the negativity after a loss

    :omg:

I understand we've all got opinions. I hate losing as much as the rest of you do I'm sure. Sick said it somewhere, if we miss the playoffs because of one game the ATL game may as well be it.

There have been so many threads ever since the loss Sunday that are frothing with negativity. I can understand it and in many ways I sympathize. However, put it in perspective.

We are not the only team to have lost a game.

    Teams with losses:

    Cardinals
    Bills
    Panthers
    Bears
    Bengals
    Browns
    Lions
    Texans
    Jaguars
    Chiefs
    Raiders
    Rams
    Bucs
    Titans
    Redskins

Bills/Raiders are in Bold because I feel like they played very well despite the losses and could have very well won those games. Panthers and Texans are in italics because they got completely smoked. Cardinals are underlined because the score was close; Bengals because they're unlucky and the score was close.

At any rate I beg you guys to please back off the panic button... It's getting worn out with all the pressing. True if we miss the playoffs because of one game I'll be equally pissed with the rest of you, but we're not even close to that yet. There is a LOT of football left to be played.

We need to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and get ready for this Colts team on monday and the Chargers after that.

I know I'm ready to forget about the Falcons.

i think it will be worse as I think we lose monday. Having said that, we knew we had a weak schedule last year. We knew we were playing with the big boys this year. Time to man up and take the hits. I understand people want to discuss what might be wrong, but I also think a little rational thought is needed before some things are said. For instance:
Jake long was a pro bowler last year, he got ran over by a great player. OOOOOOOOOO shocking.
Penny played great last year. It is outside the realm of reason to think that all of a sudden the league figured out he couldn't throw long and are now stacking the box to the point he is rendered moot.
Our secondary needs work which is why we have two rookies in it.
Our offensive line would be the main concern I think.
The rest its a little early.

  9. anlgp

    anlgp ↑ ↑ ↓ ↓ ← → ← → B A

rational thought and discussion is one thing lucky but over the past several days i've heard some very uncharacteristic comments out of this board.

i'm more worried about the colts than i am about SD mainly because of the injuries that SD has (linemen). I think if we can shut down SD run game we have a chance.

IND if we shut down the run all we've gotta worry about is Peyton Manning. Wait, what?

exactly. most sane people would of been OK if we played well and lost to ATL, its the fact that we got our *** kicked in every aspect of the game(outside of our run defense) and especially against a poor ATL defense.

Well, it remains to be seen if that was a poor Atlanta defense, lets see how they keep playing.

Maybe we just ran into a very strong playoff contending team with a good defense.

Time will tell, but not after one week.

i was just kidding with that part. the part i was serious about is how we lost. thats the reason for the posts. as nappy said if we had played well and lost or played respecatble and lost i guarantee you wouldnt have seen half of the posts you've seen this week. we embarrassed ourselves sunday and that caused alot of us to wonder if there is something fundamentally wrong with the team or is it just a one game abberration. right now i dont know how the oline is going to play. i thought i did before sunday but not anymore

I didn't think they'd be all that great. The reason being is even though they've played together all pre-season long they're still a new "unit".

They're not an established whole like some of the Olines are.

Grant it, that's not really an excuse or justification just a fact.

I agree. I will even try to throw a little positive point out there regarding the game. We lost to an NFC team.:D That can be very important if the records in the divisions our close at the end of the year. We've all seen that happen. Now we can go regroup, learn from the mistakes and go knock the snot out the Colts.:D

Main point: If we were going to have a bad game, this wasn't the worst one to have. I know they all suck, but hey!!! there's a positive for ya'!;)

well you may be right. i know we have grove and thomas playing but i thought they would have their stuff down pat by now. sparano said communication on the stunts atlanta was using was horrible and had to be fixed so that seems to verify your outlook. hopefully they dont take too long to gel

Alot of what was complained about this week was also discussed throughout the preseason negatively even when we went 4-0. To me, The loss or a win to the Falcons wouldn't have impacted a whole lot of what I have been saying.

I think the people that got emotional about the loss were expecting us to have a bunch of adjustments and schemes that we either didn't have or didn't use.

I didn't know if we'd win or lose, but I had and still have some concerns over our Offensive scheme. That might be made better a bit by winning, but in the long run I don't think we beat any contenders until we fix what is broken.

As for me, I make it a point to never let something that I don't control effect my self esteem. Guys that get all bent out of shape over a loss by the Dolphins need to learn that lesson.

yeah i think i fell in the camp of not being too concerned with our preseason woes. my thinking was that we werent showing all our cards in preseason. then sunday came and i saw our cards were 8, 2 off suit

I had optimistic thoughts too, hoping what so many were saying was going to pan out. I have a deep respect for our staff and feel we are lucky to have them. On the same hand though nobody is perfect, and they are in the spotlight. I wasn't delighting at all in seeing the same problems plague us, and would have loved to have been wrong about my concerns.

I'm sure we'll fix it somehow, someway... I just hope it's sooner rather than later. The schedule is tough enough without playing with one hand tied behind our back.

