Did anybody else feel like they were watching a WWF staged presentation? I was waiting for Vince McMahon to jump out any minute
I'm sorry I used the wrong choice of words. The public loved Kanye's album as much you may not like to admit it. When the album sells, it has high reviews, and it is considered a masterpiece universally... it's usually not some talentless hack that does it. And if it is a talentless hack, how does he seem to do it over.. and over again? People are stereotype rappers as the guys who illegally download beats and speak over them as if it were every single one of them. I've seen those guys, I work at a place with a recording booth... They come in all the time. But those guys never make it. And if they do, they don't make it for long. Kanye's been around for a good reason... and it's not because he doesn't know anything.
Well if we really want to go about the argument this way, how many rock musicians could even come close to some of the guitar skills of jazz musicians? Or music theory involved in thing slike jazz? You are disqualifying alot of musicians with that statement. My point bringing that in was I would very much consider the scat singers musicians as my friends which was the context of the discussion. What they did was improvisation of vocal chords, matching keys with their vocal chords, timing, rythmn, all very much what a musician would do, just a very different instrument. And it extends beyond that, guys like coltrane were known to improvise vocals, parker, etc. Now ask me if i like kanye, no, I think he hacks songs way to much to make his beats, now ask me if I think making beats takes a musicians ear, mindset, etc, then the answer is a resounding yes.
Am I entitled to the actual definition of the word? Never said it was. But you're description of it being "talking in rhyme" isn't really accurate. Hell, Johnny Cash talked in rhyme at times. It just seems you base a lot of your definition on how much training someone has.
Before I watched the video, it crossed my mind especially since MTV has done stuff like that in the past to get buzz, but if you see Taylor Swift's reaction either she's one of the greatest actresses of all time or she just wasn't 'in' on the stunt. Either way I seriously can't believe how much talk this is getting, I even heard it talked about on a local sports radio station. I mean really? Is it that big of a deal? It was at a crappy meaningless 'award' show, do you think Kanye West would have the balls to do that at the Grammy's?
Listen guys...carry on with the discussion. None of us are going to change the other's minds. Let's fall back on that ol' "agree to disagree" thang.
Initially, it was reported the Kanye apologized on his blog page. Fox is now reporting that Kanye deleted the apology then this just moments ago:
I think its clear. Kandye needs a serious timeout followed by a hug. Seriously, this entire thing appears as a script directly out of a Soap Opera. Do grown ups (Aside from politicians of course) actually act like this?
Well, there goes the old speaks his mind and never backs down theory right down the drain. The only problem I have with his issued apology is he made a bad comparison using the Ben Stiller character. What West did was petty and mean spirited. If he doesn't comprehend that then I would say he falls within the mild MR range of intellectual functioning.
If this was a publicity stunt, the execs at MTV would be nodding in approval over big threads like this.
I could not agree with Obama more on this one.. http://www.politico.com/click/stories/0909/did_obama_call_kanye_a_jackass.html?cxntlid=thbz_hm
I personally am glad someone had the guts to say what we all knew, i mean, All the Single ladies video was amazing, i mean If you liked it then you know what, you should of put a freakin ring on it... I mean yeah taylor swift has an voice of an angle, but you know what, i liked Beyonce, and i am putting a ring on it! She changed my life! Just this morning i ate an amazing PP&J sandwich that i went to the store, bought a ring, and put it on it! Beyonce was ROBBED!
I have several friends that ARE musicians and they would say the same thing. There are many in the music biz but only a portion are actually musicians. I went to school for art. My daughter makes lots of drawings and they are talented bits of art. We even hang them around the house. Would I call her an artist? No. She is just a talented 7 year old that, given time could very well become an artist with training and practice.
