This should be fun to watch to see how much improvement Gholston has made.

Well, it is hard to tell with a young player how much improvement they may have made in the offseason.

Rotoworld, it also has Ryan basically saying Nacho Sanchez will be the starter for the Jets this season.

But also Ryan could've went into Training Camp with an open battle with a couple of young guys that the organization really likes. He truly believes Vernon is going to play at least a decent role in this defense this season. Probably when Calvin comes back it will be more of a 3rd down only type thing, but he does truly believe in him. Which is encouraging, I guess.

I however am rooting for Jason Trusnik to get as much time as possible on the field while Pace is out.

Oh no buddy, Trusnik stays on the sidelines and Tarzan, the 6th overall pick, plays.

Trusnik can play some good football Gholston...we'll see.

Which makes for an interesting sidelight 124, R Ryan has no track record of developing players, whne he got to the Ravens the pieces were alread in place, he merely had to line them up, in NY the situation is different, he also has to develop some talent which is one of the real challenges a fmr Assitant Coach turned Head Coach faces.

He was a Ravens coach 2000-2008. Yes he was only DCoordinator the past 4 years, but he has been a Raven for the entire decade. He helped develop plenty of players, including Terrell Suggs. Suggs was handed to Ryan when he was a rookie because the Coordinator at the time (Nolan maybe?) couldn't deal with him. He told Ryan that Suggs was his problem (Ryan the DLine coach/D assistant at the time). That is the best player he himself developed. He views Gholston in the same light. I guess we'll see in time.

If you can find a transcript to Rex Ryan's first press conference, you could. He said in this first Press Conference that Suggs was his responsibility and Gholston reminds him of Suggs. You can maybe look around NewYorkJets.com, they might have the PC in the Multimedia section with the videos.

Hmm...I'll look around for something as taking Ryan's word for it is not quite enough to really prove anything.

I looked at every draft going back to 2000 and what I found was interesting to say the least, the Ravens typically "hit" on their #1 pick, with Suggs, Reed and Ngata all making large impacts, however there later picks, the developmental ones, rarely made a large impact on the ravens* team.

*I have to asterisk that because I'm not a Ravens fan, I did notice the names of the 3rd through 7th round picks did not stand out to me, and that may explain why Ryan basically traded away his draft for 3 picks, two on offense.

Ryan, it appears, likes Veterans and occasionally inserts rookies/young players but only as accents on the starting 11 not as players, they are fillins moreso then keys to the defense.

If I had to bet I'd think Jenkins is being counted on to be a huge factor for the Jets this season, ditto Thomas and Pace, Gholston will play only because he offers some upside otherwise Trusnik would get the nod (IMO)

I don't think and never said he was lying 124, not at all, but keep in mind the Ravens traded a #2 pick to the Pats to move up to draft Suggs, he was going to play either way.

What I am saying is if you look at his track record, going back to 2000, it is clear that Ryan can help a #1 pick develop, however the rest of the draft there is little development that happened and in NFL 2009 and beyond a team has to have production out of those longshots as that frees monies to spent on other areas of the team.

I'll grant Ryan developed reed, ngata, suggs, but find the 2nd through 7th round picks he developed, the list is sort of short up until 08 even Leonhard started out with the Bills, Scott took years to make it into the lineup, he came into the NFL in 2002...

Leonhard was hardly anything special in Buffalo. There was a reason that he was signed as a reserve. He improved because of Ryan and lets not be blind here, but because of Ed Reed as well.

As for Scott, he was a UDFA, takes time to develop those players, most of the time.

I believe it took Scott like 4 years to start?

Would you be willing to wait 4 years for Gholston to become any good?

No, because Gholston was a 6th overall selection while Scott was an Undrafted Free Agent. Big difference.

Scott started in Year 4, Gholston should be starting this year. He wasn't undrafted. He is held to a higher standard.

Eh, player development is player development, if a guy take 4 yrs to develop, then that is how long it will take.

Hmm...I know, how about we trade Jason Allen to the Jets for Vern Gholston?

JA is further along on the player developmental curve, you'd be getting a steal!

No thank you. The last thing we need is another person in the Secondary.

I'll gladly trade you Gholston & Ferguson for Long & a backup ILB with experience (Torbor?). :shifty:

Hmm....we wouldn't have enough room under the cap, Ferguson and Gholston are both top 6 picks with huge contracts....who aren't very good players yet..
