Not sold on Curtis unless hes a fair bit cheaper than a Bowe/Boldin type or a good bit less than the Edwards trade. As nice as Bowe would be though, hes about all the Chiefs have to throw to, and even if he is in the doghouse, hard to imagine them giving him up. Question - with the precedent set by the Edwards trade, who may you be willing to give up in a trade involving players? Bowe for a 3rd(conditional to a second) and a low rounder, and throw in .... Cam Wake? Moses, Anderson, Walden? Might have to send a WR as well. Ginn? Or one of the "possession" types (Hartline, Cam, Bess).
I'd offer them a 2nd straight up.......if they want a WR too, maybe Turner I know a 2nd is hard to part with but guys like that are hard to find and we need one badly...
Chris Henry has changed and has great ability. Evans or Henry would be big upgrades in this receiving core. I wouldn't mind packaging Turner and a pick for one of those guys.
Do you think Turner would be enough? We might have to consider one of our starting 4some. Jets gave up their #2-3 guy (at the time). Would you do a second and Bess? Or a 3rd and 5th and Bess?
not until the end of the season, then they will draft a top WR it is what it is have to develop what we've got we have some diamonds in the rough to polish up don't have to go to the jewlery store in 2009
I disagree......we need a big, tall guy out there and if Turner is too raw right now, we should consider what's available. Personally I'd rather us look into trying to pry Bowe loose from the Chiefs. But Jones should be pretty cheap as well as cost us no picks.
Well, I don't think we should be hasty either way, Greg C had a great game when it mattered, and signing Jones does not A) Allow Roth to be activated B) answer our needs at kick returner.
I like Evans. And I'd love to get Jackson in FA next year. But with all the trading we have done with the Chiefs, I would LOVE to make a play for Dwayne Bowe. The kid's 25 with amazing upside. Get it done Bill!
Because KC was close to converting Tyler Thigpen to Wr and they signed Bobby Wade who was on the street, chances are good Bowe is not on the shopping list.
I agree.....just sayin it wouldn't hurt to inquire In fact, I say lets start spreading some internet rumors to get the wheels a rolling "I saw Bowe hitting on J-Lo last night" BRB, gotta hit some blogs
I don't really think we need a big time WR, we're good with what we have. We don't need a true #1, our offense is focused on the run. All we need is for our WR's to stretch the field and play like they did last night, we don't need an Evans, Bowe or whoever in this offense. I think Ginn can be our #1, they just need to add some plays over the middle for him, utilize the playaction pass and take the occasion shot down the field. It worked last night against a pretty darn good defense and one of the best CB's in the game (Revis). Now that the offense is opening up, that is going to spread the defenses giving both the running and passing game more room to operate. With our ability to run the ball, teams are going to have a harder time covering our WR's. Ginn has the ability to get open, Bess is very good in that regard, Cammy was on pace to be our best WR last year before injury and Hartline has shown some promise. I think we have enough to make it work and work effectively. Adding a big time WR through trade will only rob us of the chance to fix the defense in the upcoming draft. We need at least 2 LB's, preferably ILB's, and someone to eventually take Fergy's place. Our secondary is going to suffer from growing pains, we saw that last night, I think the main focus should be ILB, a NT and possibly an OLB. Trading a high pick for a player that isn't going to be used to his fullest (we're a run oriented team) is overkill IMO.
We have no real red zone threat, no one that can make a tough catch in traffic. We need more of a scoring threat than Ginn over the top. Edwards last night, showed you how valuable a player like that can be. I think Henne deserves one. Ginn is nice player, but a weak number one. This offense would be insane if we upgraded our WR and TE unit, with just one, big, physical, play making threat. It would be used to it's fullest because it's the perfect compliment to our running game. Henne makes our current WR unit better.......a play maker will make Henne better.
We need a playmaking WR very, very much. I was on that "We're fine with what we have" bandwagon before the season as well, singing a much different tune now. It's pretty clear we're lacking in the WR department. While I agree we need to fix the defense with draft picks, a WR who can consistently get open and actually get some YAC for once is top priority imo.
I think we have a few people that can make catches in traffic, we just don't give them the opportunity. Edwards had the game of his life last night, even then he dropped a big pass. He'll go back to his old self soon enough IMO. I think we have a playmaker on the team already, now that opposing defenses no longer will be able to play tight like they were with Pennington, we'll see our running and passing games become more productive. I think that's the problem, you're still judging our players by what they were (or weren't) able to accomplish in a Chad Pennington led offense. Last night showed that we aren't going to be a dink and dunk team that doesn't allow our WR's a chance to make plays after the catch. NFL teams are now on notice and will adjust accordingly, no longer playing a short defense. With more room on the field our players should be able to do more with the ball in their hands. A perfect example of what Henne can do that the other Chad couldn't (besides the 50 yard bomb) was the 3rd down pass on our last drive, that pass had zip. Yes is was low and Cammy (?) didn't have a chance to make YAC, but that's the type of pass that gives your WR an extra second or two to make the catch and go. The other Chad didn't have that, his passes actually took an extra second or two to get to his receivers allowing the defense an extra second or two to close in on the WR. Also lets not discount the playaction pass, Henne was 7-7 and 140 yards with 2 TD's in PA, that's a huge addition for us to have an effective playaction. Give it time, we have a whole new offense now, I think we have the parts to make it work effectively.
