Hence my quip about Turkey season. We've been paying him 15 mill a year to go hunting in Northern Florida.
I thought the Rockies were paying the bulk of his salary until this year ( or maybe last year). Anyways, it would be nice to sit back and get 15 mill. I hope he comes bace and earns his money this year. I would probably bet money that he is out with something before the break. Like someone said earlier, he is cursed. That fluke foul ball almost nailed him last night.
I think the first couple years in Atl the Marlins were paying that bulk of that salary. Talk about getting screwed.
Hampton is like the Penny Hardaway of the MLB. I'm sure the guy wants to get out there and earn his paycheck. But damn it erks me that he gets paid to rehab. Its also a slap in the face to football players who aren't guaranteed their contracts.
Hampton scratched from his start, due to "the weather conditions" in Atlanta. i swear i am not lying...
They showed him warming up in the bullpen. Looked like he tweaked something, possibly the groin or hamstring.
yeah i just heard them say he grimaced and ty might be his side or groin. Jeff Bennett to start. unbeleivable
I'm shocked that they dropped that series to the Pirates. They're not usually slow starters but of course fast starts the past couple of seasons haven't helped them so who knows.
And also next time they play the Pirates they should just walk Xavier Nady every time. I didn't stay up for the whole game last night, I couldn't believe my eyes when I read that once again he knocked in the winning run for them.
I wasn't surprised at all, in fact I was anticipating it. Resop hasn't been able to throw a curve ball for a strike since High School, and suddenly he's trying them on 3-2 counts. It was the curve Nady lined into center for the game winner. I dont understand the pitch selection. Bennett, Boyer, and Ohman all handled Nady with fastballs IN. Resop throws 97 and got beat with his 3rd best pitch. Either he shook off Corky Miller, or Cork isnt very knowledgeable about pitch selction IMO.
If I was the Braves I would tell Hampton....... NO PLAY, NO PAY!!!!!! I wish I could get $15 million/year and sit out for a couple years. He should be ashamed to take a paycheck. Many athletes have stepped up and said I cannot take any pay if I am not out there doing my job, but not Mike.
Larry Bird....he could no longer run the floor that well at end of his career. The Boston Celtics were going to pay him $6 million for his final season, even if he rode the bench. Bird told him he would not accept a paycheck unless he could play. He ended up retiring. That's one thing I always respected about him, even though I am a Celtic's hater.
Refreshing, but not surprising considering the source. Bird has always been a class-act. You're gonna be hard pressed to find a guy turning down $15 in guaranteed money. As much as I would love for us to spend that on someone who doesn't get hurt every time he sneezes, we're stuck with this goofball.
the Braves web page posted an article about how bad Hampton feels about it, and how he didn't sleep last night. i won't cut and paste because it made me want to hurl. somebody needs to buy him one of those ''Cowboy Up" t-shirts Kevin Millar wore a few years ago off of E-Bay. on a brighter note, i bought my tix, for two weeks from tonite whe the Braves face the Dodgers. taking my wife and kids for the first time.
Sounds great. Boo Andruw Jones once for me. I know he did a lot for the team but he deserves one boo for his craptastic batting average over the years. Have fun.
i will definitely do that for you. we will be in Atlanta all weekend but are only able to squeeze in one Brave's game unfortunately.
Braves get a much needed win tonight. I sure hope my wife remembered to record the game while I was at work. Apparently Kelly Johnson had a pinch hit grand slam. Man, why is this is the game I have to be at work during? Chipper had 3 hits again. No surprise there, they are playing the Mets after all.
And it's a mini sweep! This was a very good game for Smoltz. Hopefully next time they'll feel good enough to let him pitch 6 or so. The bullpen looked good even with the Soriano scare at the end.
Nice to set an early tone against NY. We showed them 2 things this weekend: A) Our bullpen is better than theirs. B) Our bench is deeper. Tex really stepped up and had a big 2 games.
I saw the first couple of innings before my power went out. Smoltz looked pretty good. As did Santana. His changeup is amazing. Its always nice to get off to a good start. Hopefully we can just stay healthy and keep moving along.
great win, and a fun game to watch... the Kotsay to Tex double play was awesome. Tex's stretch and dig of the short hop had me whooping it up (i'm a former first baseman). and Yunel Escobar has already made about three plays this season that made my draw drop. he had one today that was so far in the hole that Kelly Johnson didn't cover second, even though Yuinel had penty of time to get the lead runner. pitching matchup was everything it was billed to be. Smoltz and Santana were both on today. Soriano was a little shaky in the ninth, but Tex's diving stop saved a tie ballgame. great win! dang i love baseball.
I agree. He did a great job just hustling over and snagging that ball to begin with. Yunel Escobar is an outstanding ball player.
Glavine vs. Cook tonight against the Rockies in COL. The Rocks have scuffled early in the season dropping their last 5 games. Cook was beaten last year in his only start against Atlanta going 6 innings, allowing 4 ER on 6 hits. Right Handed lineup tonight which means Prado will most likely get the start at 2B. EDIT: Kelly Johnson is apparently healthy enough to start and will get the nod at second tonight.
Ron Gant had a good point in the postgame saying that he thought Cox should have walked Holliday, setting up the double play and making someone other than their best hitter beat them.
