As I was telling Gish in a PM I signed up to be an organ donor today.

I have always been on the fence about this. My mom is a donor and she has always told me it's for a good cause. Still I found myself having second thoughts and not really making a commitment to becoming informed.

While at the gym today I met a man. He told me basically that he had been given 4 months to live, and then proceeds to pull out his phone. On his phone was a picture of his granddaughter born just last week.

He said if it weren't for people donating their organs he would have died and never would have gotten to see his granddaughter be born.

    I signed up immediately after.

I just wanted to pass this story along to anyone who may have been on the fence like I was. Meeting someone who it had helped in person helped me ..

dunno figured it was worthy of a topic :confused2:

One person can save 8 lives and enhance 50.

I don't know how accurate that is, but that's what I was told. If it's even halfway true it's worth it. If it saves one person's life it's worth it.

I'm an Organ Donor. Figure if I die with Organs in good shape why not try to save someones life?

the only part I'm against is the actual dying, but I figure once I go why not - it isn't like they will be any use to me and do anything but rot so someone should have a crack at them.

I think it is great for you to bring up. There is no doubt organ donation is a great selfless act that is dear to my heart.

As of right now my mother is on the waiting list for a kidney/ pancreases transplant. Her diabetes has left her kidneys in very bad shape. Once she gets the pancreases transplant, she will finally be able to live a life without diabetes.

I urge everyone to sign up to be a donor.

the reality is i'm sure a lot of people probably wouldn't mind being donors, but just haven't taken the time to give it one second of a thought, and thus haven't checked that box. if the DOL instituted some mild reward program as an incentive to get people to check that box, that might help. i don't know... like 10% off your licensing fees at the time? i think that would make a lot of people that were otherwise indifferent sign up for organ donor.

Just make sure you let your significant others know before you shuffle off the mortal coil. A lot of the holdups with organ donation is the family not knowing. Especially if the event is sudden your near and dear aren't in the position to be making calm and rational decisions when the doctor says "do you mind terribly if we start chopping into him and and using him for spare parts now?"

I've been an organ donor since I got my first driver's license. Everyone in my family is and we all know it.

They just better get them quick, as my intention is to be cremated!

I also signed up to be an organ donor when I first got my license. I figured it's not like I need any organs once I die and if I can save someone's life why not and never really thought twice about it. Personally I think everyone should be (but respect anyone's stance on not being a donor), you never know what can happen in life.

I've been an organ donor since I was 16.

IMO, it's INCREDIBLY selfish for anybody to choose not be a donor. What the hell do you think you're going to use your organs for when you're dead?

3,000 years ago, this would be a valid excuse for not donating...

No one in my family is an organ donor except for myself. I figured i do not need my organs when i die, so i might as-well give them to people if it could save their lives...

Isn't reincarnation based on your soul or spirit being placed in another person or animal?

yeah but what if your spirit doesn't have the spirit of lungs  then how would you breathe?

i dunno, all i was trying to get across is that i can understand why some people wouldn't want to do it.
