http://www.palmbeachpost.com/state/content/gen/ap/FL_Clean_Bathroom_Scare.html You'd be amazed how many people mix ammonia and chlorine when cleaning, especially floors. I've run across it dozens of times in my restaurant days, in an enclosed space the gas can overwhelm you. Who the hell wants to croak in the crapper from Chlorine gas inhalation? Be careful fellow Fin Fans.
This is an excellent warning. Back in the 80's the mother of a friend of mine died when she mixed bleach and ammonia while cleaning her bathroom. It definitely opened my eyes to the dangers of this stuff.
She was a really nice Cuban lady that liked to keep a spotless house. You really don't think too much about this stuff since you buy it at the grocery store but it can be deadly.
I walked into the mens room one time to take a leak and damn near puked the moment I walked in. Had to damn near drap the busboy out and close off the room for the rest of the shift, the gas was so bad. He was sweating, eyes tearing, coughing and gagging, probably could have succumbed to the gas if he didn't have the wits to leave. And judging by his condition when I walked in he probably lacked those wits.
Damn...some cautionary tales here. Honestly, I thought it was as common knowledge not to mix bleach and ammonia as not going out in the cold without a jacket. Guess not, though; maybe some consumer education (re-education?) is due. With as disconnected as the current crop of twenty-somethings seems to be with domesticity and its trappings, it could be a life-saver for a lot of folks.
Chlorine gas is liberated in the reaction and can be deadly but, a bit of Clorox in the gene pool is not always a bad thing.
