Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports the Pirates have signed Octavio Dotel to a one year deal worth about $3 million along with a club option for 2011.

The 36 year old is the prohibitive favorite to close for the Pirates and should have a fair amount of value as a result. He spent the last two seasons as a setup man for the White Sox, posting respective ERAs of 3.76 and 3.32. Over said two years, his K/9 rate was a strong 10.83 and should have plenty of value in mixed leagues.

Buster Olney of ESPN.com reports that Joel Pineiro will make $16 million over the next two year with the Angels.

The agreement is pending a physical slated to take place Thursday. The 31-year-old saw his career revived in St. Louis behind his sinker and will attempt to replace John Lackey's production in Los Angeles.

If you looked washed up when you left baseball in 2008 and are now trying to make a comeback, the Rockies are your huckleberry:

When asked about how they'd pay these two, Mr. Gustafson announced that there was plenty of money sitting in the team's Lehman Brothers account. Meanwhile, former Rockies outfielder and fellow 2008-idler Preston Wilson sits in a dark room somewhere wondering why he's chopped liver all of a sudden.

Dodgers signed RHP Vicente Padilla to a one-year, $5.025 million contract.

He'll get $1 million of that in a signing bonus and can earn another million with incentives based on innings pitched. Padilla, 32, has a 4.33 ERA over 11 big league seasons and hasn't managed an ERA lower than 4.00 since 2003 with the Phillies, but he should be a decent No. 4 starter with this pretty reasonable commitment. The 32-year-old right-hander was 4-0 with a 3.20 ERA in eight games (seven starts) with the Dodgers down the stretch last season. The signing of Padilla leaves the club with a familiar refrain, as they are now expected to consider internal options to complete their starting rotation during Spring Training.

Phillies signed RHP Joe Blanton to a three-year, $24 million contract extension.

He will earn $7 million in 2010, $8.5 million in 2011 and $8.5 million in 2012, buying out his final year of arbitration and his first two years of free agency. Blanton, who turned 29 last month, has proved himself as a durable middle-of-the-rotation type, logging at least 194 1/3 innings in each of the last five seasons. He was 12-8 with a 4.05 ERA and 1.32 WHIP with the Phillies last season, averaging a career-high 7.15 K/9. It's likely that his 2007 season is an outlier, but he should continue to be a reliable horse through the length of the contract.
    -----------------------------
Craig Calcaterra of NBCSports.com reports that the Phillies and Shane Victorino have reached agreement on a three-year, $22 million extension.

Calcaterra says an official announcement could come as soon as Friday. Victorino, 29, batted .292/.358/.445 with 10 home runs, 62 RBI and 25 stolen bases last season while earning just $3.125 million. The new deal would cover his last two arbitration-eligible seasons and his first year of free agency. It looks like a smart extension for both sides.

Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports reports that the Royals have signed Rick Ankiel to a one-year, $3.25 million contract with a $6 million mutual option for 2011.

It's pretty impressive that agent Scott Boras was able to convince the Royals to add such a high-salary second-year mutual option, whether it's ever exercised or not. Ankiel has provided baseball with a few major storylines over the years, both positive and negative, but he hit just .231 with a .285 on-base percentage last season and has quite a few holes in his swing.

Clearly Dayton Moore doesn't get it. But hey at least the Royals might have a shot at the single season record of hitting into the least amount of double plays and the least amount of runs scored this year! It's just too bad they didn't keep Mike Jacobs to help/hurt the cause.

According to Jon Heyman the Mets have traded for Gary Mathews Jr. from the Angels. No word on who or what is going back to LA. Obviously the Angels are going to pay a lot of the money but still I don't get it, I mean I know the Mets need a CFer for a month until Beltran gets back (if he gets back) but GMJ sucks.

I can only hope for the Mets' sake that the Angels are either throwing in someone useful or else they're eating a bunch of that money (UPDATE: Heyman says they will eat a lot of money).

