Yeah I know...Francoeur slumped hard though the last year and a half in ATL and it dragged his numbers down quite a bit. He will never have a great OPS but he should be a reliable 25/100 guy especially once Beltran and Reyes get back. Still, hes not long for the Mets imo...King Fernando will be manning RF soon enough...either Frenchy or Beltran is probably getting moved at some point for a SP this season if they really think hes ready.

If Francoeur keeps this up and becomes a solid player there's no way the Mets get rid of him. He's too much of a positive influence in the clubhouse and for the team. All the players and coaches rave about the leadership and good vibes he brings to the team.

IMO if Frenchy does pan out they could move Fernando to CF and let Beltran walk.

Yes, but Lee needs at least THREE days rest where Halladay can go pitch three times in a seven games series if needed. That's why the Yanks had the edge on us in being able to go with CC an extra game (should it have gone to seven games). Losing Lee hurt but I think we are slightly better off and we did not mortage the team and totally deplete our farm. We can always bring Lee back next year.

Hey Boik we stole Nelson Figeuroa from you guys. :tongue2:

John Maine just simply sucks right now and has for some time, the only reason is has put up decent stats is the fact half the games he pitches are in a pitchers ballpark, otherwise he is a huge liability for us and the fact he is our #2 pitcher speaks volumes on the problems of our starters and the fact Omar has done NOTHING to rectify this outside signing Santana.

Okay, look. After the 7th and 8th innings of this game, you guys have lost the right to complain about your pitching for the rest of the season.

What a meltdown, seven walks and a balk in three innings, even so the Mets TV guys didn't think it was a balk.

You can make whatever justification you want for the Halladay trade but the bottom line is even Jimmy Rollins knows you should have kept Lee. Hes younger, hes just as good during the regular season the last two years and he was lights out in the postseason.

RE: Figueroa...check the boxscore from last night :pointlol:
Maine's problem is the same problem its always been; he has no out pitch so it makes things twice as hard on him. A power pitcher with no out pitch is like a power offense in football with no good running backs. He's got the first two pitches paving the way but nothing to complete the sequence. Ideally hes best slotted for a #5 spot until he gets an out pitch. Im still not ready to give up on him though because he is effective in spite of that. He just walks too many batters as a result and thats what gets him in trouble.

I think the major issue is that the Phillies didn't keep BOTH Halladay and Lee. They claim it was a money issue but if it really was that they could have traded Blanton somewhere. They also claimed that they wanted to restock their farm system but I thought that was faulty logic for a few reasons. First reason is who they got back from Seattle, Aumont isn't that good of a prospect and scouts aren't sure if he's a starter or reliever. Second let's say the Phillies fall out of the race, come July they could either trade Lee for a possibly a better group of prospects than what they got back from Seattle or they could just take the 2 draft picks they would have gotten back for Lee in the offseason.

Personally I would have hung on to both guys and put out a rotation of Halladay, Lee and Hamels and go all in for 2010. Then if they didn't have the budget or couldn't out bid for Lee, then take the picks.

I don't know if anyone is watching this Mets Nats game, but I'm watching it on MASN and I just have to say, these have to be some of the worst announcers in the country. I know lots of announcers can be fanboys, but every time the Nats pitcher throws and they call a ball, the guys keeps yelling and screaming that they are the worst Umps in the game.

Just had to rant a little bit, and this is the only place I could think to go.

I know it is still very early but I think this year's Phillies' team may be the best in Philly's history. Every guy in the lineup can hit. The Phillies are scoring over 8 runs a game and haven't yet played a home game at the CBP. The biggest difference has been Polanco who is making Pedro Feliz look like a Little Leaguer. If the Phillies just get decent pitching they should win most of their games by outscoring their opponents.

