I made this thread because there are some folks (Dolfans) out there who claim that they don't care whether or not Miami's record gets broken. Well, I care. And I think every Dolphins fan should care about the best record in not only NFL history, but sports history. This record means a lot to many people, including Don Shula. It just boggles my mind how some people could not care whether the record gets broken. I'm not "questioning fanhood" like someone mentioned. All I'm saying is that as a Dolphins fan, that record is like my Holy Grail.....and I would be DEVASTATED if it was broken. That is all. Thank you.
Records were always meant to be broken. But what validity do i have hanging onto that record when i wasnt even born yet. We should beaten the Colts and Saints to keep them from breaking it. To me, its nobodys fault but our own if they run the table. Its a record that has stood for 35 years. I think thats a pretty good run.
And to add that last nights Saints Victory has us only 2 games back and if we win Sunday we are only 1 game back to win the division. I care way more about that than protecting some record from 35 years ago when i wasnt even on this earth yet.
I don't think it matters if you weren't alive when it happened. That doesn't mean that we as Dolfans can't hold on to it and cherish it forever.
I am not sure I would be DEVASTATED, but I would be very disappointed. Over the years it has proven to be the trump card other fans just hate. “My team won 6 super bowls!” So mine is the only undefeated team in NFL history! Shuts em up, or they try that “That is ancient history”, well so are several of the super bowls your team won, but you still count those. BAM Trumped. It would indeed be a bad day if we would have to share that title.
We had an opportunity to beat both of those teams and yet we failed to do so. The way both teams are playing, if they go undefeated, its because they deserve it and i cannot knock them for that. Im actually rooting for Manning to go undefeated believe it or not.
I agree with shaunm, I wasn't even a thought back then, let alone born. I don't know man, IMO that whole argument sounds stupid coming from a 24 year olds mouth (me). As far as I am concerned every year its a different team with the same name. The 72 Dolphins weren't MY team. They were the team of the fans that were alive and following them at the time. Would it suck if the record was broken? Sure, but thats what happens with records, they get broken over time. I rather the Saints or the Colts break it than the Pats or anyone else in our division.
I see where your coming from, but most fans that i say that too simply replies with dude, you werent even alive yet. Its kinda like Celtic and Yankee fans talking about 18 and 27 rings. Its like, bro... you were alive for 2 of those.
I guess then, the importance of the record will pass when we older Fin Fans join the big super bowl in the sky… I truly hope, that these Dolphins will soon bring another record of glory to the youth so that they to can enjoy years of gloating.
Why does it matter that you weren't alive to see it? So with that state of mind, we as Americans shouldn't celebrate 4th of July because "we weren't alive to see the Revolutionary War"? That argument sucks. Sorry.
For me, it's the most important Dolphins record out there. No 1 player's stats will ever top it for this is the best team sport in the world.
I think all statistical records will be broken, such as yardage, touchdowns, etc. But this is the one record that I believe will not be broken. I just can't fathom it happening.
I'm a fan of the sport before I'm a fan of the Dolphins. If a team goes undefeated, and earns it, I'll tip my hat. All I really care about now is the Dolphins winning a Super Bowl.
i was saying this yesterday but there is a percentage of twenty something fans who just dont care or even actively root to see the record broken so they dont have to hear about it. its just strange to me. maybe they have just become fans during the worst period to be dolphins fans. In a certain sense they deserve the most praise of any of us who were fortunate to actually see the Dolphins when they fielded good to great teams. Unfortunately though there is a loss of respect for the franchise over the years from ssome of our own younger fans. Its sad, because as a Yankees fan, the whole benefit to being a Yaankees fan is the history. Miami has a unique history too and I am surprised people dont respect it. This attitude of "well I wasnt born then" is foreign to me. I wasnt born when Babe Ruth was around but I will remind Boston fans every chance I get of that trade. That is part of being a fan. You join the family, you join the history, the tradition. If I'm a 21 year old Montreal Canadiens fan I'm still talking trash even though I havent seen my team win a Stanley Cup. Why, because by becoming a Canadiens fan I also took on their history and their past glorys are my past glorys. If your great great great grandfather fought in the Revolutionary War are you forbidden about praising him becuase you werent alive? The team is improving and will write new successful chapters for the young fans but dont trash the past because you're only trashing yourself
If it does get broken I look at it two ways. 1) been there, done that 2) it took you that damn long to get a perfect season? also, remember that the rules have changed drastically. that was FOOTBALL. This is some game where we can't tackle QB's or jam WRers. I'd rather have THAT perfect season that THIS one 7 days of the week and twice on sundays. DOLPHINS FTW
I love that the Dolphins went undefeated, I really do. It makes me proud and sometimes brings a tear to my eye when i watch the Americas game sepcial about the 72 Dolphins. But we had our shot at both undefeated teams this year and we blew it. We cannot control the destiny of those teams. However, i will always fight the accomplishment to the fullest extent. People say, "oh the 72 dolphins schedule was soft" and i come right back with, "ear morrel was a 40 year old backup that came in and won games for an injured griese!" I didnt see Matt Cassell come in and do that last year win the Pats had a soft schedule? I could argue all day regarding the 72 team. I am just suprised that some were actually routing for the pats last night to protect our perfect record when we are still alive in our division. How on earth can you justify cheering for the Pats to win just to protect a 35 year old record that has no bearing on this current team. I want to win ball games and i want to win my divison. Cheering for the pats is blasphemy and should be punishible to the max! We are not done this year, and in no way would i ever cheer for someone to win to protect a record.
