Last I heard it might just be surgery to remove bone chips which is good news for Santana and the Mets.

On Wagner, the Mets basically traded 3 million plus for 2 PTBNL and draft picks.

Oops. My mistake, I wasn't thinking while typing. The Mets obviously aren't. The Sox will get the draft picks if Wagner declines arb with the Sox.

Yep but the sox would be crazy to offer arbitration for a minimum of 8M. hes not getting that on the FA market. he may love closing but Im sure he loves money too

Of course I think the Sox will offer arbitration. He already said he wants to be a closer so he'll most likely decline it. If he doesn't decline the Sox can still trade him to another team in need of a closer. I bet he could get around 4 to 5 million bucks on the open market.

Well at least this time its addition by subtraction:

The Mets announced on Wednesday that Oliver Perez will have season-ending surgery to correct patella tendon tendinosis in his right knee.
And, down goes another Met. Perez is expected to be fully ready for spring training, but that doesn't make the litany of Mets injuries any less absurd. The left-hander finishes his forgettable season 3-4 with a 6.82 ERA and 1.92 WHIP.
    Source: New York Daily News

Also, forget about JJ putz for the rest of the year as he's been shut down. He's going for a MRI and may need TJ now. Guess we wont be picking up that 8.5M option for next year.

Between, Delgado, Schneider, Putz, and a ton of other guys there's about 35-40M coming off the books for this offseason. I know the team is having financial troubles this year because of the Madoff thing and the new stadium but there have been rumors that the Coupons are looking to cut payroll. Not sure if we will see that money reinvested in the team. I wouldn't mind that if some of the kids like Brad Holt and Jenry Meija were closer to being ready for full time duty. As it is I dont expect a very busy offseason in the Fa market. I think we may look at a couple of high character players like De Rosa and Wolf and go to war with what we have, assuming we resigned Maine to be our #5 and Francoeur to everyday RF.

Im thinking its gonna look like this in 2010:
    C: Thole/Santos
    1B: Murphy
    2B: Castillo
    3B: Wright
    SS: Reyes
    CF: Beltran
    RF: Francoeur
    LF: Fernando

Bench: de rosa, Evans, Cora, Sullivan or Reed, and Santos

De rosa will play anywhere, anytime someone needs a day off and will get about 550 AB's. Best case scenario would be we shed Castillo somehow and let him play 2B everyday.

    Staff:
    Johan
    Pelfrey
    Wolf
    Maine
    Perez

    Feliciano
    K Rod
    Figueroa
    Parnell
    Stokes
    Green
    Micsh/Filler

I love that there were like 4 1B that went before Ike and he was universally killed for his performance against lefties and now hes handling Lefties and got a higher OPS then Smoak and some of the others picked before him. Ike is gonna be a stud. I just wish the guy he was drafted with, Reese Havens would get his butt in gear and catch up to Ike.

I think either Reyes or Beltran is traded this winter. And we need a better pitcher than Wolf.

I've had it with Reyes, I can't put my finger on it, but I would now have no problem with him being traded.

Ken Rosenthal had this to say about our injury situation this year: http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/9...their-players?

My take on it is this: Clearly, whatever Peterson was doing was working. Just because we got rid of Peterson it doesn't mean we continued doing what we did while he was here and seeing how this staff has mishandled injuries over the years it wouldn't surprise me if we deviated from what was working. Any time you have 14 players on the DL the medical staff has to have at least some accountability.

Switching sports to draw a comparison; the 07 Miami Dolphins ended their season with, what, 17 players on IR? They switched medical staffs and with many of the same players, many of whom had a history of injury, had the fewest man games missed of any team in the NFL last year. A good medical staff that knows how to prevent injuries is one I will take any day of the week over one that knows how to treat injuries.

Not only is Rosenthal's article disturbingly correct at a time when piling on the Mets would seem convenient, it points out the obvious that is sometimes missed. One thing it fails to mention is the WBC. Many of our players who are now hurt participated in the tournament. It should be the last time we let anyone play there. Perez showed he cannot be trusted to come to spring training in shape, something many of us felt long before the WBC which merely gave us confirmation. Beltran's knees are too important to this team to risk. Delgado, Putz and I believe Reyes were also WBC participants. Wright's injury was a fluke but why take a chance over something this meaningless? And there is no reason to ever let your pitchers, especially your franchise guys like Santana and K Rod increase their workload for some meaningless bull**** tournament. That baseball doesn't have a place in the Olympics is a travesty but I'm a Mets fan, not a fan of Venezuela or any other country (no offense to anyone who is Venezuelan) when it comes to baseball. If this year doesn't teach this organization to take a hard line stance against this tournament they're bigger idiots then I thought.