Thanks for posting this. The doom, gloom, and conjectures are going to totally consume our bye week if we start anything less than 3-2, so lets save some for then ;) Just kidding.

Seriously though, it was one game, we know they can, and have played better than this. I'm confident it'll get better :)

I hate to sound like a broken record but, "Any Sunday". Atlanta could be a great team this year or a dog. Bottom line being that any team is capable any week. We have to go out and take it to them... NO WAY WE LOSE TO INDY IN OUR HOME OPENER ON NATIONAL TV!!

Last week I honestly felt that Atlanta would win and this week I have the same feeling about Miami (call it football intuition).

I know no one, especially the analysts on TV, will pick the Fins but I think being at home and feeling embarrassed by last week will make the difference in this game. No one doubts that Indy is a good team but clearly from their week 1 win they are struggling to adapt to all the changes just as Miami struggled last week. Still, however, coming into this game Indy looks to be the better team but looks can be deceiving. If this game was being played in Indy I would pick them but the home crowd on a Monday night should be electric and an angry team desperate not to go 0-2 will play a huge role. Remember if Miami wins this game they will have a better record through 2 games this year than they did last doing so with a much harder record. Also remember last year this team was 2-4 at one point so I agree with anlgp let's not give up yet.

I also agree with everyone else that this team has problems and I have no problem with criticizing in fact I endorse it but still in week 1 teams have a lot of kinks to work out. Remember when NE got blown out by Buffalo a few years back and then went on to win the Super Bowl? If you remember that year everyone was down on New England for the Lawyer Milloy trade and everyone was also expecting them to have a failure season. Week 1 does not a season make and as NE proved a team can look horrible and still bounce back. I just wish Indy wasn't the team Miami had to bounce back against I much rather it be the Lions. :D

I agree now things are looking bad but after Monday I think we will all be a happier bunch.

The loss to ATL had little to do with any negative opinions I might have. It certainly didn't form any new opinions. I don't look at it as negativity, just discussing concerns.

If we can't discuss those things on an open forum, what should we do? Discuss them with Armando on his blog?

Personally I'd rather talk to you guys...lol

Personally I don't have a problem with anybody hitting the panic button after that loss. Even though our schedule is tougher we supposedly made a lot of improvements in the offseason.

    1. Our o-line was supposed to be vastly improved with Grove, Thomas, and the return of Smiley.

    2. Pennington was supposed to get off to a faster start because he had a full offseason and training camp as opposed to just being acquired from the Jets.

    3. Ronnie was supposed to be even better now that he's almost two years removed from his knee injury.

    4. Ginn was supposed to take it to a new level now that he's entering his third year.

    5. Our wideout corps was supposed to be improved with the additions of Turner and Hartline.

    6. Our pass rush was supposed to be scary with JT and Porter on the same field together and a coaching staff that knows what its doing.

    7. The Wildcat was supposed to be vastly improved with the addition of Pat White.

    8. Our secondary was supposed to be vastly improved with the additions of Davis, Smith, and Wilson.

However Atlanta's front seven gave our o-line fits, Pennington struggled, Ronnie didn't score or make any big plays in or out of the Wildcat, Ginn only had two catches for 26 yards no touchdowns and wasn't a factor in the return game, Turner was inactive, JT had a sack but Porter didn't apply much pressure and Atlanta was the team with a scary pass rush not the Dolphins, Pat White didn't do anything, and Matt Ryan had a good day against our secondary and it could have been a lot worse if he didn't miss on a couple throws in the 1st quarter.

Are we just supposed to forget everything we talked about in the preseason?

Sorry, I LOVE this thread, but apologetically I must insert something I've put in 2 other threads in the last hour:

Tony Sparano said it best in his Monday presser "16 teams lost this weekend, and I don't see any of the other 15 canceling their season."

I look at it this way, we got beat by 2 things: 1. a good team, and 2. ourselves (turnovers, lack of execution, etc.) If it was going to happen at any point in the season, Atlanta was the best place for it to happen, now Sparano & staff are correcting those things we can correct and this team will be WAY better prepared for the Colts because of the loss.

I actually think if the OL can get it together, we can beat Indy.

    2. If you think penny won't have anymore ****ty games you are fooling yourself.
    3. A running back having a tough time when the o line has a tough time makes sense to me.
    4. Kind of hard to judge with penny having a ****ty game.
    5. See number 4.
    6. Our d line was pretty damn good and shut down a good run game. Not sure what problem you have there. Even our pass rush wasn't too bad.
    7. Pat whites a rookie, if you thought there wouldn't be some difficulties with a rookie running it well I don't know what to tell you.
    8. Again vastly improved with the addition of two rookies.

Basically as I said earlier I think those hitting the panic button are doing so because they basically got their hopes up for a team that is still fairly young and now facing a tougher schedule.
You don't have to forget what you talked about, but there is a difference between asking people to be rationale and quell their expectations, versus asking people to forget what was talked about.

My biggest problem with this loss was the fact that we turned the ball over so many times in the very next game after our playoff loss where we turned the ball over so many times.
Sparano had a whole offseason to concentrate on preventing turnovers and the VERY first game, we turn the ball over 5 times.