oh no i agree with you on your points about us still having a shot to win the division. i was fully rooting for the saints. i meant about the 4th of july thing.
well for yankee fans, for me there has been 5, a lot of them have seen more! But i do think the record will stay with us. None of these teams are better then the 07 pats
I know how you feel, just like I didn't want Danny's records to fall. However you have to realize that all records will eventually be broken, including Miami's perfect season(well matched anyway). It's never been a question of *if* someone will ever match that mark, it's only a question of *when*. My twocents.....
This is how I feel. I feel proud to be a fan of the only undefeated team. But, I must say that I wouldn't be so upset should the Saints or Colts change that. I think Manning and Brees are part of the "class" of the NFL. Extremely classy people and I wouldn't mind either of them being a part of something special. On the other hand, I think it would be absolutely devastating should New England or the Jest go undefeated. I had never cheered so hard against a team than I did when New England was making there run. And, it couldn't have ended better, 18-1.
Neither team is good enough to go 17-0. Aint gonna happen. Maybe in the regular season...but right now...Minnesota is a better team than the Saints. Colts...and actually the Saints... Really havent dominated alot of their games...Saints did yesterday...but to be honest...I think the Pats were like Eh...who cares? They know they have a good team and losing yesterday to the Saints wasnt gonna change anything. Other than that...look at some of the Saints other recent games. They dont stop the run. Colts...they have been outplayed like what...6 games in a row now. Aint gonna happen all the way to an undefeated season. Not in the playoffs...
This is without a doubt a record that i would hate to see broken unless it is our own dolphins. Im hoping the colts and saints go down every week!
You're right, It doesn't matter. And for those of you who suggest it does, I guess you're not happy that we won WWII either? I guess it's foolish to honor and learn about those who fought. Because we weren't alive then. I guess I shouldn't be proud of the guy who invented the TV. Or the Egyptians who figured out how to make beer. Because I wasn't alive then. It's the most perfect record in football. And may it never be broken. Cheers to the 1972 Miami Dolphins.
As I wrote in another thread. All of us that lived through the '72 season deserve to be proud of the accomplishments that team had. We had THE team, the coach of all coaches and some of the best players ever. They fought and scrapped their way through that season and came out perfect. I would never take away from any of the teams we've fielded since then, but I think those of us that pulled for that '72 team and watched those guys should be allowed to pull for teams to lose and not mess up our record. It's true, the game is different today. Back then, those guys were tough, played bloody and hard. We didn't have qb's you couldn't touch and all the rules they have today. I am not saying the rules to protect the players are all wrong. I'm saying those guys had to suck it up and play, there was no whinning and crying for penalties.(ala brady) So, all you young guys let us revel in our pride and let us up lift the '72 Miami Dolphins. We've watched the great, the good and the bad times with this team and we still love them. We've earned the right to be the first generation of Dolphin fans. And to stand up for our greatness. God bless the USA and the Miami Dolphins. AND the great Don Shula. Thank you for your time and patience.
What about those who weren't alive for the season? Don't they have the right to be proud of the record also?
I'm very proud of it. It's unique and it belongs only to the Dolphins. Here's to hoping the Saints stumble along the way [maybe in the georgia dome?]. They can go 18-1 and win the super bowl, thats fine. Then people will stop talking about the 2007 patriots, and our record will still be ours.
I care as much as anyone here that we are the only team so far to have a perfect record. What I don't understand is everyone talking as if that record can/will be broken, perfection can NEVER be broken, equaled maybe but broken NEVER! There is only one FIRST time guys and we are it, case in point can anyone here tell me who was the second or third person to climb Everest, no, but everyone remembers the first always! Our place in the History of NFL football is secure and no one will ever Better it Ever!
