Well, I just got it. Red, Green, Yellow with a beepbeepbeep. Disc won't eject, nothing.

I'm out of warranty to top it all off.

I'm gonna call Sony in the AM and see what happens. I'll let everyone know how that conversation goes...LOL!

its surprisingly common actually. if the red ring of death wasn't over 50%, the yellow light of death would be this generations major hardware failure. but obviously the yellow light can't touch the red ring.

hey...now you have a reason to get a slim? eh?

    Well...

I got in touch with Sony. Basically, because I'm out of warranty I was screwed...LOL!

Up to 10 business days for me to receive my shipping box. Because it is a known issue (the yellow light of death) there is a fixed repair cost ($179.00 Canadian). There is also UP TO a 21 business day turnaround time on the repair. After I get it back, I only get a 60 day limited warranty on the "repaired" PS3.

    I had a choice.

$179.00 with up to a 31 business day wait (up to 6 weeks) and a limited warranty.

    or

$320.00 (after tax) and a full warranty on the Slim.

    I now own a Slim...LOL!

I've had bad luck. I had the Blu-Ray drive failure and then I got the yellow light of death. Both of the major PS3 issues and I had them both on the same console. Lemon!

It's pretty cool. I like the new finish of it. The "fat" PS3 had that ultra shiny finish that was a freaking magnet for dust and fingerprints. The slim has a duller finish that won't look filthy 10 seconds after you dust it.

The only gripe I have is that my whole home theater setup has to be altered now because the "slim" has to lay flat where my PS3 was always vertical and I had a PERFECT spot for it.

Yes it does. I chalk it up to technology though, they all have flaws. While XBOX seems to have more issues the PS3 is far from flawless.

The MAJOR sucking part is not the cash part (don't get me wrong, spending $300.00 was not something I WANTED to do or I could really afford to do right this second) but the fact that there is a game stuck in my old console (going to work on getting that out) and I lost my saved games. I JUST finished a 162 game season of MLB:The Show and I was in the middle of game 1 of the divisional series when the PS3 packed it in. That REALLY sucks....LOL!

Edit: Just ejected the game. IT appears that if you have a 40GB PS3 and you get the YLOD you can get the game out of the system by holding the eject button down while you power up the console. As the game ejected thought the system tried to start. It sounded like I had 10 computer fans all running at the same time, SO LOUD and after the game popped out it did the "beepbeepbeep" and crashed again.

I got the yellow light on my old 60GB. I had a warranty with Best Buy though so I swapped it for a 160GB PS3. I wish they would have had the slim ones out then though, this was about four months ago. I had MLB the show games saved, an Oblivion game, a completed Fallout3 game, tons of Rock Band stuff, it sucked.

I'm happy you could do the swap, I WISH I had the extended warranty. Live and learn.

My buddy is bringing his 40GB over to my house so I can swap out my hard drive with his and recover all my game saves.

I wish I had seen this thread sooner UT because I may have been able to help you out. See there are third party repairs for the YLOD that I found over at the PlayStation Forums where a guy on Ebay will fix your YLOD for $75 and he has a great approval rating (you even get a 90 day warranty). Sorry that Sony screwed you on this one.

    Here is his link:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/PLAYSTATION-3-REPAIR-YLOD-YELLOW-LIGHT-DEFECT-reflow_W0QQitemZ180349397247QQcmdZViewItemQQptZVideo_Games?hash=item29fda968ff&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1205|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50

Maybe this will be useful I don't know. However like others have said the YLOD is quite common especially on older consoles, hopefully I can avoid it but who knows. Over at the PS forums people have actually started a petition trying to get legal support to bring a case against Sony to get them to recognize this as a problem and give it the RROD treatment that MS has (an extended warranty).

I might get in touch with this guy and send him my brick. Nothing wrong with having an extra PS3 laying around the house, especially when I get a 2nd TV...LOL!

I don't feel I got "screwed" by Sony to be honest, This issue is not as widespread as the RROD (although it is a major issue). Technology fails, that is basically part of life. The only part that really pisses me off is that I got both of the major PS3 issues on the same damn console! If the clerk at the store had grabbed the one on the left or the right instead of mine off the shelf I probably would be in great shape.

I like your attitude and wish I had it, because when my Blu-Ray laser crapped out and I only had the system for 18 months then Sony refused to help I wasn't pleased and felt screwed.

Of course you are right...that is what electronics do.

the point though is yes the RROD is more common, but it is also covered...that's gotta be worth something.
