I wouldn't push this too much yet...I mean Jason Taylor definitely didn't look like his old self last year
That's because last year, he was conditioned for dancing. This year, he'll be conditioned for football.
Especially on long passing downs, it is going to be very tough on QB's as they won't have much time in the pocket
He was lined up over the right tackle all season long, JT is at his best coming off the shoulder of the LT or blitzing through the middle. Many of us predicted his production would plummet because of this. Then add on the injuries and that made for a bad year. We'll push it alright. Because last time he played for us he was a force. And that was not long ago. Same thing happened with Joey Porter in 2007. For some dumb reason we lined him up as a DE going against the RT. As a result, you saw Porter have his worst season. In 2008 we move him back to his natural position and he clicks of 17 sacks. All Data suggests JT will be a force if put in the correct position.
We may have the most accomplished duo of pass rushers, but what will upgrade JP and JT is the new defensive backs, if Davis and Smith can cover, both will have more time to sack the Qb, add in Wake and we are cooking with gas now. I'm excited about this season, JT is an upgrade over C Anderson and pretty much every other nickel type rusher except for cam wake.
I also dont see a lot of true pass rushers in those combinations, giants lead all, but Joey and Jason are pure pass rushers that can line up all over the field..puts us close to the top for sure..if wake is the animal we dream him to be, oh boy.
Am I the only one that would rather have the Giants or Cowboys duos? The numbers are little skewed, I would imagine JT & JP probably have quite a bit more seasons under their belts then some of these other combos.
I'd forgotten about his knee. The Pats have problems at OLB now, signing JT (though it's debatable whether he chatted with and was going to NE in the first place) denies the pats a proven OLB, and they didn't take one in the draft. They were talking about trying Crable at OLB.
There's definitely some fierce duos out there. Freeney/Mathis Ware/Ellis Osi/Tuck Harrison/Woodley Merriman/Phillips
I think it depends on the scheme and defensive alignment. If we're talking about four down linemen then I will take the Giants line all day. If we are talking about three down linemen and four linebackers, I'll take the Steelers duo and then ours. Freeney doesn't seem to be the same guy since he got that contract extension. He had a nice year last year but he doesn't seem to be the same guy that dominated over a short period of time leading up to the contract. I think that there are a couple factors to that though, one is injuries and the other may be that he's been focused on more; he was said to be the most dominating defensive end in the league and some NFL coaches were interviewed about Freeney and they stated they have to specifically gameplan there offense in a different way because of him. Merriman is dominant against weaker teams (see Oakland) but not the same player when facing tougher competition.
There is a danger of being wrong about players in the NFL if you rely on past performance to predict future performances. JP and JT have the most combined sacks, but as for this season that means little though, I expect someone will have a great season, and the other two (Wake included) will have a so-so season simply because someone will be able to take advantage of 1 on 1 blocking schemes. But who will it be?
IMO, when people talk about Jt as old, injury prone, and his performance level last year, I just laugh. I really feel he will return to the form he was in before he was a redskin. Maybe Wash wasnt a good fit. Porter and Taylor will be a duo to be reckoned with. You know what else, Langford and Merling are really happy right now with whats ahead.
He was hurt last yr and he played out of position. He's going to be a situational player for us and yes could put up very good #s.
This is what we talked about before the 2007 season, didn't we? I wouldn't get ahead of myself. Not again.
I was waiting for someone to mention it. Taylor isn't going to return to his old defensive MVP self, his role is going to be greatly reduced. We all thought that Joey and Jason were going to become a fierce duo (myself included) and it didn't turn out that way because they both play the same position. Porter is the starter and Taylor is going to find himself as a situational pass rusher. I love optimism, I love when our fans are excited, but not all optimism is good optimism. Lets not get carried away with a player who is a few years removed from his best seasons, who is less than a year removed from sustaining an injury and who isn't going to be playing a starting role on this team. I too hope that he helps us now that he's on the team, but lets not get carried away.
I would not be surprised either. It's normal. Were hoping they will limit his time on the field so it doesn't show as much.
True that, I like the signing, but the JT of the .gifs is not the JT we are getting back, even still though, 10 sacks from him would be huge for us.
my question is: if Taylor and Porter are better suited to play at the LT side, how will we line up both at the same time with no loss for one of them ?

Didn't say they lost a step or anything about Mathis; I simply said that Freeney doesn't seem to be as dominant as he had been before the got the deal and I gave two reasons why that may be true.
i know this to be true from the game of fantasy football. He's definitely not the same as he use to be.
