I see a lot of people pushing/hoping for a wide receiver with the #1 pick or even trading draft picks for an established wide out.

This defense gave up 390 points this season:cry:
Let me preface this by saying ONLY 1 time in the past 30 years have we allowed more points and that was the 1-15 season...:pity:

How anyone could not prioritize and make defense priority number one is beyond me

Lets go out and load up on this defense in the draft and hopefully turn this "titanic" defense around

Did I say second worse defense in 30 years with points against????

Yeah I think ppl have been yelling for Safety, ILB, and WR so we know we need defense. If Eric Berry is avaliable I am sure he is the pick. Our defense was hit with some injuries and I am sure the front office did not see Wilson and Bell playing that bad with each other. No one is forgetting defense.

No no no see a Wr is a much more valuable position to stock up on...

The D really was putrid, the one saving grace was we did have a ton of Sacks across the defense, not just JT with 12 and some dude with 7.

Our inside back 4 just were awful, Channing, Akin A, Wilson, Bell, add in rookie Cb's and it is not a surprise we gave up 390 points.

The Giants were a team that loaded up on Wide Receiver. now they are in the playoffs and Miami is not.

IMO you draft core positions over non core positions. ILB is not a core position. There is also considerable evidence that the potential impact of drafting an ILB is small. However, S is also traditionally a non core position. There is, however, considerable evidence that Ss do have a substantial impact on winning. IMO they should be considered core positions now.

Personally, I have always favored drafting defensive positions. But more importantly I favor drafting core positions early. So, wanting to draft the position that will have the greatest impact I would favor drafting a S or a WR. Going purely by positional impact, WR would be the smartest choice. But b/c of my defensive leanings I'm torn between S and WR.

Most people are actually clamoring for BPA of the needs. Most folks acknowledge we need D. But if for some reason, McClain, Berry are gone.....it might be to high to take Spikes, and might have to take a Dez Bryant. We are tracking all 3, but we'll probably take BPA of what is available.

The answer is simple mathematics, Miami has not addressed this issue for a long time. We have not had a number receiver in Miami for a very long time. If we continue playing without a guy who is threat to the defense we will right back here next year writing stuff like this. Sure our defense needs help but let's stop the insanity of ignoring this problem because it won't go away on it's own.

Bro I see your point and it is well taken. A great #1 WR can help a defense by keeping the defense off the field more, with the offense on the field. We need to improve on both sides of the ball.:wink2:

If it must be explained, perhaps your reference to "the most points given up since 2007" part of your OP?

That year JT had 10 or 12 sacks, JP had 5 (iirc) this year we had several players with 5 or more sacks, but still gave up 390 points, but the sacks are still far more than we had in the previous worst season, 2007.

    Know what I mean Vern?

If you use a 3-4 defense, LBers and NT are core positions.

With more and more teams going to it, the right players for it are going to be harder and harder to find.

Which would make this a good time to run the 4-3, the patsies have switched to it more or less, and you could run a Hybrid system.

What's crazy is that even with the receivers we have, we should have won at least four more games had our defense played decent. Receiver isn't as big a need as people are making it out to be...Henne had what, three 300 yard games at the end of the season?

Defense definitely needs more help than offense. I think offense is close enough it would be nice to pickup an experienced reciever in FA that we could plug in the #1 spot right away then draft ILB's, FS and NT's we really need to find someone to take Fergusons place our run d was atrocious once he went down.

Unfortunately it's alot easier said than done...if they do manage to plug the holes we should be a really competitive team next year but they have to get a deep threat reciever, your not going to beat alot of the teams that we will face in the playoffs without a legit #1 to help spread the field. I don't care how good your defense is they are going to give up points and your offense has to be able to come in and put points on the board when they do.

This BCS Championship game is a good example of what happens when you have a D but can't/don't pass. Alabama is the superior team. Their defense is incredible and they had this game clearly in hand. But the offense did nothing all second half. They just relied on the run and became predictable. Alabama succeeded in keeping Texas in it. It's 24 - 21 now. I don't know what will happen, although I assume that Bama should still pull it out.

This is what we live with through the Wanny years.

Our offense kept the defense off the field the whole first half of the season. Didn't really help. Should have helped, but didn't. Because our defense was THAT bad.

Good point brother. But hopefully with a true number 1 we can put more points on the board. Very good post bro.

I feel we should upgrade mostly defense. This draft has some good players on defense at positions we need like lb and safety. I too would like a wr so I am torn. Maybe they can go after a free agent receiver, and draft a guy like Eric Berry(please be there at our pick lol).

We weren't nearly as bad in the beginning as we were late. Much of that had to do with injuries, particularly Ferguson and Allen. We did still give up some big plays, but much of that had to do with our ability (or more appropriately inability) to tackle. Had we tackled Dallas Clark or Garcon at least once, I think that outcome is different. Same goes with Shockey and New Orleans. Having those guys back (hopefully resign Ferguson) and learning how to actually tackle, I think our defense is much, much better than it was late in the year.
