I’m wearing my Ray Lewis Hurricanes’ jersey for tonight’s game…

Hey, how about this for an observation From the Other Corner (Seattle, natch!): No matter the stadium; no matter the city; no matter if it’s a pro or a college game—the Ref’s mic NEVER works right off the bat.

Is it AV Geek revenge? Because it seems rather a no-brainer to test the audio equipment before the game!

So what’s up with that, nerdos?

Here’s something that is glaringly obvious to me about this season’s Hurricanes: for the first time since Butch Davis was Head Coach, Miami’s Receivers are being COACHED! TAUGHT, even!

Their discipline running routes, finishing plays, catching with their hands, coming back to Harris when there’s pressure…the difference between this unit and the WR corps the last few years is night and day.

And not only the wideouts, either—the whole team seems more disciplined, more focused…better coached so far this season.

Kudos to Randy Shannon and his staff for reversing the coaching/recruiting/teaching tailspin from the Coker years. Well done—even if it is still early yet.

On the other hand…let’s talk about the elephant in the room: how could the coaches let the kicking game get out so of hand? And I’m including what I saw in last week’s game in this question.

What—was Matt Bosher kicking them out of the end zone all Spring and Summer in practice, only to suddenly lose all ability during games—to the point that he can barely get to the 20 on kickoffs sometimes?

He’s been so bad that his replacement against Georgia Tech, Uribe, can’t even kick straight (two consecutive kickoffs out of bounds for penalties)—much less into the end zone—and he still looks better than Bosher.

AND THEN BOSHER MISSES TWO FIELD GOALS…the second with about 3 minutes left in the 4th to make it a 3-possession game!

Lou Groza Award, my ***. Here ya go, Matt:

You’re the inaugural winner of Nabo’s Fairy Princess Award. Enjoy.

Alright, seriously now—who really thought that the ‘Canes could hold Georgia Tech, a team averaging 330+ rushing yards until this game, to MINUS 100 yards?

Outstanding job by the guys like Eric Moncur and Colin McCarthy, who were expected to step up in this game; but special kudos to youngsters like Olivier Vernon and Andrew Smith, who played with a discipline and headiness beyond their Freshman and Sophomore standing. Nice job, kids.

How about this Miami Offensive backfield? James and Cooper to soften them up; then Lee Chambers, Damien Berry, Patrick Hill (5’9”-260! How’s that for a Fullback?)!

Javarris James is going to make an NFL team very happy—and the other 31 very unhappy if for passing on him if he goes past the end of the 1st round. At 6’0” and 212 pounds, he gives up nothing in terms of his combination of size, speed and ability to make defenders miss, to anyone else in the nation.

And Graig Cooper is an elite talent. How many players has Milford Prep put in the NFL?

Wasn’t there talk of moving Cooper to WR early in his career, when Miami was so short at the position…or am I thinking of someone else? If it was, what a travesty that would have been.

So…how are we doing at Tight End U?

Dedrick Epps has one hell of a pair of hands. He whiffed on a block and dropped a pass in his hands early in the game—and then proceeded to turn in a flawless performance the rest of the game.

Jimmy Graham is poised to become a going concern for opposing Defenses. His size—6’8” and 260 pounds—and athleticism for the Tight End position (he was a forward for the basketball team) will make him a very dangerous weapon for The U this season.

Too bad he came to football so late; he’s a senior. Epps too. Also leaving after this season are Richard Gordon and Tervaris Johnson (who lines up mostly at Fullback), who are behind Epps and Graham on the depth chart.

Daniel Adderly (So, 6’6”-225), Billy Sanders (Fr, 6’4”-248) and Stephen Plein (Fr, 6’6”-260!) are poised to compete to be the starter next season when those four leave.

    Now…random thoughts;

    • Leonard Hankerson is NFL-ready…or close to it. And he’s only a Sophomore!

