I know we have a GOTY thread, so I figured why not have a Disappointments of the year thread?

-One of my biggest disappointments was the fact that GT5 didn't come out in 2009, and the same could be said about FFXIII (at least stateside).

-Another disappointment has been NSMB. While I expected another 2d platformer, and I expected not a lot of changes from previous iterations, what had me excited was the local multiplayer. And not multiplayer like Mario plays until he dies, then Luigi takes over, but rather multiple players playing the same level at the same time. However, after playing over two worlds I have to say it's incredibly difficult and frustrating to do so. If I'm not waiting on my partner(s) to catch up, or waiting for them to respawn from their death (or vica-versa), then we are all getting in each others way when trying to make jumps that need to be executed with timing and often precision. There is nothing precise about two people trying to jump a pitfall and one bouncing off the others head forcing at least one player to fall to their death.

-Having some of my 360s be banned. :pity: Yea, that's my fault, but it was disappointing nonetheless.

-Halo 3: ODST. Don't get me wrong, I liked the game, I just wanted more.

-Personal disappointment, as I have the following games still in my backlog waiting to be played (perhaps even opened): Dead Space, Bioshock, Valkyria Chronicles, Uncharted 2, the Orange Box, Disgaea 1-3, God of War Collection, Eye of Judgement, Magna Carta 1+2, Xenosaga 2+3, almost every PS2 SMT game from Devil Summoner to Persona 4, Ar Tonelico 2, Wild Arms 3-5, Suikoiden 3+4, Shadow Heart games, Castle of Shikigami III, Fire Emblem (the wii one), Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Little King's Story, Muramasa: the Demon Blade, Phantom Brave: We meet Again, and Shadow of Colossus. :pity: I'm never going to catch up. :pity:

I may add more disappointments, but these jumped out at me right away.

I really have to dig on this one to come up with a game that was a disappointment because it was a great year for games.

However one game I bought this year that I've played and was disappointed in was Modern Warfare 2. Given I need to give it more time to make a final judgment but based off my play so far it is not worth the hype it was given.

Remember vote is due to change so please don't kill me. :pointlol:

My PS3 breaking again as I have Batman, Assassins Creed II, and CODMW2 sitting unplayed tops my list this year.

No game sticks out in particular. My 60GB PS3 breaking was a big disappointment. So much for backwards compatibility.

My biggest disappointment was Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2. I loved the first one, and this one sounded even better, with a storyline based on the Civil War comic book from a few years ago.

I was incredibly disappointed. I thought the choice of certain characters was lacking, and some were completely overpowered. But the area where the game really stunk was in leveling up. Previous games allowed you to pick and choose your powers accordingly, which lent a certain amount of strategy to the game. In this case, Activision stripped everything down so that all you had to do was allow your points to autospend. They also dropped the amount of costumes from 4 to 2 (for no real reason). Overall it was a less immersive experience, and as such I walked away underwhelmed.

Nope, it's still in shrink wrap. It's mocking me along with R&C:aCiT, and GoW:C as they have box art which differs from the rest.

I think it was Bionic Commando for me. So much hype, screenshots, potential, and failure all in one package.

Getting the ban hammer was easily the most disappointing aspect of 2009 for me. :)
For the most part I've enjoyed all the games I've played this year, none have been a chore.

My 360 got the E74 error.

The Wii in general was a dissappointment for me. I sold my Wii in 2009.

Madworld- Looked to be the Wii's first good mature game but wasn't.

Modern Warfare 2 would be the biggest dissapointment for me. So hyped up, yet the gameplay isn't even as good as the previous 2 COD's. NBA 2K10 would also be on the list. I thought there was no way the game could be as horrible online as last year, well I was wrong, it's even worse.

prototype for me. though ultimate alliance 2 was a good choice as well.

odst wasn't a disappointment to me, just Bungies decision to move it from a 40 dollar game to a 60 dollar game. If it was 40, great stuff. 20 dollars more makes it a full release and its not up to snuff for that.

