Holy crap he is playing unbelievable. Looks like his Texas days. Would be amazing if the Titans turn the season around and make the playoffs.
If the Titans make the playoffs, that means they run the table. Which means they beat Miami. Not gonna happen.
Not moi. I was never down on him. Actually criticized those who were so down on him, pointing out his record. Is he a prototypical Qb? No. But neither was ronnie brown.
I'm really happy to see VY turn his life around. Looking at the game last night, I feel, he was the difference maker. Have to add BTW AJ had three drops in the first half alone, what gives? I thought he was one of those "good hands" people. I also believe this is our year to beat the Texans!
Judging a QB with a RB is apples and oranges IMO. VY was drafted to be the franchise QB that didn't pan out but all the sudden were seeing a completely different player. AJ may drop passes but he also makes huge plays which people forget about the drops. Ginn does the opposite as a receiver.
I've criticized him because I think he deserved it at one point. I'm still not sold on him as a passer, however. He's played some struggling pass defenses and he's playing with a strong run game. I can't criticize him too much though, I'd be interested in seeing how he would do in a WCO. I missed last night's game but something I wonder is, why doesn't Tennessee implement some of the pass plays that he ran at Texas? (i.e. stick concept, four verticals, hitch routes, etc.) He does win though and that's all coaches ask for.
Man, Steve Young laid into him pregame.. sounded just like KB.. all the same talking points. Like Muck said.. we have trouble with athletic qb's who can run.. seems I recall 3? third downs that he converted by running.. I groaned thinking that this will kill us.
He's ok in that type of offense. He's never going to be a prototypical pocket passer, so it's nice to see TN play to his strengths. FTR, I never liked Vince Young as a QB. Don't have anything against the guy, just thought he was another Mike Vick - average passer, excellent runner, bad decision maker.
The problem with VY is that he's not and will never be a great passer so if evaluated on that basis he will fall short. But if used correctly he will help you win games. I counted three 3rd downs where he converted on his own. These were obvious passing downs (not QB sneaks). Keeping your offense on the field on 3rd downs helps you win games. Most QBs do it by passing and IMO that's still ideal, but the fact is that VY still did it. Also later in the game the D used a spy on VY to stop him from running. So he had one on one coverage downfield. He may not be able to consistently fit it into the tight windows that better passers can, but b/c he's a running threat he doesn't always have to. And yes he's benefitted from an improved running game, but he's also part of the reason it is improved. The D has to respect his threat to keep the ball and run out the back. Not to mention how effective he was on those option plays. The bottom line is that he helps a team win. He doesn't do it in the manner we're used to, so the KB's of the world will complain. But the fact is that he's something like 22-11 as a starter and all the haters can do is try to make excuses and allege he's not a big part of the reason why.
I can't argue with that. I was certainly someone who had Cutler rated much higher that VY coming out, but for what ever reason VY seems to be a much better leader. That's despite all the crap that went down last year. Right now I don't trust Cutler to ever cut down on his INTs and lead a team. VY, on the other hand, is clearly progressing. I saw him look Ss off last night and progress through some of his reads. Now I would prefer to have a guy who can win from the pocket, but I also hate it when QBs throw the same stupid INTs. I'm just not sure I trust Cutler to ever be that leader that the team rallies around. And the team just seems to respond to VY when he's in there. I'm not sure how to quantify that leadership against the better pure passer. Right now the only thing I have is the fact that VY has the 3rd longest regular season win streak. He's behind only P. Manning and Brees. He's clearly not in their class as a passer and probably not as a QB either, but he's clearly pretty far up the list compared to the rest of the NFL as a winner.
yeah, neither are your ideal qb scenario. the season before last, and now...there is something about VY that inspires his teammates, and lets them believe that they will win. cutler is just so damn dangerous to his own team. and he's a guy who cant take any criticism. from the team, coaches, fans. i think phil rivers is similar to cutler, that on a given week, he can absolutely implode on his team...and more than once or twice a year. both guys should never be elite.
My point being, we run a very non-traditional offense and it has worked. Two years running. Prototypical QB isn't 100% necessary. For all of Vick's faults, the falcons had some decent seasons with him under center.
Good point about Vick. For all the talk about how Vick was never a good QB, he was good enough for the team to get to the Conference Championship game. I don't see how anybody can keep saying that you can't win with a running QB. It has been proven wrong over and over. Now I do believe its difficult for a running QB to have long term success if he never develops the ability to be effective from the pocket. But the level of passing ability required is somewhat diminished as long as their running ability continues to force defenses to play him differently.
something you have to point out but can't statistically record is what he does to his teammates. his stats aren't gaudy and he's not a great QB, but he manages to raise the level of play of those around him - no denying that. on the same token, i'm not a fan of those giving jeff fisher a lot of crap for not starting VY earlier. remember there was a reason he was benched in the first place. we can't assume every player will magically turn the corner and come back like this. yes, fisher was wrong to not start him earlier but you can't blame him with the past performances VY had turned in last time he was on stage. VY has played pretty well the last few weeks though. congrats to him.
Fisher wasn't wrong, IMO; he made his prior decision regarding Young based on the realities of the moment. The fact that Young seems to now be playing lights out may well be a product of that benching, and both its motivating and teaching effects. I never liked Young as an NFL QB, never will. But like I said before that draft, he is a guy who can put a team on his shoulders and make it better than it is by his leadership. Doesn't make him an NFL QB; but it is a good quality to have on a team that has little else.
what a game winning drive, what a game winning td pass! 387 yards today.... wow, just wow. Good for vince. and man oh man, is kenny britt a special WR or what! woulda been nice to have him!
we just lost to the bills... a loss to the titans is absolutely possible. i know you posted that a few weeks ago.. but ugh..
I dunno. 23-11 as a qb in the nfl is pretty dang good. Now, one can argue it's the team, or it's the defense etc., but the exact same team that went 0-6 is now 5-0 with VY in. 4-2 td/int, 90 qbr. it appears he may have (and I stress the "may" as it's early) realized his strengths, his weaknesses, and works with them. His stat line today is amazing. 62.8%, no INTs after 43 attempts, 387 yards, 100 qbr. Who doesn't want that?
I am rooting hard for that team this year if we fail to make the playoffs. What a story it would be if they could make the playoffs. Great coach, a QB who is starting to play from the pocket, great great story.
i'm right there with you. when i turned to that game, i was in a really bad mood (for obvious reasons!) and the titans were inside their own 5. while the drive that ensued didn't eliminate that foul mood, it made me forget about it for a few minutes. i agree with the people who believe his play now is a product of his benching. VY will never forget how to use his legs, but he had to take a seat and really watch and learn in order to figure out that he has to do more at this level than he did in college.
Good for Young, he really does look like a different player. That game winning drive maybe something people look back on as the start of a something special for him.
Most of you remember I liked Vince very very much coming out of Texas. I've always thought he had the arm strength and accuracy to play NFL football. The question has been his ability to learn, which I never questioned because of his strong desire to succeed. It seems like it's all finally clicking.
Its funny, I loved Vince Young while he played for Teaxas, hated him when he came to the NFL, and the beginning of this year, i started to like him again, ever since he said he is going to the Hall of Fame. I hope this is the start to something amazing for him in Tennessee! and to think, they are just going to part ways with him
How can this be? VY having success at the NFL level. Didn't he get the memo from our very own self proclaimed #1 authority, KB21, telling him that he is a bust? Must of got lost in the mail or cyberspace. KB better send it again, before VY leads his team to anymore wins. Total busts just aren't supposed to do that.
Did you see that Mack Brown's the one who told him that? Once Brown told him that, Young ran away with it and since has been winning games.
