Love the back half the Flames will put on the ice, but I'm not sure how they're going to score enough goals to be a Cup contender.

Someone printed a rumor (without citing a real source, of course) that the Rangers were planning to sign Zherdev and then flip him and a 2nd rounder for Kessel. That doesn't make a ton of sense for Boston; Zherdev is due $3.9M, that's only slightly less than Kessel figures to make.

The Kings have to be involved. They have a stable of young defenseman and they need a little more scoring. Plus, an American kid could sell in that market. The Oilers could be in it but they'd need to really sweeten the deal. Smid + a pick + one of their young forwards not named Dustin Penner.

I still think Phil will sign in Boston. No one is sending an offer sheet, the longer it goes on the more likely it is that he'll play for the tender for a year or sign a contact with a low base this year that goes up in 2010/11 when the Bruins have more cap room.

The Zherdev rumour is crap in my opinion. If the Bruins were willing to pay a forward 3.9 it would be Phil, not Zherdev.

Well, you can officially put that Zherdev for Kessel or Zherdev for whoever rumor to bed. The Rangers have walked away from the arbitration award.

Harry Sinden was the first GM, I think, to walk away from an arbitration award. (Of course he was. Who else would it be?) The B's walked away from an award to Dmitri Khristic, and the prevailing thought was "uh, you can do that? No kidding?"

That's a huge shock. Hey, it's an overpaid superstar with a crummy attitude...the Rangers must be trying to trade for him!

He was the first but not the last. They did it to David Tanabe and Bryan Berard as well.

Damn, the B's have such a ****ty history dealing with players. I'm so glad Chiarelli is changing that.

No kidding. Nobody could burn a bridge like Harry Sinden. He was unbelievable in his willingness to let a guy walk over a couple bucks. (In his defense, he was right to let Khristich and Berard walk, but still...) Dave Poulin was allowed to leave as a free agent even though he was a great glue guy for the 92-93 B's. Tom Fergus was dealt for a stiff named Bill Deralgo when he wanted a couple bucks too many. Joe Thornton, Jason Allison, Bill Guerin...jeez, if I had a buck for every time Boston let a guy leave over a couple dollars, I could buy the damn team myself.

If it is from Eklund then it is garbage. That said, if the Sens pulled that rabbit out of the hat then Brian Murray is the greatest general manager of all time.

I'm giving this a "training camps start in a week" bump. Hell, preseason starts in less then 2 weeks. NHL preseason is even less meaningful than NFL preseason.

The buzz of John Tavares on LI is loud and clear. He is the lone reason for any attention at the Isles practice rink. Seems like a genuinely good kid. I was worried he would be a typical superstar/jackass. It doesnt appear that way. He comes off as focused and intelligent.

Also a bit of a tweak by Nassau County. Owner Charles Wang has been trying to get a new arena for about 3 years now. He has threatened to move the team if he doesnt have plans for one in place by the time this season starts. His contract at the Nassau Coliseum ends in 2015 (or 2014...forget which). So he had scheduled a preseason game in Kansas City which is openly campaigning for an NHL team and has newly built Sprint Center...who builds a new arena without having a team by the way? Anyway, the same date as the game is the hearing for whether Wang's vision of the new arena will be approved or not. Im hoping not. One because I dont believe in public funding for private entity in any sport. Two, the vision he has is a monstrosity imo.

Oilers former 1st round pick Rob Schremp could be headed to the Isles if he doesnt crack the Oilers. Many Oiler fans felt he hasnt been given a fair shake the last few years: http://www.faceoff.com/hockey/teams...ww.faceoff.com/scripts/SP6Atom.aspx?id=898337

I think the threat of KC stealing the Isles is real, but I will add that it's not nuts for them to build a new arena. I am assuming, without knowing, that said arena will accommodate basketball just as well as hockey, and as KC is very much Big 12 country, they could probably be in good stead to host the Big 12 conference tourney a number of times, not to mention possible NBA exhibitions or even some Missouri or Iowa State hoops.

Is anyone else pulling for Jim Balsille? Sure, the guy seems like a jerk, but seriously, why did anyone think that putting the NHL in one of the hottest cities in the US was a great idea?

Lastly, it looks more and more like Phil Kessel will be an ex-Bruin. Predators and Leafs seem like the most likely destinations at this point.

I'm still holding out hope for the Kessel thing but I think the cap has caught up to the Bruins.

They still have the Lucic contract to deal with next offseason and Marc Savard wants to return. I still don't like it. I would flip Ference and Kobasew for picks or lower tier prospects, clear the cap room and sign Phil.