If we trade Beltran the excuse is built in because of his salary. You just say youre trading him to fill more needs and open up salary space for Reyes' option year in 2011. If you got a good package of young players ready to contribute no one could really argue with it.

If Reyes' is dealt Ill go ape. For starters, we would be selling low on a top 15 player. Secondly, this park is tailor made to suit what he does well, run. There is no better spot for Jose Reyes then here with the Mets. He, Santana and Wright are your cornerstones. Theyre still young enough you can still build around them and neither has really hit their prime yet. Think about that when you say you want to deal them. Beltran's different, he is in his prime, his value will only get lower now that hes 31. He has 2-3 real prime years left. If you trade him now you've sold as high as his value will likely go.

Where would I deal him? Given his salary the options are limited but Joba and Austin Jackson or Phil Hughes (and like 2 level prospects) would entice me. Bowden, Buchholz and Ellsbury would entice me. Just put them up against each other. Boston could use another bat and the Yankees could definitely use some defensive help in CF; with Damon and Matsui coming off the books the spot would be available. Just throwin it out there :shifty:

Met fans will have to wait to see Chris Carter, word is the Yankees put in a claim for him and obviously the Sox pulled him back. It's too bad it really screws over Carter who probably would have played a lot for the Mets in September. Now he probably has to sit out the whole month of September. Too bad.

For the uneducated on this how does this work? I thought that if the player was involved in a waiver deal then they don't have to claim waivers.

Ok here's the quick run down. From August 1st to August 31st, teams can put players on waivers and 4 things can happen:
    1. Player passes through waivers without any team claiming him, making him open to being traded to any team without restriction.
    2. Player is claimed by a team and the two teams work out a trade (i.e. Billy Wagner).
    3. Player is claimed by a team and the team gets him for nothing but has to take on his contract (i.e. Alex Rios).
    4. Player is claimed by a team but is pulled back and therefore cannot be traded to another team for the rest of the year.

So basically that means the Mets will have to wait until the season ends to officially get Chris Carter from the Red Sox. It sucks but it happens at times.

Agreed, it seems like a petty thing to do but it makes sense for them to do it. By doing it it keeps Carter on the Sox 40 man roster for the rest of the year.

I dont care about that. I care that they may cost Carter his shot for the Mets. This offseason the mets will get some players back from injury and there may be less opportunity for Carter going in to next year.

Wright comes back on Tuesday...at Colorado. Oh, the irony. Maybe Ryan church will board the flight just for old times sake.

Beltran was finally able to run the bases without pain. He's supposed to have a precautionary MRI but may be back before the end of the year. Why theyre bothering I can't tell you for the life of me.

Razor Shines has had 16 runners thrown out at home, the most in the bigs. Tatis running through his indecision on Sunday was just another example of how unfit this guy is to be a 3rd base coach. If they want to keep him on the staff thats one thing but as a third base coach this guy is the suck.

If I were running the Mets, there would be no way in hell I'd let Wright get on that plane. I'm not sure if Wright had been traveling with the Mets on the road recently but I probably would have told him to stay home and just work out at Citi Field. He might be 100% healthy but why risk it in meaningless games now? It's just dumb, I don't care how bad Wright wants to play or show how tough he is.

Agreed on Beltran, why even bother. Tell him to rest up for next year already.

Thanks for the info. I still would have held him back in NY all that time. After Colorado they come home for a 6 game set, I would have activated him then. Especially since their travel in September isn't bad at all. I still think it's a dumb move to bring him out to Colorado for 3 games.

Nice to see David hitting again. Looks good as new.

Angel Pagan is one interesting player. This guy is good enough to play everyday if he starts to play smarter. He runs like the wind and plays like an ideal leadoff or 8th hitter. Use him like we used to use Roger Cedeno. he could be an ideal layer for Citifield; gap hitter with a ton of speed and good enough defensively.

Carlos Beltran will make his return to center field tonight in Brooklyn in his first rehab start, and the Mets believe he clearly is healthy enough to answer all of the critics’ questions.

Beltran has been sidelined since June 22 with a deep bone bruise on his right knee, but Mets assistant GM John Ricco said that the latest MRI showed significant improvement and that Beltran is now playing pain-free.

John Maine has been throwing live batting practice in Port St. Lucie, Fla., and he could throw a minor league game if he improves enough before its season ends.