Prototype was indeed disappointing. Forgot about that one since I didn't end up buying it.

I only paid like $30 for ODST, so price wasn't an issue.

Plus the partner AI is godawful.

Alright well it was released here November 2008, but the disappointment stayed with me through the entire year.

Tales Of Symphonia: Dawn Of The New World.

The game is HORRIBLE. The original for gamecube is my favorite game EVER. Beaten it like 11 times and playing it through again now. However this game, as a sequel, disgusts me. I'd love to beat up the people who thought it was a good idea, then beat up their parents for having such uncreative untalented children.

    - Prototype (boring...boring...boring)
    - COD:MW2 (pc gamer, so no control for cheats and hacks does it for me)
    - Operation Flashpoint: DR (again, pc gamer, no dedicated servers, source code, etc)
    - Madden 2010 (I'm finally trying to learn how to be a good player and realized altough there is a lot of strategy involved, there are also many exploits. Plus gameplay is pretty bad. Still like Madden 08 for the PC best.)

Madden 2010 online franchise by far. I had high expectations that they would get past last year's suckfest and add free agency, the draft, coach hiring/firing, and all that jazz... But nope, just the season, draft, repeat. If I remember correctly, there isn't even a salary cap...

Oh and of course, Stitches NEVER plays CoD, he has the game I'm pretty sure, and he's online all the time. That is probably the most disappointing thing of them all.

    Modern Warfare 2.

Mind bendingly bad storyline for a game that should have been easy as **** to write and a huge letdown from MW1 which had one of the best campeigns I have ever played.

Plus the matchmaking lobby system is completely broken, boots people for no reason, and released with glitches that they fixed with patches that contained even more glitches.

Plus I refuse to support a game that asks me to spend half of the time either killing innocents in an airport or US servicemen who are unwittingly supporting a rouge commander. IMO they went for cheap shock value and the direction they went with it genuinely pisses me off. I know Activision loses no sleep over it but I will never support the game.

Making it even worse for me is that over half my online buddies are now playing it almost exclusively.

    Its a video game.

I tried to call as many innocents as I could on that level. Because it is after all a video game.

Forza 3 - never played previous editions and bought into the hype. Great visuals but no sense in speed and it's always a damn red car out front which after two corners is so far behind it's not funny.

I hope your right, I really do....but at this point the COD franchise is such a behemoth that DICE/EA will simply be trying to knock down a brick wall by spitting on it.

The marketing campaign alone for MW2 was unprecedented,

Im not so concerned about how much of a dent they manage to put into MW2, I just want the game to be fun. I did have a good time playing BF1943 on my 360, but to be honest it really pales in comparison to the massive battles to be had in 1942, Vietnam, and of coarse BF2. It was pretty disheartening to hear they will limit the player count in the PC version, I still remember when they were promising 50vs50 in Battlefield 2 all the way up until some months before the release. That kind of game serves itself well with giant battlefronts.

I am a military veteran, and found MW2 to be interesting, fun, and very entertaining. I wasnt the least bit offended that they put me against other soldiers. I actually really dig the plot twist. I have several military and ex military buddies who love it as well. On of by best buds who is a cop in CT and an ex Navy SEAL swears by it. I dunno. I didnt have a problem with it.

Yeah, the larger battles would be nice, but I think with the graphic intense gaming now a days, it is hard to optimize for the time being, such large scale battles, just a theory off the top of my head.

Not to turn this thread off-topic but here is a list of features enhanced for the PC version of BC2. At least EA/Dice acknowledge the PC gaming industry and accommodate their needs instead of porting a console game that just won't please PC gamers.

