I don't think it makes much sense making a new thread for every single bit of news, so how about we just amalgamate everything into this one? Maye a mod can make it the "Official" thread. I'm big on Manning coming to Miami but I believe it was Schefter who said Fisher to the Phins was a done deal.
Scheftner isn't really saying anything that many of us have been saying for awhile. The Colts will cut him and he will chose where he goes. 1. He is going to have at least 10 teams he can chose from. 2. He top priority is going to be another SB ring 3. He will want to work with an organization he likes 4. Money of course is always a factor 5. The community he relocates too will have some influence IMO thats the 5 factors and in that order (IMO) will be what he uses to form his decision. Given that criteria I think Miami is a very viable consideration for him depending on his impression of how he will be treated by the Dolphins organization. Overall our team is one of most complete ones looking for a QB. I'm not going to predict he lands here but it certainly isn't rocket science to say that we are a top consideration for Peyton.
I didn't post that to infer that because Adam Schefter said he thinks it, it will be so. I posted it because I found it mildly interesting that someone in the national media believes Miami to be the most likely landing spot. He's just speculating the same as all of us. That's why I didn't make a whole new thread for it, it's not really all that newsworthy just interesting.
Just like every other Dolphin fan, I would love to see a HEALTHY Peyton Manning in a Dolphins uniform next season. Unfortunately I just don't see it happening. I think it is far more likely that he will end up with the Jets or the 49er's. Like it or not, these two teams are closer to winning a Super Bowl right now than the Dolphins are. My best bet is that if the 49er's are interested in Manning, that is where he will end up playing next year. With a HEALTHY Manning as their staring QB next season, the 49er's would be the favorite to win the NFC title next year. If it is Manning's goal to win another Super Bowl before he retires and he is a free agent, signing with the 49er's and Jim Harbaugh is a no brainer. I can also imagine the possibility of the Jets trying to make a deal with the Colts and trading for him in an attempt to keep Manning from entering free agency. I don't think the Jets owner would have any problem with paying the huge signing bonus Manning is due in March and the Jets could always agree to give the Colts their first round draft pick. The pressure is on the Jets now more than ever, because the Giants won the Super Bowl. If Manning plays next year for a team other then the Colts, and it isn't for either the 49er's or Jets, I will be completely surprised.
The 49ers aren't even on the board at betting sites that are giving odds as to where Peyton will end up. That should tell you something. I don't think the Jets throw in the towel on Mark Sanchez yet. Maybe after next season. Besides, why would he want to get involved with that mess?
The 49's have said they like Smith and are sticking with him but you never know. If they throw thier hat in the ring I agree they are a better prospect for him to go. I agree the Jets are also going to be a top consideration for him. Again I think it will boil down to who he would prefer to work with Philbin or Ryan. If thats 6 of 1 and half-dozen of the other then I think it becomes a question of if he thinks sharing the market notarity with his little brother. That could go either way depending on his perspective. I in no way said Miami was his only consideration but logic tells me we r one of his better options compritivly speaking to whats out there. JMO
Why would the miners, after going to NFC champ want to grab Peyton? No chance there... As for new York I don't think Peyton would want to roll the dice in that market and I sure as hell don't think they are done with Sanchez they aren't gonna make their fourth overall pick sit behind manning after starting for three years... Kansas city, and Seattle and wash come to mind
I realize that the 49er's have stated that they are going to stick with Smith, but really, if you are Jim Harbaugh and you had a choice between Smith and Manning, who are you going to pick? I think that if Manning is healthy enough to play next season and he becomes a free agent, I certainly wouldn't count out the 49er's as a team which would be interested in him for next year. The fact that the 49er's aren't even on the boards of some betting sites is totally irrelevant to me. These same boards had the Giants as underdogs to the Packers, 49er's, and Patriots. How did that work out for betting sites? As far as the Jets and Mark Sanchez is concerned. If you don't think that the owner of the Jets wants a healthy Peyton Manning as the starting QB of his team next year, you just don't understand the pressure his Jets are under after the Giants just won another Super Bowl. The reality is that the Jets were in the AFC championship game in 2009 and 2010. This past season they saw that Sanchez just isn't getting any better. Pressure is now on Ryan to win it all and I doubt that he seriously thinks Sanchez is the QB to win it all. Peyton Manning might not have any interest in joining the Jets, but I think he certainly wants to go to a team with a chance of winning a Super Bowl within the next year or two. In looking at the record of the Dolphins over the last three years, I really don't see why he would be interested in the Dolphins if it is all about winning another Super bowl for him. You have a first time head coach and a coaching staff with a lot of college coaches coming into the NFL for their first time. I just don't see this as a selling point in the Dolphins attempt in signing Manning. Unless Philbin is sold on Flynn as the long term answer at the QB position for the Dolphins. I think that the Dolphins will end up selecting a second tier college QB in the second or third round and hope that he will be ready to become the starter in 2013. I also think that Matt Moore will be the starter next season, if Flynn is not signed. I suspect the Dolphins will again finish at 7-9 or possibly 8-8 if Moore ends up being the starter for the Dolphins next season.