There really was no way to keep Lee and Halladay....the Phillies simply don't have the Yankees payroll even had they moved some other players. I would probably have been more willing to move Hamels then Blanton. Moyer and Ibanez are still on the roster and have big contracts. I think the bigger question will be whether the Phils can keep both Werth and Howard. Lee is injured once again so whatever he may have done for 2010 is kind of a moot point, but I like the Phils chances once again. Looking forward to the Red Sox visiting Philly during the 3rd week of May.

    Tough outing for Santana.

Good news though, Jeff Francoeur is on fire! One week into the season and he already has 2 HR's, 6 RBI's, 3 doubles, a triple, and...4 WALKS. He's clearly much more patient and has dramatically improved his pitch recognition. Still early, but certainly good signs.

That's pretty good. The problem was always whether he could do that consistently. It's not like he's never had significant times where he had a clue at the plate. We will see. How about Atlanta's new right fielder?

Looks like we might have found our #2 starter today and a good one too in Pelfrey, what an outing today - 7 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 6 K.

Hopefully Perez can follow suit tomorrow but I am not going to hold my breath.

    Mike Jacobs has been DFA'd.
According to Kevin Burkhardt on Twitter Ike Davis is getting the call up tonight! Finally :)

    Next steps:
    1) DFA Gary Matthews Jr and call up Fernando Martinez
    2) DFA Luis Castillo and call up Ruben Tejada
    3) Send down Jenry Meija to get stretched out to be a starter again
    4) Maine to bullpen, call up Pat Misch since he wasnt bad last year. At least until Meija is ready.

Those moves would make a lot of sense and I'd be all for it but I'd only call up Martinez if he was going to play everyday. If not than no.

Anything that gets Matthews off the roster is a win. But even if Martinez was time-sharing a bit with Angel Pagan thats still > Matthews and Pagan

Nah if he's going to be splitting time with Pagan I wouldn't even bother calling him up. It would hurt his development. He's still so young, he needs to be playing everyday.

If you make it where Martinez would play vs RHP and Pagan vs LHP and Martinez is getting the majority of the time that makes sense to me.

    We just did.

No I HATE that idea, then you run the risk of turning Martinez into a platoon player. He needs his ABs against both RHP and LHP, especially since he hasn't played a full season in the minors due to injuries he probably haven't faced a lot of LHPs to begin with. Who knows maybe the guy will end up not being able to hit LHP but you want to give him the opportunity to fail instead of just taking it away from him right off the bat (that's what happened with Trot Nixon back in the day).

Hardly. Cox nearly blew a playoff series for them and had an infinitely more talented team to work with many of those years.

Ike got his first hit...a soft liner off the end of the bat vs Randy Wells in the 2nd inning. battled back nicely after being down 0-2 and dumped a 2-2 pitch in to right. Very Olerud-esque

I have always felt Niese could be a very good pitcher. hes a lefty with a plus fastball and good control. He had a bad outing last time out in Colorado giving up 5ER in 5IP but generally speaking he should finish the year with a 4ish era in my opinion

    Ike's mets: 2-0
    0-3 tonight.

Pelfrey's scoreless inning streak is at 19. He becomes the first mlb pitcher ever to get three wins and a save in his first four appearances. That splitter is working for him and he's been pounding the strike zone.

Jose Reyes finally looked like himself with four hits and his first triple since April of 09.

    Tatis hit a PH homer.

Bay and Wright were combined 0-6. Both are hitting under 240 and clearly pressing. Bay is always streaky though. wright concerns me more.

Beltran was not cleared to resume baseball activities today. It was supposed to be a routine visit but he is more then a week behind in his rehabilitation. I can't wait til he gets back, plays a few games and can be traded. I can't stand players that take forever to heal and are always hurt.

It should be easy to close out the Braves. Just pitch around Martin Prado and Jason Heyward and watch the rest of them flail around at the plate and strand baserunners all game long. That with one of Yunel Escobar's trademark little league baserunning errors should do the trick. I'm sure Chipper will be out so no worries there.