    • Has any player disappointed more after his freshman year than Sam Shields? I don’t know how bad he could possibly have been if allowed to stay at Wide Receiver, but he is dreadful in coverage.

    • Hella towheads on that Tech cheerleading squad; were they going for uniformity or racial purity?

    • I kid, I kid.

    • Brandon Harris is a PLAYER. I think he could play Corner full-time; he has the man-coverage skills.

    • And can anyone say enough about Colin McCarthy? He's the kind of leader with the work ethic that every team wants on their Defense. 6'3"-240; probably best suited to MLB in a 4-3...but I wonder if he can play in the 3-4. Hmmm...

    • Watching a Miami team play on that goddamn dirt infield once in a week is bad enough, but twice in four days is going to really piss me off. The Marlins are still a couple of seasons from moving the **** out, FINALLY—but why in all these years did no one think of going to Field Turf to solve the problem? Or if someone did, why wasn’t it implemented? If you add up the injuries and the missed field goals from the accursed thing, I’ll bet the number is higher than any of us imagine.

    • On the other hand—for the first time EVER, as far as I can recall—the infield adversely affected the opposing team for a change, as GT missed a field goal from the dirt. YAY! Home-field advantage!

    • Jesus H. Minetti…did you see the salsa dancer in the pink jumpsuit they featured coming back from commercial in the 4th quarter?! Someone get her name and head to the Ladies Lounge…NOW!

This will be the last game the Phins and Canes will have to play in the dirt.

Agree with a lot of your points bro.. One thing I wanna add: I think Cooper has the ability to be as good if not better then Gore in the NFL. 4 years from now we'll look back and see why we came back. This team is full of kids that will play in the NFL and be big time players.

Nice, the only things I can add:

-You can tell the Canes are a young team, some of them look positively gaunt

-The Oline stoned GT, Harris could have mircrowaved a hot pocket then hit Hankerson downfield, Derrick Morgan was a non factor.

-Good to see a large crowd at Landshark there was some talk of the game having troubles selling tickets.

-twice on the national stage, two great performances against ranked teams

-Canes take Oklahoma down, they are a top 10 team, a legit top ten team.

Got to give credit to Randy Shannon, no mistakes, no boneheaded penalties.

Padre I think if we take down VT, assuming VT wins this saturday, we are a legit top ten team.

Also like to add everyone should check out the quotes from after the game about Whipple and Harris. Everyone on the team believes in him.

This team has a QB they believe in, and talent around him he can work with.

That PI penalty in the 2nd quarter was definitely a boneheaded penalty. Giving them another chance in the redzone when the WR was a good 3 yards short of the 1st down anyway. Missed a FG in the end, so I guess you could say no harm no foul.

That was a bad call by the ref in my opinion. The receiver was diving. Even if we assume he catches it, it's fourth down and they can't get a first on that pass. It was a horrible call by the ref when you consider the situation in the game.

Great quote by a GT fan

Definitely have to disagree, the defender was coming over his back before the ball got there. I'm not even sure what you mean by "It was a horrible call by the ref when you consider the situation in the game", so the ref is supposed to ignore PI since the play wouldn't have been a 1st down?

On fourth down if a ball is well short, no the penalty should not be called. It's idiotic to call it in fact.

You're taking a play that would have no impact on the game and turning it into one that does. If it's near or beyond the first down marker of course, but the play was a good 4 to 7 yards short.

WEll, I can't bust on a player who is flagged while doing their job, not when I saw Will Allen do the same thing in Atlanta on a 3rd and 5.

By boneheaded I was thinking of the kicker getting a late hit penalty against FSU or a couple of false starts on a series, a guy trying to make a play and things happen I can't call a bonehead.

Now if he took his helmet off on the field and argued with the ref that it wasn't a PI receiving another penalty for doing so...then I'd agree./

The PI penalty was questionable; but if Telemaque doesn't put his hand on the Receiver's helmet on the way down, it doesn't get called.

A play by a young defender who will probably not make that mistake again.

