Dolphins to interview Steelers' Keith Butler for defensive coordinator job

By Omar Kelly & Mike Berardino

    South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Keith Butler, candidate for the Dolphins defensive coordinator position, has coached a number of standout linebackers

The Miami Dolphins have requested and received permission to talk with Pittsburgh Steelers assistant Keith Butler about the vacant defensive coordinator position, according to a team source.

Butler just finished his seventh season coaching Pittsburgh's linebacker. Before that he coaches the Browns' linebackers from 1999-2002.

During his tenure in Cleveland, Butler coached alongside Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano for two seasons on that Browns staff, where Sparano served as the offense's quality control coach in 1999, and offensive line coach in 2000.

I hope the Big Tuna has the right lure to real this one in call it an experiment but he is groomed to be a very good DC. Super Bowl caliber mind and attitude to drill into our young players.

Make that a heads up play by Sparano

it's like congress, everything behind closed doors
they know what they had to do to upgrade
long before releasing our defensive coordinator
mere posturing, the deed has been set in place
& we will find out about it, after the fact
whoever they select will be a major improvement

No reason you can't have both, draft a young stud and have him learn under Porter until he is ready. Porter could become a coach on the field for Butler.

Much in the same way Nat Jones was for Paul Pasq.

being that most likely next year is an uncapped year, i wouldnt mind him back in a very limited role, but also being that its uncapped, its our chance to get out from the rest of Porters contract for no fee..

how much longer is Porters contract?

    Where is Butler?

No old man Groh Please! Parcells let Sparano hire
the man. Don't go with a buddy. Let's get the younger
guy from the Steelers. He will fix this mess with toughness.

Don't underestimate the value of experience. I'm not saying Groh is better than Butler or anything of the sort, but who do you think has seen more over the years?

lot of truth to that...experience cannot be bought or learned or read in a book. takes time @ task to acquire.

While there is an amount of truth in this, we must consider that we also saw about all we are going to see from Groh. He's been around forver and in that time he has never done anything "special". So while he has seen everything so have we seen everything from him. I or no one knows for sure if Butler will be any good or not. I really like the fact he has spent 7 years learning under if not the best defensive mind in foottball then certainly one of them. It's also very comforting to know that the people in Pittsburgh think so highly of him that they have anointed him the heir apparent to Dick Lebeau. Personally from a defensive side I couldnt think of a better complement for a young defensive mind. :knucks:

Going for Groh over Butler or whomever is like taking the 50 dollars cash instead of seeing what's behind door number 2...sure cash in hand is the safe bet and hard to argue with, but then again you'll always be wandering what could have been. Great success has never come with investing in the known, always the unkown.

The Steelers don't have many free agents this year. Casey Hampton, Ryan Clark, Deshea Townsend, that's about it. Townsend's 34, he doesn't fit the mold of free agents this front office likes to bring in. I'd like to kick Ryan Clark's tires, as we could use the safety help even if only for a couple of years.

What Butler would really bring is scouting experience. He'd help more in terms of ranking linebackers in the draft than anything else.

you want to hire a DC to make draft decisions
    I don't

Moot point now that Butler has turned us down, but Butler has personally scouted some LBs, Sean Witherspoon in particular. And yes, the coordinators do get a say in what sort of players they would prefer, just as the head coach gets a say in what sort of players he would prefer. This does affect the draft board.