IMO we gotta wait to see how this offense thrives under Henne. It's clear that Ted Ginn may be more used from now on... there's no rush to acquire a WR since we have a solid group, let's evaluate it first, maybe with Henne we might have a better pass offense...all we need now is evaluation imo
Maybe Hartline.....maybe. But still, our WR unit is mostly comprised of chain movers. Probably....he's a head case and somebody that's a bit too risky for my taste. However, last night he showed us exactly what we're missing. He single-handedly almost won the game for them and was a blessing for Sanchez. You get a big physical guy like that and it improves your whole unit and the QB. Which is exactly what he did last night.... we have NO ONE on this team that could do what he was doing. Ginn can make plays, but what you saw last night is pretty much all he offers as far as a scoring threat in the passing game. In the red zone his straight line speed is useless and he's just not much of a threat at all once the field is shortened... Believe me I'm well aware of the difference, I wanted Pennington benched following that last playoff game and wanted us to go with Henne to start training camp. Henne's arm and our new found ability to go down field only makes it more important that we upgrade at WR and if possible, TE as well. Again, Cammy is a chain mover, like Bess.....in the red zone or in a crowd, they just don't have the physicality to make plays and fight for the ball. They're needed in the passing game but as far as play maker, red zone threat, they're not the answer. I think you way over value this groups abilities and misjudge what kind of receivers they are. They have value and are needed but they, like Ginn are limited. I'm pretty sure that come this off season I'll get what I want. I'm certain the FO must see what we're missing and how valuable a big, physical target for Henne would be. I too want LB's, a NT, a Safety and etc... . but those positions don't put points on the board. If you wanna compete with the top tier teams, teams that put up points regardless of what defense they face, you have to be able to match them. If we open up this offense, the defense we currently field will do fine....it's not like we can't upgrade both anyway. We have picks and cap space to take care of all those things mentioned. As soon as we get a real play maker, you'll see what I'm talking about. Henne will be flat out dangerous and every skill position player on the team will benefit from having a play making threat on the field. Personally, I prefer a FA WR as I'd rather not spend 2 or 3 years waiting for one to develop. A player like Dwayne Bowe or Vincent Jackson will make far more impact on the score board than any LB or Safety that we'll be drafting next season. We need to get away from the philosophy of holding the opposition to ten points and win by kicking FG's. And for that we need better playmakers and a legitimate red zone threat, which we currently don't have and as good as Henne looks, he's not going to magically change any of these WR's skill set. They are what they are and that's limited when it comes to play making ability.
Well put all around. I feel Ginn is going to be at his best production as a situation player. Hopefully we can get him rolling on return duty, and then play him as an occasional deep play guy, crosses/slants etc while a #1 is taking the attention of the extra DB. Bess, Cammy and Hartline are all similar guys. Important players, but again not really the spread of WR we need. Adding a Bowe, Bryant, Evans type WR will make our offense even more electric and far better. It would give safties/DBs even more pause before heading for run support, give us a red zone target, an anywhere on the field tackle breaking, catch making player.
Like I said, I like our WR group, but we need a #1. No WR on this roster can get YAC, they just can't. And that's my biggest concern. Having the best running game in the NFL really is a huge help, opening up the playaction and the passing game in general, especially with a strong armed QB able to keep the defense honest. But our WR's have been very inconsistent getting open. We're not a dink and dunk offense anymore, but in Henne's 2 starts, he's had quite a few checkdowns because WR's can't consistently get open. Camarillo does the best job getting open imo, and needs to be on the field much more. But there's going to be plenty of times throughout the year where drives stall because a lack of a true #1 who always gets open, and can get YAC.
Outstanding post, and I very much agree with the bolded part. Ginn is in no way, shape, or form a playmaker, nor is any WR on this team. Ginn has world class speed and is a deep threat. But a deep threat does not equal playmaker at all. A playmaker can go deep, but most importantly, a playmaker can shed tackles and make huge gains after the catch, which no WR currently on this roster can do, though I really like Hartline. No WR on this team gets YAC, it's dissapointing. They catch the ball and get tackled or run out of bounds. No jukes or stiff arms to be found. Only time Ginn has ever shown me playmaking ability as a WR was last year vs. Buffalo. But you really hit the nail on the head. I'd much rather go after a WR in FA like Vincent Jackson next year, and would rather not trade away a draft pick. But, if a player like Bowe became available, you have to greatly consider it.
This is NOT a good draft for receivers. Bowe for a proposed second beats the pants off of anything we would be able to get in ths next draft. (I seriously doubt Dez bryant falls far enough for us to snag him in the first.)
