as the most versatile of all offenses with the quarterback running the ball as often as he throws it.

What I really like is also having the conventional QB (Henne), because it gives the opposition fits having to prepare for two schemes.

Career QB Rating: 147.37. This is calculated differently for NFL and NCAA too btw
If one calculates his QB rating with the NFL formula it is 99.83

Matt Stafford Career QB Rating NCAA formula: 133.3 and NFL formula: 85.6
Mark Sanchez: NCAA 153.87 and NFL 103.93

I was waiting on this to be posted because it's the first time ever, in all my years I can remember a guy with a QB rating of over 125% over his career being questioned on whether or not he can pass the ball. Then on top of it he has a strong Senior Bowl showing and a strong Combine showing throwing the ball.

    Career QB Rating: 147.37.

He compares quite well with the other top QBs too in ratings.

At the combine, they measured ball velocity and White was lower on this though at 52 mph. Sanchez and Freeman were both 57 mph. Graham Harrell was also 52. Mike Reilly who many say has the best arm in this draft was at 58 mph and Stafford did not throw. 58 was the best of any there and 52 the lowest. This surprises me because White's passes down field look stronger than Harrell's do to me.

6002 and 197 were his combine measurements. I think that is what they are using. If we can add about 10 lbs of lean muscle over the next year or so, I think he will be just fine. That would make him exactly the same size as Brees.

Whilst I appreciate that most people can be made to look good in a 5 minute compilation clip on Youtube, I have to say that this guy does look something special and I can't wait to see how we utilise him. I have to admit I didn't see a QB being an early pick here, but if it annoys the P(r)ats it's even more of a sweet deal! :)

I wonder if Chad Henne is feeling nervous now? My guess is that he was hoping to see this season as his break through year rather than 2010/11, but suddenly he finds he has gained more competition for a starting slot. My guess is that Pat White won't be pushing for a starting slot this year, but does anyone think next year he'll be pushing to start every play, not just the wildcat?

WildCatPat won't threaten Henne (at least in the short run) but make him work harder.
he'll be too busy actually playing football to be concerned with who the #2 to Pennington is going to be.
I'll share with you two thoughts:
    1) may be that we actually wind up with a Co-Offense, virtually utilizing two QB's (TandemQB's). This will depend on how well the WildCat develops as a legitimate attack instrument in the hands of Pat White.
    2) Pennington is the starting QB. trust me, he won't go quietly into the night. Someone will have to win the position from him. What happens if he comes back in great shape with an injury free shoulder, protected by the Orca-5 & passing to an improved WR corp & running game in place. He can consistently connect with a deep pass if he has time to set up & is uninjured. I honestly think he may surprise a lot of people this year. Chad Pennington is already one of the top QB's in the NFL, a ProBowler & Franchise QB selected by Mr. Bill Parcells himself. Don't be too quick to write him off.

    Hi the 23rd,

Thanks for your reply. My post was not intended to write off Pennington - I think he's a quality QB - it was more to say that Henne is probably better than a lot of people give him credit for and I think he'll be pushing for a starting slot this coming season rather than the following one.

But now, not only does he have to barge his way through Pennington, he also has the new kid in town making sure he still has to look over his shoulder. Competition for places is good for the team, but it's not always good for the individuals involved as someone will be missing out! :)

Orca 5? Wouldn't it make more sense for our team to at least make it to the AFC Championship game before anointing any unit on our team with catchy nicknames? This OL has a lot of potential, but at this point they have not earned any cool nicknames.

I do agree about Penny. He is our starter until someone else proves on the field they deserve it more

i honestly cant understand anyone who isnt excited about the pick..i think its less then you say.

This is our offense, we are the true innovators, we just picked the master ninja of the wildcat, if you have a pulse and a love for the dolphins, then imo, you should be doin backflips. If there are people who are negative about this pick, then i just wouldnt trust their eye anymore.