I think that if they were to deal Ference and Kobasew to sign Kessel, they'd be in the same boat next year. If Kessel has to go to make sure there's room for Savard, I can live with that.

Edit: the B's have $40M in committed salary for next year (technically $39.975M) with Savard a UFA, and Lucic and Wheeler RFAs. Morris, Ference, Thornton and Begin are also UFAs. Recchi is too, but I'm assuming he will retire. Sobotka, Stuart, Boychuk and Rask are all RFAs. Assuming the cap is $60M, that's $20M to play with. If we assume they trade Kobasew for a draft pick, that clears an additional $2.5M. Ference's salary would come off after this year anyway, so let's ignore that for the moment.

$22.5M...lots of money, right? Maybe not.

Savard will command at least $7M. Kessel seems set on getting $5M, which seems high for a fairly one-dimensional player. That's $12M right there. That leaves $10.5M for Lucic, Wheeler, Rask, and Morris, who I am guessing will be their biggest priorities, not to mention filling out the rest of the roster.

The numbers seem to dictate that Kessel's a goner. Signing Savard is going to be dicey as it is, but if they keep Kessel, it's damn near impossible.

We can kiss Phil Kessel goodbye, barring a miracle. The Leafs have offered 2 firsts and a second for Kessel and a third. Chiarelli is on board, but they're apparently haggling over the 3rd rounder.

What's bizarre to me is that the Leafs could have had him for less back at the draft. I can't believe that Kessel for 2 firsts and a second is a better deal for Toronto than Kessel and #25 for Kaberle and #7, irrespective of whether Toronto gets a third rounder back or not.

Said arena could accommodate basketball but I dont think we're getting the Nets back or any other pro team so really why bother? Its supposed to have a minor league baseball stadium built on the premises and a huge hotel and mall. Its a multi-billion dollar project. While the county has a slight surplus they are dealing with a handful of corruption scandals and have had to lay off people. Keep in mind Nassau County is one of the more well off areas in the US but already has insane property taxes and sales taxes. So where the money is coming from for this type of project I dont know. At last check they planned to tax Beer/Alcohol (Blasphemy!) as well as candy and fast food. Epic Fail.

I guess its not the arena itself I object to but the other crap as well. I love my team but I also like the way Long Island is right now. Its already got as many malls per square mile then anywhere else I have been and has one of the top 5 largest malls in the country less then 3 miles away. Not to mention that aside from KC there's 6 other places that have interest in Long Island and at least 2 of those are in NY, including Queens County which isnt that far.

The team does need a new arena but the owner should do it with his own money. He's a damn billionaire and knew the arena was old when he bought the team. The people dont work for the county, the county works for people. In good conscious I wont support this just as I dont like it when public funds get appropriated for any other team.

EDIT: Here's another problem with it. The current arena isnt making it til 2015. Just last year the scoreboard fell pregame. Lucky no one was hurt. The ice is bad, the arena is a reason free agents wont come or return. Just ask Ryan Smyth. The lease with SMG and Nassau County is written in stone until 2015. Previous ownerships have tried already to escape it as has Charles Wang. This ridiculous project wouldn't even be completed until 2015 and its not even a new arena, its a significant renovation of the old one! IF it was going to be a new arena I guess it wouldnt irk me quite as much. IMO if the county was going to approve it they should counter withs imply the new arena and the ownership gets to build the rest of the crap associated with it and lets see how quick ownership is to fund that kind of project themselves when its coming out of their wallet. Keep in mind there's already two major hotels right in the area so the hotel attached to it is nothing special and the mall I mentioned previously is having trouble keeping its store from going out.

As far as Balsille goes I like him. Winnipeg deserves to have a team again. Phoenix has minimal history and doesnt support their team. Balsille is also financially solid which in a league where the cap may drop next year is something the league needs..one less worry.

I could see the Leafs argument in that if you take the 7 pick youre adding an elite talent to your prospect pool. If you keep Kaberle youre keeping a solid first pairing D-man and a powerplay QB. In essence, youre saying that by keeping those two and adding Kessel, I'll have a more complete team now so those two first rounders should be in the back half or so of round 1. I dont necessarily agree with the logic because for a team that should be rebuilding cutting payroll and keeping picks should be a priority but hockey in toronto is like baseball in NY..rebuilding is hard to pass off on your fanbase without taking a public whipping so I can understand the logic.

  18. phunwin

phunwin Happy kids are Dolfans. Luxury Box

You'll get no argument from me about this. I'm as against public financing of a sports arena as anyone.

