With hunting season fastly approaching I decided that I wanted a ghillie suit, rather than buy one, I made up my mind that I was going to make one. Now I know the materials that I'll need and I understand the art of camouflage, my problem is the type of netting I should be using. I found a few videos online that were a great source of information, but the local army surplus store didn't have the netting used in the video, infact they didn't have much of anything that I could use. So for the hunters and military folk here on the site, what type of netting would you recommend? Any other hints would be greatly appreciated. :wink2:

    1. I've seen fishing netting used, even the thin nylon stuff.

    2. Be sure to use a flame ******ant spray on the material when you are done.

A ghillie is basically a giant wick..

Burlap + flame = really bad situation for the wearer.

like, my bro made one. bough a kit off ebay.

    1. Go to a army surplus and get an jacket.
    2. Sew a mesh onto it (ill get details later)
    3. The ghillie kit came with a bunch of yarn. He painstakingly put together lengths (differeing colors) and tied them into the mesh.
    4. You are going to need burlap, it really does complete the look.
    5. Natural camo is a must, but before that, you have to rough up your suit. Armed forces sniper actually drag it in mud etc.
    6. Make a hat!! It looks bomb.

Ill send pics whenever I can. I had strangers try to find my brother from 20 feet away, and couldn't. Smart azz anti hunters, so it was pleasing.

IT TAKES PATIENCE THOUGH. He literally spent hours on it.

The netting my bro used was a nylon netting that came with a kit. The finer the mesh, the better, easier to fill out.

Also, just talked to my bro, he used shoe glue to attach it - he didn't sew it. Anyways, I'll still send pics.

Thanks for the tips guys, much appreciated.

I don't think the shoe goo and jacket are something that I'll need, I think I'm going more for a full bodied bush rag than a traditional sniper's ghillie.

In the first pic, you can see the yarn that the kit comes with.

Different colors. He cut each color to a certain lenght (depending on sleeve, breast, etc), and grouped a few colors together - then applied them to the mesh.

He started with base greens and filled the net. Then he added accents, the lighter colors.

His mesh was pretty big, I'd say 1/2" to 3/4" diaganols, but he said if he did it again, he'd use a smaller mesh, easier to fill.

based on the pics...i think you could totally get away with buying a simple Chewbacca costume, and spray painting a little bit of green on it.

and im not into hunting at all, but that thing seems like itd make it rather uncomfortable and less fun waiting around for your kill.

Actually they aren't that uncomfortable or restrictive, it's just like wearing a poncho or light rain slicker. I tried one on a couple of days ago and it really isn't very noticeable after a few minutes. To look at it you would think that it's heavy and it would make you sweat like a pig in heat, but it's just the opposite. :wink2:

    How so?

Let your friends do all of the talking, you can rub it in their faces at the end of the day when you have more game than they do. :wink2:

The burlap, Rit dye (dark green, yellow, brown), some synthetic mosquito mesh that I'll have to spray paint in order to break it up a bit. I don't want a regular ghillie that is shoe gooed to a flightsuit or jacket, I'm looking to make a full body bush rag and I'm not sure which netting will hold up best for that application.

    basic button up camo shirt.
    Baseball netting.
    burlap.
    yarn.
dye. rit from walmart will work fine.
jute if you can find it.
    and lots of patience.

Now that is 1 7/8" square mesh, isn't that a bit large? I ask because one of the online videos that I saw said that you should look for 3/4" netting, something that I have had an extremely hard time finding, noone seems to sell it.

    Here is the vid btw

You can tighten up the size by running a small piece of nylon thread side to side or up and down, or overlap the netting, so that you have smaller squares.

Cabelas is the best, too bad we don't have one in my area, all of my shopping through them is online. We have a Gander Mountain, but it's kind of limited in their clothing.

Dude, this project is time consuming enough. Gimme a break.

I saw those, it's actually cheaper to just get all of the supplies individually and there is more room to customize. Thanks though.

I stopped by the Cabela's near Reno and my goodness that place was amazing. I could have spend my whole paycheck in there.

wife would have beaten me like a rented mule, but I certainly could have found the stuff to spend it on.

Yeah, they have a nice one in Pennsylvania that has everything including a shooting range. Heck, even Bass Pro Shop has a nice layout with large fish tanks and a huge selection. The Gander Mountain that we have here looks like Walmart with a slightly bigger inventory. :glare:
