Yes. The fumble was awful. But, the play call itself just didn't fit. That said, there's probably other play calls that could be scrutinized as well that didn't end as badly as that one.

Seriously, this is absolutely ridiculous. It's like people are trying to top each other at doing an awful job at second guessing plays that didn't work.

Davone Bess, prior to this, had two reverses, both of which went for over 10 yards and the first down in his professional career. Davone Bess has more than adequate speed to make the play work.

People are acting like they had Anthony Fasano run a reverse.

Bess is slow for a WR. That does not mean he is slow by any other standard. He is certainly fast enough to run an end around.

I was cussing when i saw before he fumbled. Bad things when end arounds happen with players not named Ginn. We lost Cobbs for the season from one I believe.

Don't worry I spread all of my frustration around and yelled when Ricky put the ball on the carpet 3 times as well. Perhaps I should consolidate all of that disappointment and point the finger at the man who called those plays.....

And I find it equally ridiculous that people are actually defending this play call.

We had scored TDs on drives of over 60 yards on our previous 2 drives. We were methodically moving the ball on the 3rd consecutive drive. Our QB was 14 of 16 and had completed his last 12 passes. Jacksonville had ZERO answers for our base offense. WHY then would we throw in a trick play on 1st down? If you can give me a good answer to this question please do.

It was just as dumb as having Ricky Williams throw a pass against Buffalo when the Bills couldn't stop us from gaining less than 6 YPC on that opening drive.

And I'll agree with everyone else who also thought it was stupid to give that ball to Bess of all people.

Bottom Line: We don't need these trick plays anymore. Chad Henne makes plays. It took this coaching staff 8 weeks to finally let this kid throw the ball when we as fans knew he could throw the ball after the first Jets game.

Because a fumble is going to happen from time to time. Sometimes ppl just get the ball knocked loose. Yeah that bothered me, But not nearly enough as our coaches putting a player in a situattion where he has little chance to succeed. That really bothers me

This is the part I don't get and I know we will never agree on but to date (this season) Bess has run that play 2 other times and has a 5.5 yard average gain. That's not bad, and not once on his other two runs did anyone make a thread calling it a bad play.

Well I did not make this thread. I don't know the numbers, But 5.5 is not bad however the end around is made to fool defense and get them going one way and than go to the other. Ginn gets to the corner faster and has a much better chance for the play to be a success. I don't understand why you run it with Bess. Ginn has proven he can take it the distance while Bess never will. Bess just isn't fast enough.

HEY THIS IS WORKING DONT DO ANYTHING ELSE EVER!!!one is way worse playcalling than theoretically getting cute and getting burned because of it.

This is deeply, truly, and genuinely wrong-headed. Chad Henne has NOT been capable of the kind of game he has had the last two weeks for anything close to that period of time.

This is Ginn's third year in the NFL and he hasn't figured out how to run routes yet, so give him more time to figure out the cleat thing.

Exactly! DONT DO ANYTHING ELSE!!! Just ask the Colts, Pats, and Saints if that is worse playcalling. Those teams execute the same offense week in and week out for the past 5 years and they consistently put up the highest points in the league every year.

And if you wanna say well they have Manning Brees and Brady, fine...but no offense gets as cute as the Dolphins, and since our base offense has been moving the ball better than it has been since 2002 these cute trick plays have come back to bite us in the *** several times.

And I'm sticking to my assessment that there was absolutely NO NEED to attempt a trick play the way we were moving the ball and the way we had moved the ball on the 2 previous drives. Same as against Buffalo 2 weeks ago.

The Saints actually use about as many trick plays as anyone does. You should theoretically remember a key Reggie Bush end-around a couple weeks back as an example? Coincidently, they've scored with that play more than once since then.

Bess doesn't have the speed to get to the outside, that's the only problem i have with it ... just like the route he ran splitting the safeties. i have to believe that these were called to catch the defense off guard (Bess was open on the route) and the success that Ginn had ... but he just doesn't have the speed for a reverse.

now i didnt see the end around with bess and i'm not defending the playcall but imo they used bess there because we tried a end around earlier in the game with ginn and what happened? thats right!!ginn blew past the 2 linemen that were supposed to get out in front of ginn and make wholes so the coaches said "let's try it with a slower reciever in hopes that the linemen can get out in front and clear some space. given the right execution and it doesnt matter how fast you run,30 yrds of open space is 30 yrds of open space.

How many times does it need to be mentioned that Bess has had ten plus yards and a first down on both of his reverse/end around plays as a pro prior to this? Saying Bess doesn't have the speed for it is dead wrong.

i looked it up and you are correct but what are the odds of him doing that consistently
bess may never have a run over 10 yards rest of his career
what are the odds that he picks up valuable yards in that situation
    very slim
i like my chances with the red hot qb
or if you must run the ball use your running back
still say it was a poor call at poor timing
just like the ricky pass at the goaline against the Bills
henning gets cute and something bad always happens

That is pretty ridiculous. Ginn is very good at end arounds. You make it sound like him being very fast is a negative.

The odds are more than good enough to try it. Since we have established Bess is indeed fast enough to run that kind of play, wherein lies the opposition? There was reason to believe the blocking was sufficient. The down, distance, and field position were not atypical for that kind of play either. The only complaint is that it didn't work.

That's simple. He fumbled. The previous times we have run Bess on an end around zero threads were created. This time it's the talk of the town. But something tells me you already knew this :tongue2:

it was not my intention to make it sound like very fast is a negative but on that play it was either ted ginn not letting his linemen getting in position by blowing past them(linemen are slower than most speed runners)or the linemen not getting off their original block and getting upfield..either way you look at it ginn running "very" fast from the get go was definately a negative for that particular play.you gotta have your blockers in position for this play to work a majority of the time.i felt ginn couldve eased up a tad for the linemen to do so then go "very"fast through the break.

Ginn did go for 16 yards on his end around...he can't sit in slow mode waiting for fat *** linemen to get out there and block. Once he gets outside, he's got defenders coming from front and back...the only place to go is forward, and go there fast.

yes he went for 16 yrds with no blocking support and he also didn't fumble the ball but it also couldv'e gone for 35 yrds just as well if the play had been executed properly.the linemen were more at fault here imo for not getting off their blocks and upfield quick enough but i still think ginn should be at the stage where he see's this and gives the linemen just a second to reallign themselfs to block for him.do i want him to sit down and read war and peace? no all it takes is a hair of hesitation.

The thing is, if you have Bess run that same end around that Ginn got 16 yards on, it may be stopped for a loss of yardage.

You have to remember Ginn gets to and around the edge so much faster than Bess and has already outrun a DE and an OLB and can therefore get upfield where all he has to deal with is the DBs. I'll take Ginn getting around the edge because he's so fast rather than Bess not being able to get around the edge and as a result having to cut-in for a 1 yard gain at most.

IMO, the play was just dumb on so many different levels

Does anyone have a video or gif of the play they can post? I don't remember it. I mean, I remember Bess fumbling, but not the end around leading up to it. I am honestly drawing a complete blank. I'd love to see the play in question from the beginning.

because the defense most likely would not expect it... never the less.. it was still one of the worst play calls of the season.. especially how we were running the ball down their throats on that drive.

Im far more concerned with Henning's goalline playcalling and insistency to do a play action pass when everyone with two eyes knows we are not running, also not a fan of his formation selections....empty backfield on 3rd and shorts? Thats one less blocker and one less option we have when we do that BS.

As far as the end and around? Well obviously Bess isnt ideal for this play but maybe thats what Jax was thinking too.