You could argue the Dolphins are a better team than the Jets right now. They certainly played like it the last half of the season. Peyton doesn't strike me as the type of guy that would enjoy having Rex Ryan as coach however. The Dolphins had the #6 defense in the NFL last year. They gave up less than 20 PPG. Special Teams were excellent. They are literally a QB away from being a Super Bowl contender.
You can't make trades until the league year officially begins March 13th. Therefore, unless Manning relents, they would have to pay him his bonus before that. If he's traded, the Colts would have to absorb a huge cap hit, which they're not going to do. The contract also cannot be renegotiated before July, so even if he did push back the bonus the Jets would have to put that salary against the cap, which causes further issues as the Jets are also expected to be over the projected salary cap as it is. They would have to clear a lot of room to fit him in, which wouldn't be easy and may wind up weakening them in other areas. I also don't think Peyton wants to take the spotlight away from Eli in the same city.
I know it seems like I don't want Manning here but that is the furthest thing the truth. I would love to see a healthy Manning on the Dolphins. I guess I just don't have any faith in Ross being able to close the deal. He couldn't close it with Harbaugh or Fisher and I personally think that Manning will end up going somewhere else if he is healthy and is a free agent. I will admit that a lot of this thinking has to do with my lack of faith in Ross and Ireland. I am waiting for them to give me something to believe in when it comes to their ability to put a winning product on the field. Signing Manning, if he is healthy would certainly go a long way toward changing my attitude about these two men, but right now I remain skeptical that these two men can do what is necessary to bring a true franchise QB to the Dolphins. As far as the Dolphins having a top 10 defense. I certainly agree that they were a good defense under one of the top DC's in the NFL. Unfortunately Nolan is now the DC of the Falcon's and the DC for the Dolphins next season is the former defensive backs coach of the Bengals, who has never before been a DC in the NFL. I think the loss of Nolan is going to be a big negative for the defense and I will be very surprised if the Dolphins are a top 10 defense next season. Taylor retired, Wake will be a year older, Soliai and or Langford may be gone in free agency. The safety positions remain a weakness and Vontae Davis is the only quality CB on the team. It would not surprise me in the least if the Dolphins defense drops to the middle or even lower in the rankings next season. I think assuming this defense will continue to play at a high level under a different DC is a rather risky assumption. It should also be noted that this same top ten defense did not play well against the better teams on their schedule this past season. Most of their stats were put up against teams which were not very good and the Dolphins played one of the easiest schedules in the entire NFL and still finished 6-10.
IMO there is less than a 5 percent chance that Manning is healthy and starts the season for Miami. I would say there's a better chance that Irsay and Manning make up. We'll have a better idea after those two meet this week. I would also say that there is a very strong chance that if Manning does return it will be with inconsistent strength in his hand and arm so 85 percent doesn't mean what people think it does. The Marino that was a 69 rated QB was probably an 85 percent version of the old Marino. He was probably 85 percent some of the time and 50 percent or less the rest of he time.
the dolphins are a franchise caliber qb away from contending for a superbowl. in the last few years we have beaten green bay in green bay, should have beaten pitt until we got screwed by the refs and had leads against the saints, giants, patriots.
Great points PhinGeneral. You sound like you know what you're talking about re; all the cap stuff. And, it makes sense re; Eli. I think the most likely landing spot for Peyton is either Arizona, Washington or Miami. Of the three, I think Miami has the most to offer, but obviously I am biased. I'm also all for it, assuming of course he passes a physical, and his contract is cap friendly/incentive laden. Only time will tell.
Most every team in the NFL would be a real Super bowl contender next year if they had a franchise caliber QB on their team. All you have to do is look at the Colts to see how much impact a true franchise QB makes on an NFL roster. The Colts went from a preseason favorite to go to to the Super Bowl to the worst team in the entire NFL when they lost their franchise QB for the season. Unfortunately the only franchise QB who may be on the market this year is Manning, and that is only if he is actually released by the Colts and is 100% healthy. Luck and RG3 may be future franchise type QB's but the Dolphins don't appear to have the draft picks available to make a move up to get either of these QB's. Flynn is still a huge question mark and even if the Dolphins decide to sign him, there is no way of knowing if he will be a future star or a future bust. He certainly can not be considered a franchise QB at this stage of his career. I also don't see any QB's taken after Luck and RG3,in the draft who will be future franchise type QB's in the NFL. So basically if the Dolphins are unable to entice a healthy Peyton Manning for next year. The reality is that the Dolphins will be stuck with the same mediocre quarterbacking next year that they have had for the past decade. Without a franchise QB, the Dolphins will continue to play at the level they have for the past three years and I suspect that they will be looking at another 7-9 or possibly 8-8 season next year. If Manning does come and he is healthy, I could certainly see the Dolphins contending in the AFC. Without him, I just don't see a big improvement in the team next year.
