Want to remind everybody in here to tune in next Thursday, September 10th to 560 WQAM for the debut of my new show. The Dolphins and this board will be well represented as well as the rest of the NFL and a variety of other topics. Show also streams live at www.sidrosenberg.com and/or www.wqam.com. Earlier today I read a story in the New York Post that talked about the Dolphins being 1 of 8 teams to lose value this year. Column claims that the Dolphins value has gone down nearly 100 million dollars since my friend Steve Ross spent 1.1 billion on the team. Jaguars, Colts, Lions, Falcons and Raiders are some of the others. Redskins are doing great. The Cowboys are making money and the Giants and Jets rank 4th and 5th respectively. Point being the economy has even attacked the NFL. Blackouts became an issue this week too. I know most of us here are only concerned about beating Atlanta next week but the column does not paint a pretty picture.
There are murmors here in the Dallas area about Jerry Jones trying to fill his new behemoth as well. Fortunately or not, its not just the Dolphins, sure do hate hearing we are bringing up the backend.
If you look at the major cities across the country: LA, New York, Atlanta, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Boston, D.C etc., the economy has hit Miami the hardest. We are (according to an article I read recently) one of the poorest major cities in America per capita, save for maybe Detroit. We all know the Dolphins have had attendance struggles, but merchandising is also another way owners and teams make money. It's no surprise given the average family income in South Florida (specificially the Metro-Dade area) that the Phins are losing money. Hopefully things turn around.
1. what time is El Sid's show? 2. I'm not particularly worried about Ross, he is the master promoter in a Bill Veeck sort of way, and the revenues no doubt are speaking of in Stadium Revenues and not the Television Contract revenues which are enormous. fox alone paid 4.1 billion for 3 or 4 yrs, split 32 ways, add in NBC, ESPN, CBS all signing contracts in the billion(s) of dollars range and don't go crying for the poor NFL owenership just yet...they are a collection of the 32 sharpest businessmen in America they know how to turn a buck.
Miami is a difficult city for pro sports....you have so many transplants ... but a few back to back winning seasons will cure all. Ross is on the right track in trying to improve the overall game experience....damn I wish there was some way to build the seats closer to the field though. Why in the world did they design a stadium with seats so far away from the field...I dont get it?
I think with Ross' recent 'owner acquisitions' we are going to see a steady rise in attendance, maybe not immediately, but over the span of the next few years. I know a lot of people (fans included) are scoffing at J-Lo and the Williams sisters etc coming on board as 'owners' and a lot of people are fearing that the stadium is going to become a circus, but I think those fears are unwarranted at this time.
That's funny.....Forbes magazine, who I think is a little more credible and knowledgable about financial matters, has reported that during the four years that Bill Parcells has been with the team, the team's value has increased from $650 million to $1.5 billion. Maybe the team's value has gone down 100 million in the past year?, but with the economy the way it is, probably every team in the NFL has had their value go down a little. The team is still worth more than double what is was before Parcells arrived here. http://www.forbes.com/forbes/2009/0921/sports-nfl-bill-parcells-football-300-million-man_2.html
The figures are from Forbes Roman. http://www.forbes.com/2009/09/02/nf...-sportsmoney-football-values-09-nfl_land.html http://www.forbes.com/lists/2009/30/football-values-09_Miami-Dolphins_303017.html Now, the headline of this thread is not accurate. Dolphins are not losing money. Just like the stock price of a company doesn't reflect changes in revenue and product, neither does the Forbes "value." Operating income is fine. Also funny they put Huizenga's face where it says Ross.
wow, Redskins operating income is $90 million... I'm stunned that they have the highest considering their outflows in player salaries.
This may be a good thing, with the cost of suporting the NFL skyrocking, it costs too damn much. It has to come back down sooner or later. The players make waaaaayyyyy toooooo much damn money. Hopefully the owners will lock out the damn players and this can be a sport again. Sooner or later this is going to happen. Good for those 12 teams that are facing blackouts.
Thanks Did you notice the mistaken identity on this page? http://www.forbes.com/lists/2009/30/football-values-09_Miami-Dolphins_303017.html
Joe Robbie built the stadium to be a multi-purpose arena. He had interests in soccer and of course held the dream that Miami would some day have a baseball team. He built it out of his own pocket and was trying to allow for as many revenue generating opportunities as he could.
I "know" why Joe Robbie built it, but we have never been the same team since he built it and we left the Orange Bowl. 250 million in Wayne H renovations and it is not going anywhere anytime soon and I'd bet a large percentage in the drop in the value of the franchise is the price of Landshark Stadium, those 250 million in renovations knocks the purchase price down to the 900 million dollar range.
I can understand where he was coming from actually...but...it just really ends up taking away from the football experience I think. I wonder if they could actually just retrofit the stadium in some way...if it would even be first possible from an engineering stand point, and second, a financial standpoint. I can see Ross doing some things...like a material style sun screen... This would really help just keep the beating sun off of the fans...add a little artistic flair...looks even a little tropical...
That's a nice pic of the Home Depot Center over here in my neck of the woods, Carson California. I need to get down there sometime to see a Futbol match. That screen would be nice at JRS... once they get the Marlins out, they need to somehow get the sidelines closer to the action.
Eh...I wouldnt be so sure...they can build sections they can roll in and out...but it seems as if Joe Robbie is going to be a football only field..so I see them making whatever additions they need to make it more....of a home field advantage... Also...remember Mike Dee, the new Dolphins CEO was part of the Red Sox..and that ownership team decided to retro fit and add on to Fenway...and have done a great job with this....I see the Phins taking a similar route... If I were Ross....Id hire Disney to create a themed atmosphere...they are the absolute best at doing that...
The Dolphins franchise is a business as we know.It depends on what info you want to believe at the time.Just like the stock market and 401's,it will fluctuate. No need to get our panties in an uproar about what is or could be. It's all about the product, and our product is what plays on the field. That is my only concern at this time. The rest will take care of itself. Let's hear it now, GO DOLPHINS !!!!!!!!!
