NFLN is now replaying the 1972 Super Bowl featuring Dolphins vs the Redskins, set your tivo, dvr, or just flip over to the game on a cool Spring evening.
I am DVRing now. Funniest thing was on the 1st series..the Dolphins went to punt..and when the Dolphin center went to snap the ball to the punter...the tackle for Washington slapped the ball out of his hand and caused a fumble. Initially the refs gave the ball to the Redskins but then changed it over to Miami and gave the Redskins a penalty. I could not believe what I was seeing..lol
Or hearing in my case. The announcers seem to know almost nothing about football. Like that punt. How did they not catch that? It was so Obvious!!!!
Its hilarious...they had no idea what happened and just went on with the game with no explanation...lol
Or what about the second fumble by Jake Scott? It was clearly interference. I can see the Refs missing the call but how can an announce look at that on reply and not say "hey that was interference!". It's almost as if they dont really know the rules lol.
it was 1973 bro. maybe they didnt have a monitor in front of them just a set of eyes in the next box giving them the info via walkie talkie
You would think it might be a possibility BUT, they were clearly talking to the reply as it was being shown. They just didn't seem to understand what they were looking at.
I'll give the Redskins D some credit, those dudes can tackle, 170 pat fisher brought down Larry Csonka...easily..he kinda slung him down.
i hear ya i loved when they said the center just left the ball on the ground it was pretty obvious to me too. the defender just reached over and grabbed the ball makes you wonder how many times the skins used that and didn't get caught.
Yeah but mistakes by the Dolphins are the only thing that kept that game from being a blow out.... It really wasn't that close......I do give the Skins credit tho, they did have some savvy vets
First time I've been able to see one of these Super Bowl games. Really enjoyable. What jumped out at me was Manny Fernandez. The guy was a beast, dominant.
What stood out to me: -Nick Bouniconti could run for an older guy -Vern Den Herder was a College Basketball player -Ed Reed reminded me alot of Jake Scott.
Agreed on Fernandez and Scott. But, the thing that impressed me the most on that fateful day in '73 was how the defense played as a unit. Not to overlook the offense, but that defense was dominant. And, they epitomized the "there's no I in team" attitude. There's a reason why they were called the "No Name Defense." They were selfless, knew their assignments, held themselves accountable, and all they wanted was to win. Yes sir, it was a different game back in the day. Very different. And, in so many ways it was just better IMO. Oh well...nice stroll down memory lane.
One thing that caught my eye was when Csonka had that 50 yard run in the 3rd and we were up 14-0,pounding the ball down their mouth. We get to the 6 yard line and Griese throws that terrible pick in the endzone.WhyTF did he pass and why after all these years, everyone was blaming and yelling at Garo for HIS blunder? That game would have been out of reach early in the 4th if Mr.Bob ArrogantGriese wouldn't have done that in the first place. I still say Earl should have started that game regardless of what the outcome wound up being.
