Before the Giants traded Jeremy Shockey to the New Orleans Saints Monday they discussed trading him to the Miami Dolphins for defensive end Jason Taylor.
According to a source familiar with the discussions, the Giants and Dolphins discussed a Shockey-for-Taylor swap within the last week, but "the talks never got very far," a source said. Taylor, of course, ended up getting shipped to the Washington Redskins instead for a second-round pick in 2009 and a sixth-round pick in 2010.
Taylor, a six-time Pro Bowler and the NFL Defensive Player of the Year just two years ago, would've been an ideal replacement for the recently retired Michael Strahan. Taylor had 11 sacks last season at age 33, and his presence would've allowed Justin Tuck to remain in his role as the third defensive end, which he thrived in last season when he had 10 sacks.
The Saints and the Dolphins were the only serious suitors for Shockey once the Giants reluctantly decided to trade him. The decision apparently was made soon after the team's mini-camp in June, when the disgruntled tight end refused to participate and ended up in a shouting match with GM Jerry Reese. He also renewed his request to be traded, which he initially made back in March.
Shockey was traded to the Saints for a second- and fifth-round pick in next year's draft.
