Hi Guys/Gals
Just wondering whether I'm the only one who thinks next years roster looks this way:
1) HENNE
2a) PENNINGTON
2b) THIGPEN
WHITE needs to develop his WR/PR/KR skills ASAP IMO. I've always liked WHITE (except when he was drafted) BUT, he looked like a fish out of water (pun intended).
I would also "hope" that THIGPEN could become the legit #2 behind HENNE. I like PENNINGTON more as an insurance policy QB/QB Coach @ this late stage of his career.
Or...we could use our #2 pick on a QB? lol

I don't for the life of me understand why people were shocked or are comfortable drawing the conclusions they are regarding White. No one would dream of judging a conventional quarterback by the standards applied to White, but somehow a player who is even more raw has higher demands placed on them?

I think Penny is gone.
He deserves the opprotunity to go somewhere to compete for a starting job.
I personally hope he finds his way to the Cards/Vikings and into a Superbowl Championship. The guy deserves it.Tone_E likes this. -

obviously.... -
Its still ridiculous. You draft a Qb number one overall and he still might sit on the bench the entire year. The draft pick doesn't even enter into it.

If not, we need to draft a 3rd QB in a later round and move White to WR. Then White can come in and try to play QB whenever we are nuts enough to try it.
But I'd like a real QB competition this year with another possible NFL QB in camp. If Pat White can beat Thigpen, Pennington or a 5th-6th round draft pick out as a NFL passing QB then so be it. Otherwise, he needs to get with the program. -

Being from upstate NY, I've watched a lot of Big East games & my thought regarding the drafting of WHITE was 'GREAT' (just not at that #2). I'm still hoping for the best buuuttttt...? The kid does have a lot of 'moxie' though, so I 'm still keeping my fingers crossed. -
Still think he has value as a backup/QB coach in the waiting.finyank13 likes this. -
You pointed out what worries me most; and that's if HENNE gets hurt then it's THIGPEN time. That's OK but IF THIGPEN gets hurt we're in SERIOUS trouble. -
If the kid has the moxie I believe him to have, he should have no problem coming in here in training camp & showing he belongs AS AN NFL QB. If not, he better start studing film of RANDAL EL or BRAD SMITH or some other college QB turned WR. -
I really, really do not understand you people sometimes. For the past decade we have gone through starting QBs like toilet paper. And now, now that we FINALLY have a young QB with potential to be a franchise QB for us, you want to draft another QB, or bring one in through free agency or start Chad Pennington again next year and ****** Henne's growth. I'm not trying to say that my opinions are necessarily better than any one else's but I have to question the wisdom, or lack thereof, behind some of the posts that have been made about this subject.

You guys are giving up on Pat White for no reason at all. It was his first year, he never played in a conventional offense, and we never used him in a conventional offense either. For those of you who think Thigpen is a better option i have to ask why?
I can't believe the love that Thigpen gets when all he did was go in and lose a game that our defense gave every opportunity to win. The guy played one game for us and threw 2 ints.
Right now Pat White is only guilty of getting hurt. Thigpen's managed to show us in one game that he doesn't know how to win.finfansince72 and Trowa like this. -
I'm actually kind of annoyed Sparano didn't just say "Henne is my QB" -
I like Henne a lot. I think he should start in 2010 and hopefully beyond.
But say Chad P comes back...and beats him in training camp (which hopefully with Henne's growth in 2009 won't happen) do we go with the guy who gives us the best chance to win? You know how Parcells loves veteran QBs. He stuck with Bledsoe who was playing much worse than Pennington was before he got injured. I dunno something about runner up to MVP in 2008 (not that damn long ago) just has me thinking twice sometimes.Ultra likes this. -
The draft pick is a sunk cost. We can't get it back. The goal now is to produce the best player possible with the guy we used the pick on. That takes time, especially for quarterbacks. -
-
Unless Chad Pennington really likes the scenery in Miami, he will search for a starting QB job elsewhere. There are multiple teams that could use a veteran QB like Pennington. I could see a team taking the same approach we did, drafting a young QB and bringing in Pennington to bridge the gap.

No one here was ever holding White to any expectations of a conventional rookie QB at all so that argument is irrelevent IMO.
Pat White was drafted to fill an uncomplicated role.
Do what he does best. Run.
He only needed to make one pass read and if it's not there run.
As you said he's raw as raw can be so there weren't any expectations but basic ones and he was ineffective at even that. It's not like people here are talking about a true QB rookie that is expected to drop back and learn complicated reads.
Secondly, it's the fact that, just like you said, "he is even more raw" than the usual QB prospect, that draws such fire to the pick. Taking such a raw player without a true position with such a high pick IS the entire problem for most.
I think Thigpen will be our #2 and it won't even be close.finyank13 likes this. -

Secondly, the running thing is an even more terrible tree to be barking up. It's an even more ridiculous double standard applied to White. You'd never give a rookie running back a carry or two and judge them based on that. -

I think its going to be Henne, White and Thigpen with Thigpen and White being in a contest for the backup. I don't think the front office thinks like Fans do, they obviously see something in White and what he can do for the team. IF they decide to permanently move him to a WR/Wildcat role then I think its Henne, Thigpen and a cheap vet/possible late round pick. I don't see Pennington coming back here.

I don't think Pennington will come back (although it would be nice to have him as a backup).
You can't bench Henne anymore. He's the future, so the offense has to be build around him. That's the logical move IMO. The backups will be White and Thigpen, I guess. -

the best of possibilities
1) HENNE
2a) PENNINGTON
2b) THIGPEN -
I don't think he will ever be a traditional qb, a qb in a spread offense of some type, for change of pace perhaps? He'll be a guy like Jensen was only without the physical aspect, "more finese". -
White threw 5 passes this season, and IIRC not one of those passes came within 5 yards of his receiver.
The people defending him sound like the same people that begged to give Beck more time and he will succeed. It wasn't hard to see that Beck was a boy amongst men out there. And now 3 years later, he's still a 3rd string QB. I have hardly any doubt that Pat White will follow a similar path if he's kept at QB -
