I wouldn't be shocked if part way thru the season that both Davis and Smith are the starting CB's. And if not during the season, next year probably for sure.
There's a reason why we spent two high round picks on DBs even after we spent some $$$ in free agency on Green. Not all players are going to pan out, and even then, some take a few years to get going. In the NFL, if you look at all the mid-late round draft picks performing better than the first and second round picks, that says all you need to know... no matter how talented or successful you are in college, the NFL is a different animal. You take a couple players to "fight" for one spot, then you go with the more productive player. Nuff said.
I was much, much more interested in Sean Smith from the get go. From what i've read about he seemed to me to be exactly what we needed. That said the players seem to think highly of Vontae by all reports and he's trying to soak as much info as possible. it seems to me that Vontae is on track and will be a valued contributer. it just means that Sean Smith is ahead of the curve and is already ready to displace Eric Green a solid but not exceptional starter. Vontae isn't doing bad, he's doing fine. Sean Smith is just doing very, very well and that's simply good news for us.
constructive criticism based in the reality of the situation. Sparano gave a big lecture in todays press about this very thing. you are probably right in you're assertion that the guy isn't approaching the training camp properly.
Not being ready to do your job when asked or expected. Not taking the steps to rectify the problem so that the next time it doesn't reoccur. Mature people are more apt to do these things, immature people will be more likely to shrug it off and say it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter as much if you take steps to fix the problem, but not taking steps shows a lack of commitment.
Oh, and that snippet totally showed he was being (or is) immature, and not trying to correct mistakes. I know immature people are more likely to shrug it off. But it doesn't show anywhere that he did.
If you only look at the one incident you're right, but there has been more than one incident. You can't ignore the fact that his maturity has been questioned before. And when you see multiple incidents that make people question his maturity then there is reason for concern. Pointing that out doesn't mean you've written him off, but it does decrease his odds of success. Of course he can change or overcome the problem but it is one more thing to change or overcome. Succeeding in the NFL is difficult under optimum circumstances.
Vontae will be vying for the nickle spot IMO... which is no bad thing for a rookie CB. We've were very lucky to also get Sean Smith...
Nor does it show that he has taken any steps to correct it. If both are true then at best it is a push. But is a push a good thing when discussing this? I wasn't insinuating he was one way or the other, but it will be interesting to see how he does.
I remember great hopes for another DB that was a high pick & had all the tools & intangibles we're still waitng on the Jason Allen promise to be delivered think about it
I think come gametime tomorrow, we will see a CB named Davis ready to show what he can do. He will be fine.
