I hope they give the kid one more week to show some improvement. his up side, I think, is that good. It's a tough thing to field punts and kick-offs know that 11, ok 10 1/2 guys, are charging right at you.

I hope they give him one more week to prove himself, they should make do nothing but field punts like hundreds a day.

That, or have Ireland have a Football Prayer Meeting with Mr. Williams with Tuna waiting in the golf cart...it worked for Dan Carpenter..

I do think CW should have one more game to prove one way or another it's preseason so it's not the end of the world if he muffs another one, but if proves he can get the job done, then we have a returner with some upside.

What bothers me about that picture is he is not watching the ball into his hands.

Lets see...last week he almost had a safety on his return when he caught it inside the 10, ran backwards and sideways before being taken down inside the 1. This week he has this blunder.

Some kids have it...some don't. You can't teach speed. You can't teach focus either. He lacks focus. This picture proves that and further explains last weeks blunder.

And the preseason is for player evaluations, it costs us nothing to give Williams another crack at the return job.

Though the Bills are shopping Roscoe Parrish and I like C Williams but Parrish is a whole different level.

Except when this coming up game is the most important of the preseason and those that are going to get the playing time need to get the most of it. Having someone on the roster, getting those reps, when someone else should be back there isn't a good thing.

If it was going into week 2, I would say sure...give him another chance to redeem himself. However, week 3 isn't for that.

Disagree, week 3 or 2, if Williams does flame out, D Bess will return punts, if he succeeds, then Bess stays at Wr, either way though the Team will have a better idea what they are working with and whether or not Williams is worth the opportunity cost.

He didn't look THAT good last week. He had one good return where he got out of a tackle. Everything else was avg to below avg.

Unfortunately with our schedule we don't have room for giving people chances. You need to be able to step up and play right now. He hasn't shown that he his capable mentally to handle this role.

We'll see, negative speculation is as bad as positive speculation when the truth of the matter is, in less than 100 hours or so we will be playing again, if Williams does not have another shot it will be apparent.

There is no such thing as an important preseason game. Preseason is about getting the system down, getting reps, building chemistry, building stamina, and yes making mistakes and learning from them. Nothing that happens in preseason is going to doom our chances of making the playoffs, these games mean nothing in that respect. Knocking this kid after 2 preseason games is silly and not what I would expect from our folks.

He's fielded dozens of punts/kicks in college. Hands and lack of focus were never a problem. IMO, his muffs and mental errors in the first two games are nothing more than jitters from being on such a big stage for the first time. NMSU isn't exactly the SEC or PAC-10.
The kid has too much natural talent and past production in the roles to just pull the plug on him so soon.

Thank you for being the voice of reason Larry.

If we had somebody else to plug in there that was so much better, Williams wouldn't be in the games to begin with

I think the kid gets at least game 3 before they drop the boom

well in his defense, when you're the only 5'7 guy on the field you'd be pretty damn nervous too.

I haven't watched the game yet so I can't comment on CW but Parcell's specialty and arguably his favorite area to coach is punt returners.

I hope so, but seeing Armstrong, Bess and even Hartline out there returning kicks or punts in the 2nd half wasn't a good omen IMO. I would have liked to seen CW getting the 2nd half kickoff.

He should IMO be given some time running pass routes too in the next two games too. His hands could not possibly be worse than Armstrong.

If that's a problem for him then take himself off the field. A punt returner needs huge balls not height.

Never say never when it comes to football and football players. Anyone who does is just setting themselves up to be the butt end of a joke.

That is why I stopped with the knee-jerk reactions a long time ago.

It's also why I won't write off a rookie from a small school who gets nervous and makes mistakes in his first two preseason games.

There's little doubt to me that Williams is going to wind up on an NFL team in the regular season fielding returns. Will it be the Phins? I have no idea. However, I do have the suspicion that if we try to cut him and sneak him onto the practice squad, some other team will snatch him up, and he'll be returning for them, and I'd hate to see yet another player that we gave up on blossom with another team.

I think the kid has some major potential. I've heard what his former coaches and teammates have to say about him. I'll admit that he has a lot to learn, but, I'm not even close to writing him off.
