So my I turned on my comp and had no connection. I can't figure out why its not working. I reset everything and still nothing. I figure its the modem. Take it down and they say it works. Hmmm So than I take off my Router and hook up the the modom directly. Any other way to test my router? I just wanna make sure I can't fix it before I drop more cash on something else

When you bypassed your router were you able to get a good connection? Also what modem and router do you have?

Yeah a good connection. I mean its as fast as it was. Its a net gear router and a Modem from my cable company (Brighthouse). I have had them both working for almost two yrs now.

Sometimes you just have to unplug the power cord to the router for a few minutes and let it reset itself. It's not a very technical answer/fix, but it works.

There is a reset button on the back of the router, you will need a pen to push it because it is recessed.

Hm...it sounds like you are using DSL?

If so, if you have a pcmcia card, try removing it, and restarting your computer, then turn it off, then reinsert.

If you are using a PC, try unplugging the cable from the router, turn your pc off, then back on, then off, reinsert the cable and turn it back on.

Could be your box has "lost' your modum and uninstalling and reinstalling can force your box to look for the connection and reestablish the hardware.

Same thing happened to me, got a signal but could not connect. It ended up being the router.

Is this a wireless router? If so it my just be a weak signal. Pretty sure it's not or its my guess you would have mentioned it already.

When resetting your router be sure to reset your modem first. Leave it unplugged for 30 seconds or so, allowing it to clear its residual memory. Plug it back in and allow it to boot up (all the normal lights lit up and or blinking). After your modem has been reset unplug your router for a couple seconds then plug it back in. Allow it to reconnect then try to connect once again.

If that doesnt work go into your device manager.
Start > right click "My Computer" select "Manage" > Device Manager.

Do you have any Yellow caution flags?

I would try replacing your router first. I just had to do this within the past week, and now my internet connection is as fast as ever.

One other note: if you are running an internet phone service like Vonage with your setup, that can drain your router's connectivity as well.

The router is easier to test. If you bypass your router and you get a good connection it's not your modem. If you bypass your router and get no connection then its your modem. When I say its your router or modem I don't necessarily mean its the hardware as it could just as easily be a software issue or a windows issue in those regards.

And if you got your router from the phone company (Like I did from Verizon when we went fios) they will replace it for free (at least Verizon did)

Glad to hear it. I was pretty sure it wasn't your modem.
