Well what's funny is the only real knock we saw coming out of the camps was that he couldn't manage the 2 minute offense. In fairness they did pull him out a few times to run the wildcat, but in the last minutes of that Jets game, he sure managed it pretty freaking well. If the only thing he's got as a knock is that he needs to work on his 2 minute offense, I'm ok with taking that one limitation. Let's just make sure our defense ramps up to cover that and make sure we don't often need to score in that last 2 minutes, and put up all the points in the first 58.
I would like to believe that, however Billy Volek and Rick Mirer are not good quarterbacks. They started their careers really good. I am hoping he can keep it up.
Ryan Leaf had a QB rating of 111 once. Shaun King had a game with a QB rating of 109 once in his rookie year. Ken Dorsey 101 in game. None of those guys are starters...and QB rating as a stat means absolutely nothing. The difference between 130 and those numbers is very small.
are you kidding me? there's a huge difference between 130.8 and the numbers you mentioned. the most difference in the numbers you gave is 29 points, the least difference in the numbers you gave is 19 points. that would be like me saying there's a small difference in a QB rating of 72 compared to a QB rating of 101 or even a QB rating of 82 compared to 101. if i said that i would be wrong.
Henne's performance vs the Jets was the most impressive a Miami QB has looked, talent wise, since Marino. There may be some bumps in the road ahead but I don't feel it's jumping the gun to be pretty happy concerning the QB position right now.
all this negative talk is two steps beyond unwarranted & these hubris accusations of "homer" are made on a Dolfan Forum think about it: we have no reason not to be optimistic this game is a tremendous opportunity for Miami to turn around the 2009 season Sunday is more important to the Dolphins than to the Saints & it is a home game: 24/27-Miami you can take it to the bank $$$
I think the biggest difference is that this isn't Henne's rookie year. IMO there would be far fewer QB busts if teams would groom these guys for a year or two. I think Henne would have been even better off if he could have been groomed this year as well. But due to his demeanor and extensive college experience I think that Aaron Rodgers is a better comparison. During Rodgers first season where he started 16 games, he had two 3 int games with a rating in the 50s. He had a couple of other games with ratings in the 70s where he just had lower completion percentages. Other than that all his other ratings were 80 or higher. That's about what I expect from Henne. He'll probably have a couple of high turnover games and a couple of games where he struggles with his accuracy but other than those I expect I expect his rating to be 80% or better. In my experience if your QB's rating is 80% - 85% than he's playing well enough for you to win. There are obviously other factors in whether you actually do win, but your QB is playing well enough that he's at least not preventing a win.
What Pennington had: smarts, discipline and consistency, can be coached or taught, provided the brains and motivation are there. The arm Henne has, you either have or you don't. Henne has upside. Penny did not.
So far I am very impressed by Henne and he is the best young drafted QB the Fins have seen in a while. However I agree with others that only time will tell. What people have to realize though is that a lot of rookie or new QBs have success early and struggle later as teams get tape on them (see Mark Sanchez for example). The key will be if Henne can still be successful at that point and not make too many mistakes (which will come). He has 11 games to prove he is the QB of the future in Miami and so far so good...but I do have one bit of advice for him against the Saints "watch out for Darren Sharper."
I have to say that ever since the Sand Diego game, even in that game, with the pick 6 I came out and like the way he handled himself... I liked what he did with the Bills (6 sacks and all), he took sacks no INTS...liked that... The guy seems to not get rattled, I know taking sacks are bad, but even as he stares his receivers down, the ball seems to get there before the DBs... His play actions are getting better, but that has to do with the respect of by Defense because this year WE CAN RUN THE BALL... I think the QBS best friend is a good running game and receivers, TE included... I think Chad will be OK... NOs' D should not be any more dificult than the Jets...
Gregg Williams is going to throw some pretty complicated things at Henne. However, so did Rex Ryan. I think you'll see a very similar gameplan--a lot of big sets, a lot of Wildcat and a continued effort of a vertical passing game. As long as Chad Henne continues to be smart with the football, we're OK.
Your post is logical. But, I ask because I have never ever heard Sparano or any other Miami Dolphins coach say Pennington was only picked up to provide a temporary fix to our offense until Henne was ready. I have never heard Sparano say he was being groomed to take over for Pennington either In fact I have never heard that from anywhere but on this board. I have heard Sparano say when asked on multiple occasions that his QB was gonna be the QB that gives us the best chance to win. I am not saying it wasn't happening i am just asking when this was said and by whom. I understand that is where we are at. We are here as a matter of circumstance. It is easily arguable that Pennington would still be our starter had he not got hurt. It is also easily arguable that Pennington could have and may still play several more years for the dolphins. Unless Sparano has said something about the situation that I am not aware of.
The difference is pretty much a TD and a few completions. Also as I said QB rating means absolutely nothing, it is possibly the dumbest stat every created in the history of mankind.
This is what I was led to believe by what was being said, mostly by the media and what I could see with my own eyes. Henne had out performed the other QB's in camp as a rookie, only to take a back seat to Penny, who was signed to a 2 year contract. And you're right, the Fins would have probably let Pennington continue to start until we were out of contention. Personally, I was done with Penny following the playoff loss last year and feel this team would be in a better position right now had Henne entered TC as the starter. Pennington gives us the best chance to win, started ringing hollow after that playoff loss......to be honest, him going down in that SD game was the best thing that could happen to this team. Especially since our FO wasn't going to make the change on their own. If your question was did I ever hear Sparano come right out and say that Penny was a stop gap until the Henne era? No I can't remember that I did... My opinion is that if it weren't for last year's soft schedule, the wildcat and a surprisingly good showing on defense, Penny would have been on the bench by game 12 and the Henne era would have started last year.
If i recall during the offseason where was a quote from Sparano that basically said Henne was the future QB. And everything Pennington was saying in his press conferences reinforced that (saying that he is going to try to hold that off/prevent that). With Pennington's contract ending next year it's kind of evident that was the plan... or at least unless something happened with Henne
I believe I may have heard that as well I just don't think I can provide a link or actual quote..... Agreed...
Henne doesn't get "rattled". The robot doesn't flinch. The robot has prepared an extra week for this game. Prepare for glory.
Henne posted the highest combined QB rating for a QB in his first two starts in NFL history once again. case closed!
Henne is the IceMan riding the undulating Miami Ocean securely affixed behind the Orca-5 the pod protects
The playcalling sucked. Ginn and Fasano choked. We didnt utilize Brown and Williams like we should have. Henne's two INTs came off WR drops. Did you watch the game? unbelievable.
I wouldnt say case closed because we really don't know what we have in Henne. I will say that I am not surprised that he didn't play well. He is just starting to get his feet wet and it is going to be two steps forward and one step back (IMO).
Which WR dropped the last pick six? Were YOU watching the game? I'm not talking about the first INT either, I'm talking overall. Henne did ALL of the things I said he would. Locked on receivers, had no feel for pressure, and made a lot of poor throws when he had to think quickly. Of course everyone is so starving for a franchise QB they will deny he did any wrong.
totally agree, The problem is the WR's. TE's and the defense. The offense with all its woes scored 34 points. You should win EVERY game in which you score more than 30 points.