The real bad penalty was roughing the passer to nullify that sweet interception by Harris...that hurt.

I totally meant to call out Whipple for turning this team Offense around, and forgot.

What a job he's done so far...I hope the University extends his contract, or clones him or something.

No, the defender was the one who turned it into a play that had an impact on the game. A penalty is a penalty. I can see now we'll have to agree to disagree on that one. Never heard someone say something like that.

I'd be saying the same thing if it happened to my team. If a penalty has no impact on a game, and wasn't something that puts a player in danger (late hit, illegal hit) you don't call it. For example what if it was 4th and 99? They throw a ten yard pass and there is interference. I would really hope they wouldnt call it.

    Agree to disagree is fine.

The kid was trying to make a play. I wouldn't call that boneheaded. If you wanna talk about boneheaded - #90 Steven Wesley, roughing the passer on 3rd and a mile.

Sorry I am in on this late, but WHAT?

    A penalty is a penalty(.)

If its 4th and 99 and your defender commits PI, the referee had sure as hell better call it, its his job.

It falls directly on the defender to not commit a penalty in that situation that screws his own team.

In no way, shape or form should a referee not call a penalty that he sees. That in fact would indeed change the outcome.

EDIT: BTW. I didn't see this game am I am NOT a fan of either team. My perspective is entirely nuetral.

It's commonly called "letting the players play"

There would be holding on every single play if they called everything. You only call penalties that have a direct impact on the game, and/or put players in danger. Such as illegal blocks, late hits, so forth. If the penalty was on third down call it. But the fact that it wasn't a blantant penalty AND it had no direct impact on the game made it a bad call.

It's also reffered to as a "tic-tac call"

No you don't. Players get called for holding all the time when they are behind the play or their man has no impact on the play. Hell, on a 4th and 1 I saw the GT LT false started. Since it was a QB sneak up the middle should that penalty not have been called because the LT's execution would actually have no baring on the play?

That was not a ticky tack call, it was pass interference. It was a bad decision by the defender, not the referee.

A false start happens before the play. When it is called you can't know what is going to happen on the play.

No comparison. As someone who played the sport growing up, I can say there is a sort of understanding of what you are supposed to get away with and what you are not. It isn't even like the corner mugged him, he barely touched him until they were both on the way down.

Ooh I dont know Alex. You have to call them as you see them. That penalty by Telemaque extended that drive. On the next play or series of plays anything coulda happened. A key player on our defense coulda have sustained a season ending injury or the same thing could have happened to a GTech player.

As I watched Jacory Harris' jersey remain spotless for the second consecutive week, I wondered, "I'd love to see what would happen if Chad Pennington got that kind of protection".... Seriously, while we probably haven't faced the absolute best of the best front sevens yet, those guys are doing a damn fine job up front. And they're wearing people out. The next two games will tell us exactly how good that unit is.

The kicking game....WTF. We very easily could have lost last week because of the stupid pooch kicks (coaching). Then we open the game kicking one out of bounds (player). Then we miss two easy field goals (player).

I don't know which is more maddening, this or the Dolphins kick blocking unts.

As for the salsa dancer.....inspirational. That chick is blessed. :sweatdrop:

Those are things that happen in the course of a game though independant of calls. Of course it's possible, and would suck.

Like I said it goes both ways for me. I don't care if it's my team or the other, I would feel very lucky for that call if it were my team. I'm not saying you cant call it, but usually I dont think you would considering the situation.

We can all agree to disagree and remain friends

I never said I was the only one, or that you didn't. I was just stating that my understanding of the game came from playing it, not from just watching. Kind of like if you said "As the author of ten books, I can tell you this one is a good one"

If the guy isnt interfered with maybe he makes the catch and breaks a tackle. The idea of refs using their discretion to decide when a penalty should be called is a slippery slope that they shouldnt have to power to go down, imo.

Wouldnt you just be inviting defenders to interfere with every pass that's thrown short of the 1st down marker?
