I'm going book shopping at Barnes & Noble tonight, and I need a recommendation for a good page-turner. I usually gravitate toward sci-fi, but I'm open to suggestions. Let 'er rip!
Good idea. Last stuff I read was the Forgotten Realms series, like all of them. Tore through them in like a week.
If you've never read The Game: Penetrating the Secret Society of Pickup Artists, it's an amazing book. No joke. By Neil Strauss.
I love the historical novels genre, but they tend to be a little long so if your in for the long haul I have a couple of good ones. Of course, the classic, if you havent read it, since its still my favorite story of all time, is Don Quixote. Also, I loved "With Fire and Sword" written by Sienkiewicz (I read the Kuniczak translation which was really good), great story taking place during the Polish/Cossack wars in the 16th century or so. These arent history books but they take place in the past and give you a glimpse about life in those times. I love this style (follows the story of a hero with a good and diverse cast of characters) and both of these are amazing stories that'll entertain you. I always tend to read the stuff that has stood the test of time rather than whats 'new', but thats just me.
Freakonomics by Stephen Levitt. Yes it is a book by an economist, but it is really good and honeslty changed the way I view things in the world. It is a short read too so you can plow through it quickly.
Okay, back on track In regards to Sci Fi Zoom, I always end up gravitating to Clive Barker it seems. Just think he and Dean Koontz are THE premiere writers of that particluar gruesome, mystery genre...no offense to Stephen King, but IMO he doesnt even come close to the other two...
Brother Odd from Koontz is very good...actually, I dont konw I have not read a good book from Koontz Twilight eyes is probably my all time favorite from Koontz You can study his work here http://www.deankoontz.com/books/new-books.php As for Barker, I personally love the entire Hellraiser era. Also Imajica is a thought provoking novel IMO. I dont think he has anything real recent out (Imajica is 1991)
I really like Clive Barker also, I remember reading a short story collection of his when I was in high school and I was like wow.
I agree with AzFin. Fear Nothing and it's sequel, Seize the Night were the last too I read from Koontz. It's actually a trilogy, and I've been dying for the third book called Ride the Storm to come out, but there is still no release date yet. Although not scifi, I recently finished Plum Island by Nelson DeMille. The lead character, detective John Corey, is a hilarious alpha-male type who had me rolling in laughter on more than one occasion. And this is no comedy. He shows up again in The Lions Game and Night Fall.
Different strokes bro. I can go from reading Koontz and follow it up with Denzel Washington, direcly to Tony Hillerman, to Koontz again to Tom Clancy....like to mix em up actually
I very nearly picked up Brother Odd the last time I was at B&N, so it looks like that's a leading contender.
Yeah, I have a autobiography by him actually. Very intriguing as well. I have always admired him to great length, and mama found the book.. Pretty good stuff
well i know you have probably read them since they are awesome, but any of the Ender's Game saga or any of the Dunes Saga (though quite frankly avoid the prequels, those are awful)
Ever read The Count of Monte Cristo? Another book I found engrossing (more ways than one) is Black Rain.
Here are a few SciFi series that I liked. The Honor Harrington series by David Weber - Military SF Most anything by Peter Hamilton. Only has about 9 or 10 books out but all good. The Night Dawn Trilogy and the Void Trilogy. Margaret Weis - Normally a fantasy writer but I have never read any of them. But her SF works The Star of the Guardian series is really good. The Phule series is you like a little humor in your SF by Robert Asprin. Of course one of my all time favs is the Ringworld series by Larry Niven. Also the "Known Universe" novels and the Man/Kzin books. The Heechee books by Frederik Pohl. I know that I have read a ton more but this is all that comes to my mind at the moment.
A great sci-fi type book is The Historian. It is about Vlad the impaler and how Dracula is still amongst us. Good book that has a ton of factual history wrapped around a nice fiction story. Another interesting read is I, Lucifer by Glen Duncan. Basically, it is about the devil wanting to write his memoirs, so he takes a soul (Glen Duncan's) and writes his memoirs using the authoer's body. Interesting stuff.
