    complete truth.

i'd look into some of the more desk jobs, a'la "chairforce" status. you'll get all the same benefits, the ability to work 9 to 5 and get weekends off, and a smaller chance of deployment. for a person concerned about his family, that might be worth thinking about.

many people who wash out of other career fields run the risk of drawing security forces, which is most definitely NOT what you want.

For many people, the Air Force is what you make it.

The Air Force pays 100% of college tuition while you're in. The hard part is working in the night classes while still doing your day job. If you have the committment, you can get a degree before you get out. I've seen a lot of guys sit around on shift duty working swing shifts and mid shifts bored out of their skulls (COMM guys and Command Post guys) when they could be using that idle time to study and do homework while monitoring their systems and waiting for the phones to ring. I've seen other guys who went balls to the wall studying and got all sorts of degrees and certifications. You get out of it what you put into it.

That said, there are jobs out there that will send you to a war zone faster than others and some jobs where getting that off-duty education is tough because of the hours you pull. But there are probably more jobs that aren't that way.

I like being overseas. In my opinion, the overseas military environment is more family oriented than stateside bases. People tend to band together more at overseas bases. And, overseas, dental is free for your dependents. In the states it's not, although they do have that Delta Dental Care program to defray the minor stuff.

Of course, you'll also get to see the world.

You do know that there are broadcasters in the military as well--Armed Forces Radio and Television Service. http://myafn.dodmedia.osd.mil/

And, while you won't be able to see every Miami Dolphin Football game (unless you find someone with a sling box to send it to you every week), they do show them occasionally and you can always keep track here and via the highlights. Somehow I think this is less important than ensuring your family is taken care of.

The Air Force was a good thing for me. I did my 20 years and now I win a small lottery prize every month on the 1st. It's not much, but it sure does help.