I think that if Balsillie was prepared to move the Coyotes back to Winnipeg, the NHL wouldn't be standing in his way so much. But since he wants to take them to Hamilton, they're fighting him tooth and nail. The NHL simply does not want to start a war with the Leafs and (less importantly) Sabres by putting a team right in their territory. There was, as I understand it, a handshake deal with the Leafs where the NHL would block any expansion into their market. The Sabres would also claim Hamilton as part of their market, though their claim would be a bit less important since it's right in Toronto's backyard.

That's a good point. I question Kaberle as a top-pair D man, though. He's a nice PP quarterback and all, and can move the puck, but he's nothing special in his own end. He'd have been a 4th D on the Bruins; I like Morris better, especially with a bit less contract.

Word is that a Kessel deal is inevitable. Nashville apparently ponied up a big offer, but the Leafs are in the lead. A deal could be finalized within a week.

It's finally over. Phil Kessel is a Maple Leaf. Boston gets first round picks in 2010 and 2011 and a second round pick in 2010.

I'd watch for one of those picks to get moved to the Rangers for Brandon Dubinsky. Chiarelli hinted at a possible three-way deal yesterday, and someone, I think ESPN, said it might end up being Kessel to Toronto, Dubinsky and picks to Boston, and a pick to the Rangers.

There better be something in the works, I'm LIVID as it is and not getting any tangible return for a young, gamebreaking, scoring winger will only make it worse.

I know draft picks are beloved but ****ing draft picks are NOT going to help this team win THIS year. Chiarelli seems to be in between on this. Do we want to win a Cup?

I'd be interested to know what Nashville had on the table. They have about 150 young D-men that would have helped NOW and going forward.

LOL! My emotions got the best of me in that above post.

When I look at it and the money Kessel got in Toronto this move almost had to be made.

Savvy and Lucic are free agents after this year (Savyy UFA, Looch RFA) and they are more important both short term and long term than Kessel. Giving Kess the kind of money he got from Burke would have made signing them impossible.

We lose Kess's 40 goals. We get back Marco Sturm's 25 goals, Bergeron will get 20+ (instead of 7), Wheeler should pop in a few more and Krejci's production should improve a little. Add in more offense from the backend (Derek Morris, Matt Hunwick with more experience) and the offense will be fine. I'm concerned about the playoffs though, that is when you need a guy who can score on his own and the Bruins don't have that right now...unless Patrice gets back to where he was before his concussion.

Another thing that just crossed my mind.

For the 2010 draft the Bruins currently have two 1st rounders, three 2nd rounders and a 3rd rounder as well as two 1st rounders in 2011. The Leafs picks (especially for 2010) will be in the top 10 of each round. That is a LOT of ammo when the RFA's start hitting the market in 2010 (Kane, Toews, Semin, Wolski, Ryan, Backstrom, Coburn). It's also conceivable that they will control the 2010 draft with 5 picks in the top 60.

The lines without Kessel actually look alright. Without Kess the top line will be whoever happens to be going at that time along with Savvy and Looch. I look at it more along the line of pairs of players.

    1.) Lucic and Savard
    2.) Krejci and Ryder
    3.) Bergeron and Sturm

That leaves Wheeler, Recchi and Kobasew as "top 9" forwards who will get mixed and matched with those pairs of players. the 4th line will be Bitz, Begin and Thornton. With Krejci likely to miss the first month, the pairings will be in flux until November (with Zach Hamill or Vlad Sobotka likely making the team because they are "skilled" types who can play in your top 9).

With all that ammo (draft picks) they can also be movers at the deadline if they feel the need to bring in a top 6 forward.

I still don't like Kess being shipped to a divisional team but seeing what Brian Burke paid Phil and what we have for a lineup today and moving forward they are ok.

Brian Burke is a hypocrite. He set a new salary structure for players like Kessel after WHINING likea ***** about other teams "throwing grenades" into everyone else's salary structure. 5 years, $27 million on a 2nd contract. How do you think the Blackhawks feel today? They KNOW that Toews and Kane are both going to want that and more seeing as they are better players than Kessel and the same age.

  23. phunwin

phunwin Happy kids are Dolfans. Luxury Box

I like the trade, personally. I don't love it, because I would have preferred to keep Kessel, but the contract he received confirmed my earlier belief that the B's simply couldn't fit him under the cap. $4M would have been reasonable. $5.4M, though, is just too much.

Those Leaf picks are probably going to have some serious value. I don't know that we'll be able to use them as ammunition to pick up RFAs; rather, I think the B's will have their hands full maintaining their own free agents. However, picking up talent at the trade deadline will be a lot easier, especially if the Leafs suck this year (and they will).

