He goes on to say against good defenses, it just didn't work.

Also says that it isn't legitmate football, and at the tail end of the segment with Mayock, says "lets talk about legitimate football now".

    http://www.nfl.com/videos/atlanta-falcons/09000d5d812a7507/WK-1-Playbook-Defending-the-wildcat

Just have a listen. Mayock talks about Pat White etc, saying that White will open the Wildcat once he hits his throws and Billick responds by saying "let him hit the throw first, then I'll worry". Just being an ignorant jack azz.

I can't wait until our Wildcat clicks.

Just another reason to hate Baltimore.

Its true Pat White hasn't completed a pass out of the Wildcat what is there to fear? Teams will stack 8-9 in the box everytime.

LOL. I know, but all the years I hated BAL, he was part of it.

He kept stressing a "good" defense can stop the Wildcat, pretty much saying BAL's defense, rubbing it in and such.

    Just a punk.

I don't need a reminder. It is the way he goes about saying it. I think he is pompous. What insight did he possibly bring to that feature? Nothing.

He is pompous but he does bring insight to the feature. He brings you the insight of a former player and how that former player will not change from the model that he learned under.

Probably my favorite line Billick has ever said on an NFL screen is "if I win a Super Bowl (running the ball) like this, I may never throw a pass again." That was the Ravens superbowl season. A season that every observer of the game readily identifies as the Ravens defense superbowl. Billick was in his second year as head coach. He spent that preseason searching for a quarterback. He settled on Tony Banks as the quarterback of the future. Trent Dilfer takes over and becomes the caretaker of the football. The rest of the story is just not history - it's a lesson in the futility that is "the search for a quarterback."

Brian Billick spent 9 seasons searching for a quarterback from Tony Banks to Elvis Grbac to Jeff Blake to Kyle Boller to Steve McNair and finally back to Kyle Boller. The only success he ever found was when the Ravens defense ranked in the top ten defenses in the league. He is a proven failure at quarterback development. He is a proven failure at running a pro offense. Yet he swears by the pro offense in this video and the pro offense is exactly where his rise to fame originated under Dennis Green.

It's ironic that years after Dennis Green was thrown under the bus in Minnesota (after drafting Randy Moss) that he would be thrown under the bus in Arizona after drafting quite possibly the best receiver since Randy Moss in the form of Larry Fitzgerald. Isn't amazing to find that passing gurus usually have the most talented receivers in the league.....

So Brian Billick says that YOU can win a college national championship with the wildcat but he will win a superbowl with the pro offense. The fact is that he didn't win a championship with offense. His one superbowl championship derived from the best defense in modern history. It was a defense that being built when Mr. Pompousity arrived to the job. What makes his statements arguably stupid is that the Ravens championship was largely based in a structure founded when Bill Bellichek was in Cleveland. Bellichek left the talent in the Browns/Ravens front office. Bellichek left the model that Ozzy Newsome follows til this day.

What is Bellichek doing these days? He's visiting college campuses. He's watching installations of spread offenses. My guess would be that if he didn't stumble onto Tom Brady, he would have already been running some form of read option. But Bellichek no longer has the problem that Brian Billick had nine years running. Bellichek found a quarterback and developed that quarterback. He doesn't have to turn to read option. He doesn't have to "wildcat".

This monday night I found something interesting in the mentality of a running offense though. I have said it before and I will repeat it again. The single wing is a four down offense. What I mean by that is once you cross the fifty yard line, you go for it on fourth down. You do not run, run, pass, and then punt to pin your opponent on the goal line. To the contrary, you exhaust all four downs running or passing to gain 10 yards. The wildcat will fail until the head coach has the nuts to realize this one fact. IT IS A FOUR DOWN OFFENSE. So what was so surprising monday night? Bill Bellichek with for no good reason other than being a four down offense going not once but twice....

That is coaching with brass balls. That is coaching football with confidence. It's a welcome to football against the normal call. It's something Brian Billick never understood because he cannot think out of the box. He's an ex-jock with a whistle and he should remain unemployed for having a proven track record for limited coaching ability.

