A thread that covers the Patriots personnel moves. For the first entry: So the pats passed up on Cleo and Signed Ex Raider Andrew Walter for Brady's backup. http://myespn.go.com/blogs/afceast
add Derrick Burgess to the list of Patriots. Raiders | Burgess traded Thu, 06 Aug 2009 15:01:35 -0700 Patriots.com reports the Oakland Raiders have traded DE Derrick Burgess to the New England Patriots for undisclosed draft considerations.
Yep, sort of knew it was coming, hopefully old man Davis worked Belicheck for all he was worth. The price was a 3rd and a 4th for Burgess, Good OLB sort of lost in the suffle in Crazyland: http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/5510/career;_ylt=Aqsc_7ZXOvkiI1gCixqOtvD.uLYF His game really picked up out in Oakland, made the pro bowl a couple of times, but he looks fairly inconsistent or put himself in Davis's doghouse The Patsies apparently solved their OLB pass rusher problem
He could fall flat on his face though too. This guy has been a DE his entire career and now has to make the switch to OLB in only a few weeks. Right now he is going to be a situational rusher for them. Hopefully they gave up the two picks to get him though. That would be nice. Less ammunition for them next year.
With the pats, it is almost never a question of which picks they gave up PT, it's the time they waste on a player who does not fit into their system. If they rely on Burgess and he does not deliver, they have virtually no pass rush.
Yet another former Phin shows up in Angmar, Vonnie could work well for the patsies, a part of me wonders if the Pats aren't trying to pick player's knowledge of our systems..
They've missed on quite a lot of draft picks period; at least in the past several years they have. What's kept them afloat is 1. They completely pulled a rabbit out of their hat with Brady in the 6th 2. Their OL drafts awhile back were money 3. The Wilfork pick 4. A heavy dose of the right FAs
They also hit on the players they needed to hit on like LT, C, DE and made do with inferior talent and recycled Veterans at the Lb positions.
That being said, what happens if Brady, Moss or any Starting lineman on either side can't go a game? They are SERIOUSLY screwed
Psshaw Az, then at halftime the injured player would rub their surgically implanted HGH gland and be ready to go...
KC...Matt Casell was injured last night with an ankle and MCL, so he knows the offense and can step right into it. KC needs help all over...it almost appears as if BElichck was hooking Scott Pioli up...
Yea but I think they feel ok with Croyle and Thigpen at the position for now and I don't think Cassell's injury is all that serious. I could see them both putting a claim in though.
Thigpen is on the trade block though PT, and Pioli has picked up the Pats third string Qb from the waiver wire, Matt Guiterrez(sp). The Ram's Bulger broke a finger so O'Connel may not make it past the Rams
http://www.kffl.com/fantasy-sports-blog/2009/09/02/wes-welker-fantasy-football/ Wes Welker could miss week 1 with a "undisclosed injury"...
This must be flying under the radar. However, IMO it's significant since the Pats are already thin at LB. Linebacker Shawn Crable has been placed on injured reserve with a groin injury, shelving him for the season. The second-year player from Michigan, a third-round pick last year, started 2008 on the PUP list before being put on IR with a shin injury so he still hasn't played in an NFL game. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2009/09/05/pats-crable-will-miss-another-season/
Per Adam Schefter on ESPN's SportsCenter The Patriots traded DE Richard Seymour to the Raiders for a 2011 first round draft pick. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4450767
Really dumb on the raiders IMO Al Davis is constantly trying to do moves like this and look where it has gotten that team.
This is surprising and probably important: Lewis was cut because Edelman has shown that much, which means when the Pats go 4 wide, they have what they believe is a Welker clone to line up on the other side of the formation. Patsies Wr lineup Moss/Edelman/Welker/Galloway
And Belichick was raving about Lewis's versatility, something about when he was a beagle they had problems game planning against him. to me that means Edelman showed them he can play at a high level, high enough to chase off of a fine NFL pro in his prime. http://www.boston.com/sports/football/patriots/reiss_pieces/2009/09/greg_lewis_rele.html It sounds like they gave up a 5th rd pick for Lewis/
belichick has loved lewis since he came into the league. IIRC when the eagles snatched him up he's called practically every year to try to get reid to trade him and w/the eagles drafting two WRers recently I guess reid felt he had the necessary depth to make the move. The eagles used that pick to select Fenuki Tupou who was placed on IR by Philly two days ago.
Patriots Wr corps is really banged up: Patriots are vulnerable, Miami must get their rear in gear and take advantage of this situation.
"This week, as early as Monday, the Patriots are expected to sign 12-time Pro-Bowl linebacker Junior Seau, according to an NFL source. Seau visited the Patriots last week and the two sides laid the groundwork for a deal to be completed this week that will allow the former Pro Bowl linebacker to play his 20th NFL season. Now, after losing veterans such as Tedy Bruschi, Mike Vrabel, Rodney Harrison and Richard Seymour, the Patriots are turning back to one of their leaders." http://sports.espn.go.com/boston/nfl/news/story?id=4532045
Just saw where the Pats cut Joey Galloway. Linkage: http://sports.espn.go.com/boston/nfl/news/story?id=4579557
There was a time when things like this never happened to the Pats: With Galloway cut I'd guess Aiken will take over some Wr duties.
