Interesting tidbits in this article on Pat White... Parcells and Bellechik's interest in him as well.. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/...hins-pat-white-wildcat-042809,0,5837186.story This season is going to be very exciting once we have the full package in of plays for White to run........ teams are not going to know what hit them...
Maybe it's the fact that Pat White is the hometown kid and I've met him and I really want him to succeed, but I do think he will be very successful with the Fins and I know some people are doubting this pick right now, some even bashing it, but I say just wait and see what he can do for us on the field because he is talented, versatile and above all, really damn good. If nothing else, we should be as exciting if not more than last year to watch on offense.
It wasn't a traditional pick early in the second round, but that doesn't mean by any account it wasn't a really good pick. I can't judge it until i see how it works out, I hope they put him in a position to succeed and that he takes advantage of the opportunity.
as soon as I read that Parcells called this last fall, I was estatic.. we are going to ram this formation down everyone's throat and bring in a new era of offense... and I hope they don't like it.
I agree. I think this could be a tectonic shift in the NFL. Pretty exciting that it is happening in Miami
I still have a huge problem with people calling this offense a gimmick. Yeah it's not your traditional formation, but we are lining up our eleven guys vs their eleven. Line up and stop it and if you can't it doesn;t mean it's a gimmick. Is what the Patriots did in 2007 a gimmick when they threw the ball 750 times a game even when they were up by 50 with 4 minutes to play in the 4th quarter?
How could they be excited? It's going to cost the coaches hundreds (yes - Hundreds) of hours watching films, revamping key reads, etc so that they can slow the WildPAT down. The old Wildcat system had a weakness. Ronnie Brown couldnt pass effectively. The New WildPat won't have that issue. Moreover, Pat White is much more dynamic facilitator of the scheme. Basically, the nutshell version is this: Teams must now have a base defense with all the previous reads and keys, and a new complete defensive system with keys and reads for the WildPat. Nine in the box will no longer slow it down.
I's liek people that play Madden saying Motion is cheese, or anything they can't stop is cheese. It's a Gimmick because I can't break it down and stop it. PUUULEASE
I loved this quote: "For the 30 minutes it takes to put in a Wildcat play it takes a defense a day to figure it out and work on how to stop it," former Miami Dolphins coach Jimmy Johnson told WQAM radio last week. Talk about making it difficult for your opponents to prepare for you. I believe that eventually every team will have a version in their playbook but I'm hoping that we'll have a year or two where we just do it better than everybody else.
I did have White rated as a potential NFL starter so I wasn't as critical of that pick. I think his mechanics, accuracy and arm strength are very good. And I like his decision making. He strikes me as a football player. IMO a very large percentage of draft busts occur when teams draft "athletes" instead of "football players".
Revolutionize? We will see, I like the White pick more now that I can look at him as a potential starter at Qb, meaning our Front 7 is adequate, but it's a big step from 4 basic plays to revolutionizing the NFL as this offense has been run before and it was stopped before in the NFL. I'll grant the huge difference between the 40's and today is passing offenses and rules are slanted to favor the reciever and Qb. Should be fun though, I wonder how many SEC games some assistant coach is going to be forced to watch and edit?
I said in some other thread: drafting Pat White in the 2nd round means we have big plans with him. If it were in 4th...5th...I'd think it would be a wasted pick. That's why I like the pick,, he will be very involved.
I love seeing people on here starting to get behind this pick. A lot of people seem to like the pick that aren't even Fins fans, I've had three people this week tell me they thought the Fins had a good draft and White was a great pick. I think this pick will bring attention to Miami (not as much as Sanchez in NY of course) and it seems people not even fans of the team are excited to see what will happen.
I wonder if everyone called it a gimmick offense when the '47 Steelers used it as there base offense and went to the playoffs with it? Hmm.
So according to this, New England was interested in Pat White? Percy Harvin has said that New England told him they would take him in the 1st if he was there. Maybe my theory of us trying to pair Harvin and White is on base. Looks like New England had some interest in it. I still question though how serious New England was about Pat White. They had 2 picks before us in the 2nd. They have Brady and that's a real different situation from us. It would be hard to take Brady off the field or out of a play in the middle of a game, let alone for 10-12 plays which is the minimum where White would warrant the necessary value to be taken in the 2nd. There's no way Tom Brady isn't involved in 10 plays on offense.
i guess a lot of us limited the offensive side of the ball in the draft because of Chad -- that in addition to Pat White's size ... taking him in the second is a statement ... even if it was based on fear that someone else would grab him (the same reason we probably didn't trade down in the 1st with Davis). we likely could have traded down at both spots and gotten our same players -- but the FO knew what they wanted targeted them and took them as soon as they could. that is also probably the reason for drafting additional WRs ... we will need more than Ginn, Bess, Cam and London to effectively run a 4 WR set. same for the addition T ... with overloading a side with 2 Ts ... just lots of options for the offense ...
Well, it could also mean that if the Pats couldn't draft Harvin, they lost interest in spending high draft picks to try and implement it.
Agree. If you think about it, what the Phins are doing is analagous to Bobby Fisher's "Random Chess", in which all the key pieces on a board are redistributed to differing positions, thereby voiding the "key reads" your opponent would rely upon to defend your opening moves. The Phins are pressing the "reset" button on 50 years of football, making things like "key reads" that have been taught to players since JFL null and void. The best part of it all? We're on the right side of the power curve, and with the White pick, look to stay there.
WildCAtPat is a starter from day one. he'll hit the ground running & passing in the Single Wing. He'll also be groomed as a WR & probably do the returns that GinnJr. was drafted to do. Could be in the midst of the development of a new paradigm in Offense in the NFL. the TwoHeadedMonster of Co-Offense & Tandem QB's may emerge in 2009.
I wish someone else would remember this; I remember when BP first signed on with the Phins, he spoke to his vision. He said more or less that he intended to change or be a trend setter concerning the direction he was taking this team. He spoke about the size that the lines were trending to and he was going to counter the trend. It didn't mean a whole lot to me then, what he's doing now though indicates he does intend to be a trend setter. Does anyone else recall reading this?