This cat is special..To watch him operate this offense is amazing, all of the little things he does, the slight hesitations to let the play develope, the proper hand technique with the ball, his deception fakes, his fundamentals are off the charts. its ridiculous how much value he brings to our team, hes gonna be a star..

not even smart NFL people have a clue as to what were doing.

IMO, this regime did not in any way take white to compete with henne, the plan is to use two different qb's, operating two different offenses in the same game..why is this so hard for people to grasp, the wildcat is a weapon and we just signed the master...however, you 100 percent want to keep your traditional offense with the other weapon, which is henne, its the combination working together about an 80 to 20 ratio thats so damn facinating..hennes got skills that pat white can only dream of and vise versa.

If you like Pat White listen to his WVU head coach Bill Stewart rave about him here: http://www.wqam.com/index.php?page=347&sid=mge8c8ei828s9sae10o7k0pdgq4v1fc2

It has to be taken with a grain of salt but he says, if you count the senior bowl, he has won 5 Bowl games, MVP for 4 of those 5. He thinks Pat can be a receiver and track the ball in the air as he was a center fielder in baseball. Pat can throw against cover 2 and quarters. Pat can throw and read defenses. He also says he isn't worried about Pat running the football. As I said...grain of salt.

It looks like the Pat White smokescreen continues. !

I'm betting we see alot of Pat White early and late in the year

    From PFT:
Fins Playing Shell Game Regarding Pat White?

"In a Tuesday morning interview with Jorge Sedano of 790 The Ticket in Miami, Dolphins coach Tony Sparano addressed quarterback Pat White’s role on the team in his rookie year.

And we’re starting to get a feeling that the Fins don’t want anyone to know how they plan to use the former West Virginia quarterback.

Sparano initially reiterated that the Dolphins drafted White to be a quarterback. Later, however, Sparano gushed about White’s ability to “do a lot of jobs,” which implies that he might do some moonlighting at other positions.

Then there’s the Wildcat. Asked whether it’s a safe assumption that White will be heavily involved in the specialized offensive attack, Sparano said, “That’s an assumption. But I don’t know how safe it is one way or the other.”

Then Sparano pointed out that running back Ronnie Brown did a “tremendous” job in that role a year ago.

Bottom line? Sparano and the Dolphins will keep their Pat White cards close to the vest, in order to keep Miami’s opponents on their heels.

Our guess? There will be a Wildcat package with Ronnie Brown taking the snaps, and there will be one with White taking the snaps.

And don’t be surprised if White is in the backfield on some of the plays when Brown is the one who gets the ball from the center."

We stand nothing to gain by annoucing ANY of our intentions on how we'll use Pat White, but frankly I think it's crazy to think e'll do any less than lead the Wildcat most the time. His ability to throw will unlock it's full potential and he can operate the Wildcat system at a higher tempo than anyone else.

    From the Herald:

    • Several players expressed excitement about Pat White's addition and the prospect of even more offensive creativity. Although Ronnie Brown loved operating the Wildcat, he said it was ''good'' Miami drafted White and will not be disappointed if White assumes that role.

''This will take our team to another level,'' Davone Bess said.

The Dolphins kept their approach simple with White at rookie minicamp but will add new elements for him this summer. Coach Tony Sparano keeps saying he likes how Brown operates the Wildcat, so White must earn that job and has the ideal skill set. Brown and White also figure to play together a lot in that formation.

''Ronnie can throw it, but Pat can throw it better,'' Anthony Fasano said. That's key, because opponents stacked the line and blitzed the Wildcat at times, unconcerned about Brown's ability as a passer.

Brown said White's arrival ''will open more opportunities, add new wrinkles and keep the defense guessing.'' Greg Camarillo, eager to see what offensive coordinator Dan Henning has ''up his sleeve,'' said ``it's as exciting to learn the Wildcat as it is to watch it.''

The Dolphins are intrigued by the idea of using White in spread offense formations at times. ''Pat White,'' Ted Ginn Jr. said, ``will be great.''

I knew when I saw this bump that you got some juicy tidbit. I interested in seeing how the Wildcat plays this season.
