Funny, he says that cause when the Wildcat has been at its best this season Miami has scored 23, 38, & 31 points. When will these critics finally give us some respect. Just cause you can't explain something does not mean it does not work.

    Who?

I've been avoiding investing any thought in anything people have to say that criticizes the WildCat, until teams can consistently come up with a gameplan against it.

To say that no team will win a superbowl with it is a pretty huge statement that I'm pretty sure he'll be eating his words for. Basically he's saying the Miami Dolphins will not win a super bowl, because no other team actively utilizes that formation, and we're the ones that really find a huge success from it.

He's just mad he had to play backup to Dan the Man during his career :)

I've said this before, but if there are those out there who STILL believe it's a gimmick, nothing will change their mind.

Jaws dug himself a hole during the Colts and Jets games, and isn't man enough to admit he was wrong about it.

No Jaws, you dumb ***!!! What if our defense would have stopped one of those quickie drives the Colts put together? Huh?

    That game was lost because:

    -2 dropped Ginn passes
    -poor 2 minute drill
    -horrible defensive play
    -Peyton is Peyton

That loss has nothing to do with the Wildcat.

Jaws thinks running the ball out of the I-Formation is a gimmick that will never win any games.

    Exactly.

Funny how the old crumudgeons who diss the Wildcat as a "gimmick" don't realize it is a slight tweak on one of the oldest formations in football.

Don't forget, the Wildcat is a formation, not an offense.

indeed. the Wildcat is far more old school and "true" to football than Jaws' ideal offense.

not that there's any "true" offense. whatever works is what's true to the game. there's so much strategy involved, that's why it's so great!

I don't understand..Didn't he say during the game that he was starting to like it and was constantly saying how effective it was.

It also makes me laugh how excited Gruden gets when we run it, he lights up like he's 5 years old on christmas

I was thinking of that comparison too.

Jaws is a good announcer and has a right to his opinion. It's like Ronnie/Justin smiley said, stop it. stop it, and say whatever you want. It doesn't matter what anyone says, the dolphins will do what they want.

i dont even understand the point in Jaws saying this after seeing us complete that deep bomb to ginn on monday night.

Chad henne beat the jets with the wildcat providing stable yards. We beat them with big plays passing, not in the wildcat.

I think he does have a point in that we have to get more out of our passing game, and in particular our deep passing game then we did against the Colts. But that has little to do with the WC.

I mean sure, in the NFL today you have to do more then just run the football whether its out of the WC or a more traditional set you HAVE to be able to throw the football in this league, its not enough to just be number 1 in running the ball and think that you are going deep in the playoffs if thats all you can do.

But exactly how does the WC get blamed for our lack of deep passing success in the first couple of games this season? I just dont follow the logic here at all.

Quite true and this is why I really don't understand former players' attitude towards the WC. It's basic blocking and tackling. It's power running game football. We give ourselves an advantage, because we remove the guy who becomes useless after the hand off - the QB and replace with another blocker. That's all.
By his logic, if the QB hands the ball off and then steps back and watches the run, it's okay. That's football. But if the guy who was going to get the hand off in the first place just gets the ball from center instead of the QB it's a gimmick.

I disagree. If Miami plays 100 more games like they did against the Colts they would win 100 of them.

In the history of the NFL that has never happened before.

it did until the game against the Colts

Having 10x the amount of offense as another team "should" win you the game, however the Steelers lost to the Texans in a game where they had 10 times the amount of yards.

I like JAWS I think he does good film study and has some good points of view. however he's a quaterback at heart and mind. Of course he dosen't like the fact that the ball and control of the game is out of the Quaterbacks hands.

If we are going to stay with the Wildcat than we need to advance it. We need to throw out of it as Often as we Run out of it..Henne should get some plays in it. Were not dealing with Pennington anymore so lets add the future into the mix..

I read some of the comments under that story (the whole thing was very well written BTW).

Saying the Wildcat is a gimmick because it didn't work in the playoffs is like saying the Patriots passing game was a gimmick because it didn't work in the Super Bowl (2007).

In both cases, one team was physically better than the other and dominated the line of scrimmage. In 2008 the Ravens front seven was markedly superior to the Dolphins offensive front. This is an area where Miami has significantly improved in 2009.

As for the mantra of "you can't beat people straight up, so you have to trick them"..... these people would have fit right in with the British troops during the revolutionary war. After all, they'd fought their wars face-to-face on a battlefield prior to that.

It doesn't matter whether Miami is 'good enough' or not. The formation works for them. The people who take offense really have no reason to take offense.

But make no mistake, Miami can run the ball out of a traditional formation this year. They are very good up front.

Great analogy. Another reason the "gimmick" talk is still around, in my opinion, is because only one team runs it well.

If 4 or 5 teams committed to it the way Miami has, you'd see less criticism.

yup. we didn't lose because we couldn't pass the ball, we lost because our defense got off the field in 5 plays every drive after giving up a very quick score.

I guess I am old school because I still believe that if you have a dominant running game and a good defense you win everytime or most everytime with minimal passing. As strong as our running game was agains't the Colts, if our defense just slows Manning down we win.

Its funny if the Wildcat is just a gimmick then why are so many teams attempting to incorporate some version of it? Its only a gimmick if the opposing team is not expecting it and it works once in a while. The Dolphins use it as a weapon and part of their offense and every team that plays us has to be prepared and to expect it. Jaworski is just an old school quarterback with old ideas that a Quarterback should be on the field for every offensive play.
