Dawson, Blyleven joined by newcomers Alomar, McGriff

The 2010 Hall of Fame ballot, formally released on Friday, is one of the most fascinating in years, an eclectic mix of long-detained deserving candidates and newcomers of both obvious and debatable merit.

The ballot is headlined by Dawson, the outfielder who drove in nearly 1,600 runs across a 21-year career, and Bert Blyleven, the right-hander with the wicked curveball and 287 wins. The two contemporaries are the only ones among 11 incumbent candidates to receive more than 50 percent of the votes a year ago, with Dawson scoring 67 percent in his eighth year of eligibility and Blyleven 62.7 percent in his 12th year.

A candidate must receive 75 percent of the vote from BBWAA members to gain election, with leadoff great Rickey Henderson and former Red Sox slugger Jim Rice reaching that threshold to gain entrance in 2009.

The 2010 ballot also heralds the arrival of 19 new eligibles -- veterans of 10-plus seasons retired for five years -- of whom Edgar Martinez is the most intriguing contender. Originally a third baseman, he was a designated hitter in 1,412 of his 2,055 career games, making him the first primary DH up for Hall of Fame consideration, and hence a test case. Martinez, however, isn't an ordinary trailblazer. The award annually given to the game's top DH bears his name, after all. Weighing in a few years ago, Commissioner Bud Selig called Martinez "the greatest DH since the rule was put in [in 1973]."

The other ballot newcomers comprise an in-crowd of infielders. In an oddity, 10 of the 12 position players were infielders, the exceptions being outfielders Ellis Burks and Ray Lankford.

Going around the horn, the marquee includes third baseman Ventura (294 homers and 1,182 RBIs in 16 seasons, six Gold Gloves), shortstop Larkin (.295 hitter with 2,340 hits in 19 seasons, a 12-time All-Star), second baseman Alomar (10 Gold Gloves, a 12-time All-Star, 474 steals and 1,134 RBIs in 17 seasons) and first baseman Erik Karros (1,027 RBIs in 14 seasons).

Former first basemen also include McGriff, who fell short of his 500-homer goal but had 1,550 RBIs to accompany 493 homers across 19 seasons, and Galarraga, who hit 399 homers in a 19-year career that saw him hit .300-plus eight times. Other position players appearing on the ballot for the first time are David Segui and Todd Zeile. Among the modest sextet of pitchers, the biggest winner was Kevin Appier, who won 169 games across a 16-year career he finished with a 3.74 ERA. Right-hander Pat Hentgen won 131 games and the 1996 American League Cy Young Award. Mike Jackson, who had 142 saves and a 3.42 ERA in 17 seasons, is the bullpen fraternity's nominee. The other pitcher is Shane Reynolds.

The ballot rookies need to attract a minimum of 5 percent of the votes to remain on the ballot in 2011.

Dawson and Blyleven have already spent many years in that netherworld between 5 percent and 75 percent, as have the other returning candidates: Lee Smith (44.5 percent of the vote in 2009), Jack Morris (44), Tim Raines (22.6), Mark McGwire (21.9), Alan Trammell (17.4), Dave Parker (15), Don Mattingly (11.9), Dale Murphy (11.5) and Harold Baines (5.9).

The climb up the totem pole can be slow and gradual. Results of the election will be announced on Wednesday, Jan. 6. Induction of the Hall of Fame's Class of 2010 will be on July 25, in Cooperstown.

Raines, Alomar, Martinez and probably Larkin deserve to get in. If I were to guess on Alomar makes it though.

I am a huge Karros fan, so I would love to see him in, but it won't happen. Dawson, Larkin (without a doubt), Alomar, and Edgar Martinez deserve to be in. I almost think Fred McGriff deserves it as well, but he won't make it. And Don Mattingly too.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Whitey Herzog and Doug Harvey, contemporaries on opposite sides of baseball's battle line, will soon be united in baseball's shrine.
But the Hall of Fame reunion of two other baseball adversaries, former commissioner Bowie Kuhn and former players union boss Marvin Miller, will have to wait. Herzog, whose 18-year managerial career produced 1,281 wins and postseason appearances by six of his clubs, and Harvey, who called 4,670 games during a 31-year career as a National League umpire, were the Veterans Committee's choices for induction into the Hall of Fame.

Hall picks Expos; Dawson preferred Cubs
Hawk to join Carter as second from Montreal enshrined in Hall

Andre Dawson will enter the Hall of Fame as a member of the Expos, as the image on his plaque will feature him wearing a Montreal cap, the Cooperstown museum announced on Wednesday.

But Dawson, who won the National League Rookie of the Year Award in 1977 with the Expos and the NL Most Valuable Player Award with the Cubs in 1987, told a Chicago radio station that a Cubs cap was his preference and that he was "disappointed" that he wasn't given more input in the decision.

Dawson told WMVP-AM, the ESPN Radio affiliate in Chicago, that he wanted an opportunity to tell Hall of Fame officials "what really catapulted me to Hall of Fame status and pretty much what my preference was but I think their decision had been made. It was a little gut-wrenching for me to hear that but it's their decision.

"I'm disappointed. I can proudly say that because Chicago was my preference."

Wow, very surprised for this to be outside his control or at least not allow for his input, discussion, etc.

Weird...he did play more games for Expo's then Cubs' but still.....strange. The plaques of Dawson, manager Whitey Herzog and umpire Doug Harvey will be unveiled as part of the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on July 25 in Cooperstown.

Fred McGriff will be eligible for the Hall of Fame next year, and the folks in Tampa (his home town, and where he currently works) are already banging the drum for his induction.

His basic numbers are pretty good -- 493 homers, 1,550 RBIs, a .284 average. Further research by Rays VP Rick Vaughn makes them look even better, noting that all eligible players with similar triple crown category numbers are in and that McGriff compares very favorably with other first baseman in the Hall, as well as those in his era.

As good as McGriff was -- and he was very, very good -- the mention of his name has never sparked the imagination of casual baseball fans. As a player, he was quiet and classy. He didn't court trouble or attention. He didn't win any MVP awards. He just smashed 30-35 home runs and drove in 100 runs every year for 19 seasons.

Over a 15-year stretch from 1988-2002, McGriff was sixth in home runs, trailing Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Rafael Palmeiro and Ken Griffey Jr. Over the same stretch, only Bonds and Palmeiro drove in more runs.

And one more thing: Of the players mentioned above, only Griffey and McGriff have never been connected to steroids.

Whatever you think of juicing, it has become quite clear that Hall of Fame voters do care, and are prepared to punish anyone connected to steroids or suspected of using them. Just ask Mark McGwire.

So in contrast, will voters reward McGriff for a resume that is perceived to be clean? The Crime Dog tells the New York Times that he's not sure it should matter:

"I think even without those guys being accused of this and that, my numbers stack up pretty good against those guys," McGriff said. "It's not like they were that much better. If you really start to look at the numbers, I was still right there."
