Brett Favre probably will not go down in history as a top 10 QB of all-time.

Marino himself admitted about a year later that he was done. He said that was the main reason he didn't go to Minny. He also talked about only playing for one team and how that was important but the main reason was his health. He felt he could still throw it but that his legs were shot. He said he felt he could could pull off one good game but not more than that.

The truth is he was done.

    Jesus.

Marino was done before his last season here; the achilles injury had altered his throwing motion and over time the scar tissue from it worsened it more.

    Leave the man alone.

What short memories people have. Marino was really banged up. Yeah the arm was still good, but his legs were done. He couldn't even slide in the pocket anymore.

And Brett started out strong last year as well, only to fade as the season went on...doesn't anyone remember the Jets December last year?

Same here, but at the same time, im glad i got to see him play. Now about favre, i mean sure he is doing good right now, but lets see how he does at the end of the season, if i recall, he went 8-3 with the New York Jets...and well you all know what happened there...

apparently you don't understand football young-in. There was blatent Passinterference when the receiver was hooked by Woodson. Come on Now Rogers was terrible in comparisson to Farve.

    With all due respect:
Yesterday you stated that at this juncture Ricky is better than Ronnie, and now this?

I really couldn't disagree more with the premise of this thread. Every time I see some veteran player sign with another team, whether that be Jerry Rice in Oakland, Emmitt Smith in Arizona, Brett Favre in Minnesota, Edgerrin James in Seatttle, or whoever, I have a sense of pride that Dan Marino - the face of the Dolphins for two decades - didn't fall into the same trap.

In a lot of ways those players who switch teams tarnish their legacy (and I would point out that the Favre-led Jets were 8-3 last year before the wheels fell off - don't count your chickens before they're hatched), and I'm so happy Marino made (and that's the key - HE made it) the right decision and retired as a Dolphin.

I'm a bit stunned you'd rather see our franchise player go on playing for another team. Me, I'm selfish. I'm glad I didn't have to see him play for another team. I'm glad I didn't have to watch his physical skills (which were going) continue to erode as he tried to improve his already great career, selfishly hanging on to individual glory.

As much as I hate the thought of him wearing anything other than Aqua and Orange I can see the OP's point. He still had some gas left in the tank, and he could have been the missing piece for a playoff team on the verge of a Super Bowl. For selfish reasons I'm glad he didn't choose that route.

I thought Marino was done as well. Dan has a pretty tremendous ego (all the great ones do), so I have a hard time believing he wouldn't have gone somewhere else if he felt he could still play.

It would have been worse if he went to the Bears.

When I saw him tossing the rock in Hawaii during one of those ex NFL sandlot games on the beach, I just thought "man he can still do it."

If it meant going to another team to get the ring he deserved, that's a tough call. But he in no way should be compared to what Favre did and the same conclusions drawn. Favre is a POS who waffled for many years with his team, kept them in the dark in the offseason and eventually they had to move on with Rodgers. Then he comes back and cries that they screwed him? Then all he wants is to turn and play for their biggest rival? Favre is a great qb, but he's a POS. Marino is a great qb and is a man on and off the field.

Whatever his personal reasons for retiring were, IMO, I think he did it the right way and with dignity.
Farve saying Dan is the best is about the only thing I've believed that has come out of his mouth.

What Marino did was rare these days. Very few who play for a significant amount of years are able to retire from the same team that drafted them.
Think it's not meaningful to most of them? Look at what Jason Taylor said and did.
As for Brett Favre. IMO he's just a mercenary. I don't understand how he can spit on past loyalties as well as the Packer faithful and play for their biggest rival. Nor do I see him as a top ten all time.
In fact I wouldn't mind revisiting this topic at the end of the season. He started out strong last year as well, but wore down as the season progressed. No surprise if the same thing happens again this year.

Dolphin fans would NEVER put a Marino jersey on their doormat. That would be ****ing blasphemy.

Packers fans did that with Favre's jersey.

To me that meant a lot.
