Well, we've already done WR, RB, & QB, why not the Defenses...so which is the best?

No secret what I think. :shifty:

I think you cant really say who is at this point. Its def between NY and Miami, but both have their weaknesses. NY has a great secondary, but I feel their LB are the weakness of the defense. They added Scott, yes, but as history has been proven, good linebackers that come from Baltimore to new teams end up being busts. Want me to prove it? Ed Hartwell to the Falcons, Jamie Sharper to the Texans, Adalius Thomas to Patriots. AT hasnt been to bad, but nothing like he was in Baltimore.

As for Miami, they have a good front seven but their secondary is suspect. They will have too rely on two rookies to contribute right away against the division with some of the best WR. They had one good pass rusher last season, but now JT is back and that will help out Peezy, Roth, and Wake.

Your last statement gives this away. Miami's weakness is the secondary, too young and inexperienced to be better than the Jets. We really don't have any weaknesses other than depth on the defensive side of the ball.

As for your statement about Scott, he has left Baltimore, yes, but he will still be in Rexy's system. Just something to remember. :wink2:

    Go Jets!

Heading into the season, I'd say Miami simply because Ryan hasn't proved anything as of yet, he has a rep, but he hasn't produced results for NY.

To me, alot hinges on JT and Wake vs V Gholston, who can do the most to improve their units.

Besides, it should have been broken up into positions not the whole enchilada, Cb's Safeties LB's Dlinemen all sort of need their own thread.

All in all I did vote for NY, but we really cant say who Clearly is the better defense yet because we havent seen them play yet. What happens if Vontae Davis comes out as a rookie and plays like Reevis has for 2 years. What happens if Gholston has a breakout year? (wait lets not get to ahead of ourselves ) All in all, we will probably have to wait til OCT 12th, where the rest of nation will help to decide.

How long did Lito Shepherd ride the pine in Philly? Two seasons?

The Eagles basically traded Shepherd for Ellis Hobbs, something seems wrong with that picture.

As for Safeties, I'd say Miami has the best tandem, NE is in flux, the Bills Safeties are more like linebackers, and the Jets have good, not great safeties.

Sure, minus Ngata, minus Suggs, minus Ed Reed..

Very true statement, Cam coming from SD was a great O-cord, but failed big time as a head coach, really what has Norv Turner done as a head coach? Fat Albert, I mean sexy rexy hasn't done anything but talk trash to our LB.

I haven't voted yet and I might not, the gap between the Phins, Jets and Pats is too close to call IMO. I want to see if Miami can create pressure on a QB before I vote.

    Word.

Also need to see if a cornerback opposite of Will Allen can emerge this season. I think Sean Smith turns some heads and starts this year, but that's just me.

We need to know if these free agent pick ups are as bad as Rex Ryan "says" they are... not to mention if they can create some pass rush as well.

New England, well let's just see how they do without Ellis Hobbs and their geriatric linebackers..... :shifty:

    From the Rb thread.

Disagree PS17, you've added Leonhard and Scott and Marquez Douglas and subtracted Abraham Elam and Kenyon Coleman.

Fundamentally, every other starter will return in 2009.

I think the jets defense is solid as well as the pats. However, i think miami is a step above the jets and the pats' D is aging. Therefore i voted Miami.

How'd you get past the bouncer at the door? Guess they'll let anybody in here :wink2:

As far as your original question, there's been too much turnover on defenses in the AFC East this year to accurately judge who has the better unit. However, based on talent, coaching and cohesiveness of the players, it seems to be a clear competition between the Patsies and Miami.

There isn't a complete defense as good as the Jets have, on paper. We'll see how Rex Ryan's scheme works and if it works well, the Jets will be the best defense. They have more pieces than anyone.

Miami is the best proven defense, for now.

Miami. We have the better front 7, and we have more depth. Also, Our secondary is better than any secondary in the AFC East, yea I said it.

Where's The 23rd? We need some nicknames.

How did the Bengals defense turn out when Marvin Lewis (who's defense was one of, if not the best defense in NFL history) took his system there?
It's the players on that Raven's defense that makes them great, not the system.
Lewis left and his defenses have sucked, Nolan left and his defenses have sucked. I'm noticing a pattern there.

Rex Ryan's scheme was COMPLETELY different and Marvin Lewis had better talent than Rex Ryan ever did in Baltimore. Also, have the Bengals or 49ers had as good a roster of players on defense than the Jets do this season? I don't believe so. Neither definitely didn't have as good as of a Nose Tackle like Kris Jenkins or Safety as good as Kerry Rhodes or Inside Linebacker as good as Bart Scott or Outside Linebacker as good as Calvin Pace.

You really can't go by last year's stats to judge who currently has a better defense. Mangini & our defensive coordinator screwed everything up for us on defense last year. We had the talent, it was just used in an awful way. That is why I'm not going by last year's statistical comparison. You are right in that the Dolphins were better defensively.

This season, our roster is much more complete on the defensive side, we added depth, better players, and most importantly - Rex Ryan and Mike Pettine.

Didn't Kris Jenkins lose his endurance at the end of the year? If I remeber correctly he was sucking air towards the end of his last 5 games. Not exactly what you want from the anchor of your 3-4 defense.

Let's see, Scott on one side and Pace on the other side... Carry the 2, that's around 90 million in contracts for 2 linebackers. You had better hope they combine for at least 30 sacks. Not to mention what your paying your outside LB, DE Gholston to ride the bench. Meanwhile in Dolphin land, we have Jason Taylor, Joey Porter, Roth and Wake taking up, maybe 12 million for the year in cap space. If I were a Jets fan, I'd be more concerned with the front office and less so about the defense.

No. I am aware that Miami's defense is improved. When I look at the Jets though, I don't see any holes or weaknesses. When I look at the Phins, the secondary is young and inexperienced, and they were spotty at best last year in coverage. The Jets really don't have any holes.

well being improved is only half the story. What you are basically doing is discounting how our defense played last year, with a big hole in the secondary fyi, discounting how your teams defense played last year, and making your defense top rated, based on what talent level you believe you have. You don't think thats a little convenient?