I think Kessel's going to disappoint. He goes from having Marc Savard center for him to having (probably) Matt Stajan centering for him. Major dropoff. I also think that having gotten what he wants, Kessel's going to lapse on defense this year.

Whats your opinions on this hit by Dion Phaneuf on Kyle Okposo. Forgetting the fact Okposo sustained a mild concussion it looks to me like Phaneuf leaves his feet before the hit. I realize Okposo was skating with his head down so he probably had it coming but I cannot believe the NHL didnt see anything wrong with this hit! Am I missing something? Either way I hope Scott Gordon puts Phanuef's number on the chalkboard before the Isles play the Flames next time.

Phaneuf is a douche bag, plain and simple.

He should get 3 games in my opinion. It was charging for sure and he did leave his feet. It was a borderline cheapshot. It's also an exhibition game and Okposo was not going anywhere with the puck. The dude is 80 feet away from the net with a trailing defender and a defender in front of him, there was no need to come in for the kill shot like that.

I dearly want Celine to get his and he will one day. Good to see he is still playing like an idiot though, taking himself totally out of the play and ignoring his defensive responsibilities so he can get some highlight time. Probably the most overrated player in the entire league.

Actually, what was most galling to me about that was Phaneuf backing off a fight and then jumping into the fray after the fact. Seemed dirty to me, and couple that with the fact that it's preseason and that was completely uncalled for.

Ryder is playing on the wing with Savard right now and looked great last night. They had no chemistry last year, but this time might be different; he might have a leg up in the competition to be on the #1 line. I've got to think Kobasew is on the Bergeron line, and thus Wheeler and Recchi on the Krejci line. Hamill potentially making the team is exciting; he's looked pretty good this preseason. Having that much depth at C is a real luxury. If he could play on the third line and be productive until Krejci comes back, and maybe even give the 4th line some scoring punch after that, that would be a huge help.

Kessel's new team, on the other hand, is in such bad shape at center that they're contemplating moving Kessel to the pivot. I can't imagine a worse move.

I just realized something. The B's, have 2 picks in round one: their own and Toronto's; and 3 picks in round 2: their own, Toronto's, and Tampa Bay. Given that, there's a good chance that they'll have 4 picks in the top 40 of what's apparently a very strong draft. If Toronto's #1 is top 5, they might be in a position to trade up for Taylor Hall.

    Flyers start their season 2-0.

We killed off two (2!) 5 on 3's against Jersey tonight IN JERSEY and Emery looked a lot better than Brodeur did and the man was celebrating his 1000th NHL game ( to him).

We scored 5 in jersey and 2 in carolina with richards and carter putting up goals in both and Laperriere (i think), Powe & Carle notching goals in Jersey.

We were seven for seven against carolina and 1 for something against the Devils.

I can tell it's going to be a long season when it comes to us being in the box again. I think we've got a target on our chest because we play aggressive hockey.. thankfully we've got Pronger and Timonen to help kill off those penalties.

Up next: Capitals @ home finally.

We played inspired tonight but talent wise this team fights a losing battle just about every night. Roloson looked good stopping 39 of 42 before he got outclassed on the shootout. Incidentally thats the area we will probably most miss Dipietro for a while longer. He's always been one of the most athletically gifted goalies, maybe ever (just in terms of pure athletic ability). Hes always been pretty good on breakaways and in shootouts. His W/L record has been a reflection of the offense and defense in front of him.

Another 1st overall pick and this team will have a few real building blocks with Tavares, Taylor Hall, Okposo, Bailey, Bergenheim, Streit, De Haan and a few others.

Those Flames retros are so nice. The more teams bring back the retro look the more I realize that the way things were is so much better than how they are now.

It's funny. Back in the day teams would design their jerseys on the back of a napkin. Now, they have all kinds of consultants and design people do it and they all look like turd (with a few exceptions).

Good to see my B's get back on track after the opening night *** kicking the Caps gave them. They kicked the hell out of the Hurricanes.

Isles have points in two straight games! Woohooo 2 straight OT losses. Playoffs baby!

Tavares just missed getting his 2nd goal of the year. Spectacular play by the soon to be comeback player of the year: Pascal Leclaire. Tavares though is so much better then the scouting reports said he was as a skater and as a faceoff guy. He makes a great effort to get back on D and backchecking.
Matt Moulson is on the first line and has 3 points in 2 games with Tavares and Okposo. G and A for Moulson tonight.
    Okposo had a goal.
Biron looked good until he let in the OT GW while he was faced with a 3-1 break and he was just overmatched.
