He was unlucky rather than his usual numbnut self - he was beaten by a header that hit post but hit the back of his head on the rebound!

finally UEFA see's sense and rescinds the 2 game ban on Eduardo

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/europe/8236689.stm

Not sure if you guys noticed that the following game McGeady of Celtic was sent off for "simulating"! I forgot about it until I read the article.

Now just waiting for the 6 game ban for Adebayour.. although smart money is on him escaping punishment...

Arsenal looks flat against Stand de Leige. Watched fifteen minutes of it and I couldn't watch anymore. They're not playing their game.

EDIT: Ended up tuning in on the last 35 minutes of the game. Good to see them come back and win. They didn't look like themselves up until the final twelve to fifteen minutes of the game, IMO. I was a bit disappointed with Abou Diaby in those last 35 minutes. I really think he's talented but he's inconsistent. Loses possession too much for my liking.

I saw the goal of Nicklas Bendtner and it was brilliant. A great finish. However, it still doesn't change my thoughts on him being average thus far. Every time I watch him on the pitch, I don't come away impressed as when I watch another youngster like Ramsey or Wilshere. To be honest, I watch Bendtner play out there and sometimes its like I'm watching Vermaelen play up front. Its either a heel pass or a header. Vermaelen is very good in the air however and I believe he scored once again today on a deflection. I love his game but I have a love for defenders who also have an offensive skill set.

In conclusion, I am happy that we came away with a trio of points but Wenger needs to talk to them and get them playing up to their capable level.

    Great sig hammer!

I missed yesterday's game but caught the highlights. Vermaelen is godsend. Very talented player and a surprising quality offensive game. I still think he's a better offensive player than Bendtner but plenty will disagree with me. Bendtner had a nice cross for Fabregas 90 minute goal and yet he's complaining about playing the wing. He's not exactly impressive elsewhere so I fail to understand him. I think he wants to be a target man and use his stature to his advantage. I could see that working out pretty well but watching Arsenal, its almost like we don't have specific positions as there is an incredible amount of movement up front. Similar to basketball, really, pass and cut so there's no defined role for a single player. If he really wants to play inside though, have him continue to cut inside like Overmars did in his early days as a Gunner. Worked out well. Last, I think they've got to find a way to have Eduardo play ninety minutes. You can't keep bringing him off the bench when he's such a threat.

One other note: Arsene Wenger refuses to close the door on Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh. I think he has fallen in love with Chamakh's talent as he has very good pacing from what I've seen and he has quality dribbling skills. Problem is, he struggles to finish and his main role from what I've seen is that he's a good target man as he plays the ball well in the air. Do we have that in Bendtner already? I think Arsene has to focus on acquiring a deep lying midfielder because once Song is gone for the African Cup, we're going to have a void there.

I think he's made a a vast improvement this year - still nowhere near the standard we have come to expect for an Arsenal player but he was by far one of the better players on Wednesday against SL - which was a very un-Arsenal performance, which we got very lucky on.

I agree with you on Vermaelen though Alen - probably the best defender we've had since the great Tony Adams in his Wegner years where he was encouraged to come forward more. Definately the best £10m we've spent in a while!

Juve are apparently interested in Chamakh and could even sign a pre-contract come January.

He's improved but I still find him average. I don't know, I just don't see anything more than an average player with him.

Agreed on the performance against Stand de Leige. Very depressing performance. Not a lot of movement. They just looked flat. Thank god for Eduardo's surgically repaired leg. ;)

Yeah man, I can't say enough about Vermaelen. So impressive. Great timing and he can get up there with the best of them. Even Wenger said he was impressed how quickly Thomas has adapted to the PL.

I hope they do. I don't see the investment with Chamakh going too well. His touch isn't great and I've heard he tends to worry more about his hairstyle than his game. I'd rather go out and spend 6 million on Blaise Matuidi, who's a quality deep-lying midfielder who can also come up. I wish we would invest in Chantome, the PSG starlet, but he's too expensive. He's probably near seventeen million. Same goes for Sakho, their centre back. If you haven't seen him, you're missing out. He's very impressive in my opinion. Youngest player to ever captain a French Ligue 1 side.

Yes he does but he's also inexpensive unfortunately. The players listed above, other than Matuidi, don't come cheap at all. Matuidi probably runs six to seven million.

International fixtures this weekend and hoping for an Ireland win against Italy, however because we will not catch the Italians, a draw would nab us a playoff spot.

Also Alen, something that I came across is that the playoffs will be seeded meaning that both our teams will definetly end up playing one out of France, Russia, Greece or Croatia if things remain as they are.

    How crappy is that eh?

Happy with the start, but we allowed Italy back into the game and slack defending for the corner.

In fairness though, we already have 2nd place with Bulgaria getting hammered by Cyprus so we only need 1 point from this game and the next against Montenegro.

Threw that game away. When you take the lead with 5 minutes left, you have to win the game, but Ireland again showed they can not hold onto a lead.

I'm not too disappointed though. Even with a win, we still had to hope Italy didn't beat Cyprus in Italy, which wouldn't have happened.

Italy are very limited when you take away Grosso. Lawrence for the most part kept him in his pocket and without a top striker, Italy will not go too far in South Africa.

All you want to do is get there and then it's a tourney where you will need breaks and luck to make it all the way

Anyone know how they choose the playoffs for 2nd place teams. Is it a random draw with home and away games?

Looks like Portugal has finally woken up and control their destiny

Four of the teams that make the playoffs are seeded. So the likes of Greece, France, Croatia, Russia will not be unable to meet because they have the four highest FIFA rankings and thus seeded. This means that they will play one of the other four un-seeded teams. It sucks but all Ireland can is hope is that they draw Greece or a team close to home like France. A draw against the likes of Croatia or Russia would be awful.

not 100% sure on this but i think the 32 teams that make the world cup will be known by november 18 and the draw will be december 4th. Teams are placed into pools based on their current fifa world ranking and how they performed in previous world cups. They also throw in a little bit of geographical criteria so you dont have a group of 4 european teams.

I remember being pissed watching the last world cup draw because even though usa placed first in concacaf for the qualifying round, they were in a lower pool than mexico because mexico had better previous world cup showings. Then we drew that hard *** group and mexico had to just get by Iran and Angola to advance. Not cool.