Either way, this smells like panic over the Carlos Beltran knee thing. Why not sign Johnny Damon? He's not going to cost that much and, unlike Matthews, will actually, you know, hit. Matthews, 35, has hit just .248/.325/.383 since signing a five-year, $50 million contract with the Angels in November of 2006 and had a .697 OPS in 316 at-bats last season. He's also a highly overrated defensive outfielder and is owed $23 million over the next two seasons.

just heard Heyman on WFAN radio, he said Angels eating 20M of the 23M. In that case not so bad.

Also, in a related note and its just speculation but I know the Mets and reds have been tied to trade talks. This would free up the Mets to deal Pagan for a pitcher, probably either arroyo or Harang, preferably arroyo. The reds need a leadoff hitter and a CF so that fits both needs. I know the Mets were trying to get Phillips at one point so that could possibly be expanded.

Because Damon can barely play LF now, let alone trying to play CF in CitiField. He'd be a disaster out there and could turn a routine base hit directly at him into an inside the park HR not to mention his noodle arm and his tag team partner in Jason Bay in LF. And Damon price tag is too high right now and would cost the Mets a lot more than GMJ.

Yeah GMJ is overrated in the OF due to his webgem catches but he's light years better than Damon in the field. He can't hit but I guess you can make the case that neither could/would Angel Pagan (although I'd probably be willing to roll the dice with Pagan) or any of the other options the Mets have right now or on the FA market now. Bottom line if the Mets don't have a healthy Beltran back from June on the Mets are screwed no matter who's replacing him.

The Reds have one of their better prospects in Drew Stubbs as their CFer/lead off hitter now so they don't need Pagan. Although I'm sure if any team is willing to take Harrang or Arroyo's salary off their hands they'd listen for sure.

Yeah I know they have stubbs but Pagan could conceivably give them a stop gap until hes ready. Its been brought up before but since the mets have now added OF depth it would make more sense.

Stubbs is already pencil in as their everyday CFer. He played in pretty much every game since he was called up last year (and did pretty well for himself), I'd say he's ready to take over for them now.

Also word is the Mets are sending a low paid pitcher from their ML roster to LA to complete the trade.

    EDIT: It's Brian Stokes

The pitcher going the other way is probably Brian Stokes according to Crasnick and Heyman's Twitter accounts.

According to Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the Twins have "real interest" in free agent DH Jim Thome.

A Chicago radio station is even reporting that a deal is done. Stay Tuned! Jason Kubel is firmly entrenched at the DH spot in Minnesota and first baseman Justin Morneau isn't going anywhere, but adding a hitter of Thome's capacity certainly wouldn't hurt the club. He hit .249/.366/.481 last season with 23 homers and would serve mostly in a pinch-hitting fashion for the Twins.

Enrique Rojas -- via Jorge Arangure's twitter feed -- reports that the Phillies have signed Jose Contreras to a one year deal.

Contreras has been rumored to be all over the place this winter. Japan? Sure. Rockies? Diamondbacks? Dodgers? Sure, why not. But it's Philly. The Phillies rotation shapes up as Halladay, Hamels, Blanton, Happ and maybe Jamie Moyer. If Moyer either recovers slowly from his post-op infection trouble or if he suddenly realizes that he's 124 years old, Contreras represents a genuine youth movement for the fifth slot. If Moyer comes back and looks like a starter again, maybe Contreras comes out of the pen.

Jason Giambi is expected to sign a one-year deal with the Rockies, reports ESPN's Andrew Marchand.

Giambi batted .292/.452/.583 in 31 plate appearances after joining the Colorado Rockies late last season. He'll serve as a pinch-hitter and backup first baseman. Terms are unknown, but it's likely to be an incentive-laded contract.

Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun reports that the Orioles have agreed to sign infielder Miguel Tejada to a one-year deal.

Terms of the agreement are not yet known, but Tejada will almost certainly be the club's third baseman with Garrett Atkins starting at first and Ty Wigginton assuming a backup role. Tejada could see some time behind shortstop Cesar Izturis, but it would be strictly in an emergency situation. The 35-year-old batted .313/.340/.455 with 46 doubles in 2009 as an Astro.