I should add that I am awaiting a continued downward spiral of our Miami Dolphins offense. It is an offense that cannot get us to the promised land. The talent at quarterback just isn't there. The present quarterback is a caretaker of the football. As the Ravens demonstrated in 2000, there is nothing wrong with that as long as you have one of the best defenses in football. I do not think we have the best defense in football and the rules are presently skewed to encourage scoring through the passing game.

The only way to keep offenses off the field longer is to either run the ball more, force turnovers in the passing game by playing zone, or increase the likelihood of more three and outs for the opponent. We are already playing alot of zone. We have not forced many turnovers. We have probably maxed the amount of three and outs that are achievable. We have to run. The opponent knows we have to run. We do not scare any team with our passing game.

When this head coach turned to the wildcat last year, he showed me something about his mentality. He displayed that he would attempt anything in order to win and I like that. I still do not expect to see a full blown "wildcat" offensive team this year. The first thing this team will do is bench the quarterback. It's the safest model to follow. But there is a side of me that would like to see him box in a corner with no other way out. Call me a dreamer. Call me a dreamer for wishing that one day I will see some team lining up to run lateral before running vertical because they cannot defeat the opponent consistently any other way. Call me a dreamer for wishing that analysts like Brian Billick will someday realize that his foot has been firmly placed in his mouth.

There is a reason that guy doesn't have a job anymore.
he lost to us when we were 0 and 14, without using the wildcat, what does THAT tell you?

I agree that he is insightful on Playbook, but for that certain segment, he had nothing insightful to say whatsoever.

Our offensive line stopped the wildcat. It wasn't anything specific they did that was amazing or new. They played it the same way everyone else did, they just got penetration.

And Ronnie Brown missed a throw.

great post. Eventhough I hate the Pats and Belichick, I do admire Bill's coaching ability. I mean 3 or 4 years ago, the Patriots were a defensive team then this past couple of seasons they just evolved into an offensive team. Pretty amazing.

you have a point about the wildcat being a 4 down offense. However, i doubt our team implements it. Sporano is all about fundamentals and not turning the ball over and making any mistakes. Well a fail 4th down conversion is like a turnover in football. :pointlol:

Brian Billick is a fool, an OC with little OC success who won a SB ONLY because of the Defense which he had nothing to do with. He got lucky, period. You couldn't pay me to listen to that guy nor would I ever have any respect for his offensive comments or opinions.

Baltimore ate the crap out of the Wildcat BOTH times last year. As Ray Lewis says, "there's only one ball, go find it."

Some of us could use you in the club about this subject...Were still battling that its not a gimmick with some.

An original wildcat play with ronnie taking the snap is our best running play by far...its powerful, it takes push from our oline, and ronnie goes into a different mode.

Such great points about sparano recognizing, absolutely correct...The question is, how long are they gonna go and try to, out execute the defense, on every play.

The wildcat is legitimate offense, your not a dreamer, seriously, i would like to see it become 20 percent of our offense.. i think ronnie and Pat could be dynamic together, and iam hoping that david lee has the depth of knowledge to builld it from scatch.

The key to me, is getting ronnie and pat on the field together, and letting them interchange at the position, and not just for a play or two, here and there, but a legitimate drive, starting at the 20...

Iam having some problems trying to figure out whether or not to implement the wildcat during a proset drive, Thats why i would like to see it on its own persay, i think this may help the rhythm issues, of both offenses wildcat, proset}, thats if you believe in that rhythm stuff... I battle the rhythm topic, because i also recognize how important it is for the defense to expect it on any play, and how personell subsitutions could be affected..

    I think its a daring intelligent offense, and i think we have the perfect personell to run it better then anyone, Ive said before and i'll say it again, ronnie brown is special when he knows that ball is coming to him, there is a heightened sense of urgency i feel in his game...kinda like that level he gets to around late 3rd quarters in a normal proset game....{that boy needs to get pissed off}

And you know what the best part of this is Zod, our regime and some of us, seem to be on the same level, at least all signs point to it so far.

I want all ronnie brown smashcat for this game.. lets get Pat on the field for chad, and lets work...this.. offense, from the inside... out.

I have to say that I agree 100%. And he had better be able to throw because he will never be a runner in the NFL.