    PC Enhanced Features
Up to 32 Players on PC (24 on consoles) - Play with up to 32 players online in the biggest multiplayer Maps in Battlefield. Each with a different tactical and gameplay focus set across a variety of environments.
Full DirectX 9, 10 & 11 Support - Immerse yourself in the Battlefield world as Frostbite engine brings tanks, helicopters and explosions to vivid life on your PC. The game will fully support Windows XP, Vista, and 7 with new tech that further improves things like lighting and shadows.
Enhanced Gameplay - The PC version also includes wide peripheral support like Joysticks for flying, NVIDIA 3D Vision, Logitech LCD Keyboards and VoIP Support plus a variety of specific features tailored for PC play.
Friend Support - Find your friends online with the new buddy list to see if and who is online so you can quickly join their game.
Dedicated Ranked Server - Everyone gets non-stop action with no connection penalties based on some other player's internet. Ranked Server Provider program will give players opportunity to rent their own server(s) located in professional grade datacenters, ability to modify settings like map rotation, create reserved slots for friends or clan members, kick & Ban players, and custom name your ranked server.
Clan Support & Private Servers - Independent Clan Tag, and ability to rent servers for hosting and controlling private password protected competitive servers with expanded control over the settings from public ranked servers.
PC Squad Play System - Updated from previous Battlefield PC titles now gives control of your squad before heading into combat.

I was in on the BF:BC2 BETA and it was absolutely amazing. I put in over 25hrs of game play for it alone and you can tell they are going hard for the MW2 crowd. They have killcams and a ranking up system similar to the COD series so that should hook those kinds of players. Luckily the Hardcore mode they are releasing is more my style with more BF 1943 gameplay where the killcam, rank ups, etc. are done away with and skill is how you win instead of ranking up as fast as you can or glitching....basically it gets rid of weak players that cheat, glitch, stat pad, etc.

If the beta was as good as it was the full game will have a great MP mode. I already liked BF more than COD before but this game sealed it for me. Dice is doing things right now where they are COD with destruction and a lot less glitchers to kill the fun. MW2 is great but if gamers pass up BF:BC2 for it they are going to be missing out on one of the best FPS ever.

I'm in the Army, literally everyone in my unit under 40 plays this game and loves it. On a given night you can find like 30 or 40 people in my unit playing it. They can't keep the game in the PX here in Okinawa, between the Army, Navy, Marines and Airforce theres probably 20,000 servicemen playing it here on the island. Haven't heard a single one complain about the storyline or game in general.

I still work with a ton of military people. It's the same here, if you're a male under 40 you've been playing this. I play with some of my military coworkers a lot. The game is not perfect but it's the most fun I've had with a shooter in some time. I'm less than a year removed from being an Army SSG. The game didn't offend me. It's intense but I didn't really have a problem with it. And it gives you the option of skipping the airport level anyway.

Gaming disappointments of 2009? Oh, where to begin?

    1. The Wii in general. Nintendo's biggest announcements were two Mario sequels, another outsourced Metroid game, and the promise of yet another Zelda game in 2010. Meanwhile, it's increasingly looking like people who buy the Wii play with it for about 2 weeks and then never touch it again. This is turning into a major letdown of a console... and I'd like to say I called it back at TGS Fall 2005. Nintendo, if you're going to rehash Mario sequels to death, can we at least get Super Paper Mario 2?

    2. The DS. I bought two games for it the entire year: Dragon Quest V and Super Robot Wars OG Saga Endless Frontier. Not good.

    3. The continued dormancy of franchises I care about. Suikoden VI? Does not exist. Breath of Fire VI? A pipe dream. Wild ARMs VI? Never happening. A brand-new 2D Castlevania game in 1080p on the PS3 and 360? It's less likely than you think.

    4. Reggie Fils-Aime still hates EarthBound/Mother.
    5. The PSP Go.

    6. Left 4 Dead 2. WHY?! Meanwhile, Portal 2 and Half-Life 2 Episode 3 have fallen off the face of the Earth.

But not to be entirely negative, there were some nice things about 2009.

    1. The PS3's gradual rising from its grave. Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2. Uncharted 2. Demon's Souls. BlazBlue. Batman: Arkham Asylum. PS3 Slim. A price cut.

    2. Announcements of 2010 release dates for games like the next console Zelda, Dragon Quest VI, Dragon Quest IX, Final Fantasy XIII, etc.

    3. Duke Nukem Forever died. Maybe.