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports that 41-year-old outfielder Matt Stairs has agreed to a minor league contract with the Padres. From Jerry's Twitter account, a must-follow for any baseball fan:
Stairs will serve as a left-handed pinch-hitter for the Friars this season if he's able to land a roster spot during spring training. He hit just .194/.357/.379 last season in a similar capacity with the Phillies, but he's dropped over 30 pounds this winter and claims to be in the best shape of his life. We shall see.

That's what Nick Carfardo of the Boston Globe is hearing regarding Carl Crawford being dealt before deadline:

This really shouldn't surprise anyone. The 28-year-old Crawford -- who had his $10 million option picked up by the Rays in November -- is on the verge of hitting free agency for the first time. General manager Andrew Friedman has expressed a desire to lock Crawford up with an extension, but knowing that he could receive a contract equal to, if not better than what Chone Figgins and Jason Bay found this winter, it would be a surprise to see him take a discount. The loss of Crawford would be a blow, both for his contributions on offense and defense, but fortunately the Rays have 23-year-old outfielder Desmond Jennings quickly rising through their minor league system. There's many who say he's ready to contribute at a high level in the major leagues right now, so while I wouldn't expect Friedman to operate with any particular timetable in mind, it would be an easier sell to the fan base if they were looking up at the Red Sox and Yankees in July.

There have been rumblings that MLB is concerned about the Rays' finances, and Cafardo says Carlos Pena is in a similar situation. Crawford has one year remaining on his deal and hit .305/.364/.452 with a career-high 60 stolen bases this past season. The 28 year old will command a lucrative contract and is a high probability to depart after the season regardless.

Glad Matthews is gone. They way overpaid for an aging player who had 1 good year. Oh well, costly mistake, but at least I dont have to watch him hit anymore.

Wonder if the Angels will sign an OFer. We're pretty old at that position, so injuries have to be a concern.

Tampa Bay signed Stepan Havlicek over the weekend.

Who is that, you ask? Well, he's a 16-year-old left-hander who pitched for the Czech Republic's junior national team and now he's the first European player ever signed by the Rays. Here's a report on Havlicek from the scout who found him, John Gilmore:
Havlicek is listed by the Rays as 6-foot-1 and 160 pounds, and he's expected to begin his pro career this summer in the MLB-run Australia Academy. If things go well for Havlicek he'll become just the sixth Czech-born player in MLB history and the first since the 1960s, but believe it or not things will need to go really well for him to become the country's best player. Elmer Valo went to high school in Pennsylvania and played most of his 20-year career for the Philadelphia A's, but he was born in Ribnik, Czechoslovakia in 1921 and went on to collect 1,420 hits with a juicy .398 on-base percentage as a big leaguer from 1940-1961.

Mychael Urban of CSNBayArea.com reports that the A's have made a "competitive offer" to free agent right-hander Ben Sheets.

Sheets is reportedly in search of a guaranteed annual salary of $8 million, and probably wants some performance-based incentives as well. The 31-year-old righty missed all of 2009 due to elbow surgery but he impressed scouts and front office members last week with a short throwing session. The Mets, Cubs and Dodgers are also thought to have interest.

A few weeks ago it was reported that the Mets were interested in John Smoltz for the rotation. The interest hasn't flagged, apparently.

As the Daily News says this morning that "the Mets have been particularly active in dialogue" with Smotlz. That's a fancy way of saying they're talking. Smoltz had previously been linked to the Phillies -- who reportedly wanted him to come out of the pen -- and the Nats. Not sure what's taking so long with Smoltz. A guy who went 2-5 with an 8.32 ERA in eight starts in the AL and then 1-3 with a 4.26 ERA in seven starts in the NL shouldn't exactly present a complicated negotiation. "Here's your one-year, $3 million + incentives contract. Take it or leave it." If he comes back with a counter and you really like the cut of his jib, sure you settle at $4 million, which is less than Vicente Padilla will make next year.

Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports reports that outfielder Xavier Nady has agreed to a one-year contract with the Cubs.

Nady will serve as a fourth outfielder in Chicago behind Alfonso Soriano, Marlon Byrd and Kosuke Fukudome. He had a second career Tommy John surgery last season but he's expected to be fine by the start of spring training. The 31-year-old hit .305/.357/.510 with 25 home runs and 97 RBI between the Pirates and Yankees in 2008, his last fully healthy season.

    ------------------

Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that Ben Sheets will receive $10 million plus performance bonuses from the Athletics.

If the Mets had guaranteed him $10 million, everyone would call them desperate, but Billy Beane does it and he keeps his genius hat. It's the way of the world. Sheets, a former first-round pick of the Brewers in 1999, will wear another team's uniform for the first time in his major league career this season. He's scheduled to be introduced at a press conference this afternoon.

MLB.com's Ken Gurnick reports that the Dodgers have come to terms with Ron Belliard on a one-year, $850,000 deal.

Belliard was hot down stretch for L.A. last year, hitting .351/.398/.636 in 24 games and taking Orlando Hudson's job. He started all of the Dodgers' playoff games, reaching base 13 times in 34 plate appearances against the Cardinals and Phillies. Belliard is obviously not going to be a 1.000 OPS player in 2010, but you had to figure that Joe Torre wasn't entirely comfortable with second base coming down to a Jamey Carroll-Blake DeWitt battle. Now he's got options.

Bill Center of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that the Padres have signed Jon Garland.

Team president Tom Garfinkel announced the news on Tuesday, although terms are not yet known. It's somewhat of a surprising destination for the veteran, but not many teams appeared willing to shell out a lucrative contract for a guy who provides 200 middle-of-the-road innings. Garland, 30, was 11-13 with a 4.01 ERA, 1.40 WHIP in 33 starts with the Diamondbacks and Dodgers last season. With an improvement in ERA likely, he could net Jed Hoyer a nice prospect or two at the trade dealine.

Jim Thome has signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Twins, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune's La Velle E. Neal.

Thome can earn an additional $700,000 in incentives. It's a stellar bargain-basement signing by the Twins, who add a still-dangerous bat at a negligible price. Thome, who turns 40 later this season, hit .249/.366/.481 last year with 23 homers. The Twins have Jason Kubel firmly entrenched at DH and Justin Morneau at first base, so finding Thome playing time could be tricky. Adding a hitter of Thome's pedigree at this price was a no-brainer, however, and Ron Gardenhire won't lament the creativity it requires to get the veteran at-bats. Moving Kubel into the outfield in lieu of Delmon Young while giving Thome the majority of DH at-bats against right-handers would give the team it's most dangerous lineup, but it's currently unclear if that will happen.

Dodgers ink Ausmus, so tweets Dylan Hernandez of the L.A. Times. He'll earn a base salary of $850k and there's a mutual option for 2011.

Brad Ausmus actually had a decent year with the stick by his standards in 2009, although it was in exceedingly limited play (.295/.343/.368 in 107 plate appearances). Before that, you're looking at basically a solid decade of awful production, a good year or two back in the late 90s, and then a lot more nothin' before that.

I heard about this on the way home. FoxSports.com reported that Garland will receive $5.3 million for 2010, then $6.75 million or a $600,000 buyout for 2011. I think this insurance if Chris Young is not totally healed up.

The Cubs did a little more work Tuesday toward filling their bench. According to ESPN Chicago's Bruce Levine, the club will announce on Wednesday the signing of infielder Chad Tracy to a minor league contract.

Tracy, 29, batted .237/.306/.389 last season with eight home runs and 39 RBI in 257 at-bats. He's struggled with injuries for the past few years, but it seems like a fine deal considering the money exchanged. Tracy will earn $900,000 if he lands on the big league roster and can gain another $525,000 if he reaches 450 plate appearances. There's also a clause in Tracy's contract that will award him $100,000 for Comeback Player of the Year honors. Wouldn't that be grand.
