Just felt like, since the preseason games have now started, this would be a great place for us to spotlight some guys we think are performing well on other teams that MAY get cut despite performing well, that might be a good idea to put a claim on. Let me start us off. LT Matt Tobin, Philadelphia Tobin played at Iowa under Kirk Ferentz and obviously there are a lot of Iowa connections on this staff between Joe Philbin and Ken O'Keefe. Coming out of Iowa he was another one of those guys that fits the mold of the really mobile offensive lineman, like Jeff Adams and Will Yeatman. He measured 6'6" and 303 lbs, and ran a 4.90 which is flying at that size. He started 10 games at left guard under Ken O'Keefe in 2011. He started all 12 games for Iowa in 2012, some of them at left guard and some at left tackle. He has been a surprise player in Eagles camp. When Jason Peters nicked up his ankle a few weeks ago, it was Tobin and not Dennis Kelly (who started 10 games last year) who replaced him on the 1st string. In the preseason game, Allen Barbre started the game at left tackle, but Matt Tobin came on the field with the 2nd string and played 49 snaps. He stood out. He played very well. Pro Football Focus even gave him a real high grade. Would the Eagles release him? It's a good question, and I think it's possible even though he's been impressive. They have a real logjam going on at tackle. They just drafted Lane Johnson but they're still committed to trying to make things work at least one more year with Jason Peters. Todd Herremans played right tackle last year and played it really well. Dennis Kelly started 7 games at right tackle and played less well than Herremans but he still started. Allen Barbre became their 1st string left tackle for the preseason game when Jason Peters had to sit out. They've also got Ed Wang and he's a pretty significant player trying to win a spot. And let's not forget that the Eagles were the team that won the "sweepstakes" for the only player that would have been draftable in this year's Supplemental Draft, except it turned out he wasn't eligible for it and was allowed to let teams get into a bidding war for him as a UDFA. That would be Michael Bamiro. This is a damn crowded position and it's exactly the kind of situation you want to keep an eye on because you have a mix of money guys that the front office and coaches might feel beholden to, versus unheralded guys that are performing. I think the Eagles may make some mistakes in the front office with the 1 thru 30 positions on the roster sometimes, but I think that front office does a really good job filling up the 30 thru 60 positions on the training camp roster. This is a few years now I keep feeling like they're going to toss off someone that is at the low end of their 53 man roster that could actually make an impact elsewhere. Dion Lewis I think is going to be an example of that. Matt Tobin? Maybe.
Thanks. Great thread and post. I wish we didn't need a RG because it's the position I know the least about in terms of other teams' bottom-of-the-roster Guards. Wide receivers, sure. Guards... Probably couldn't list the 32 RGs who started for each team last year.
There's an article on NFL.com about some veteran players that could get cut, not sure i agree with the author that the players necessarily will be but its interesting: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap10...enkins-mason-crosby-among-names-on-nfl-bubble Could certainly do worse than take a look at Nnamdi Asomugha though i certainly think he's unlikely to be released, i remember thinking J'Marcus Webb had potential though he hasn't played well so far at all.
I think he's somewhat less likely to be released though. In all seriousness finding guys who can contribute for you who've been cut by other teams after training camp is usually a tricky business, if you've got talent and application most teams will try and keep you around.
Wide receivers are usually a fun topic for these waiver wire claims. But this year I truly think the Dolphins may have one of the top waiver claim youngsters already on roster in Chad Bumphis. He leads all preseason wide receivers in yardage and broken/missed tackles. He's second in yards after catch (by 1 yard). Admittedly, he's played 2 games to most everyone else's 1 game.
The guy I really wanted to put here was Alvin Bailey, one of my top rookie UDFA targets this year. But the Seahawks are NOT letting him go. He's pretty much their #3 tackle on the roster now.
The Giants have some tough calls come cuts: Marvin Austin, Tyler Sash, Adewale Ojomo. Austin's the most likely to make the 53, but he's far from a sure thing. I'd like any of those three.
In terms of WRs, off the top of my head, I'm curious about Diondre Borel, but doubt the Titans drop him. It's also around the time in his career I'd expect that kid to progress and produce rewards.
Great idea for a thread... those of us scouring preseason video should be all over this Me? I've been "stuck" watching Game of Thrones (taking advantage of free HBO for the next two months)... i'm almost caught up (3 seasons... 30 hours )...
The Titans have an intriguing receiver position in general. You figure Kenny Britt, Kendall Wright and Justin Hunter are locks. They also have Nate Washington, Marc Mariani, Kevin Walter, Damian Williams and the aforementioned Diondre Borel. They have Roberto Wallace too, lol.
If you like Game of Thrones you have to see this.. On topic I wouldn't mind taking a shot on J'Marcus Webb if the price is right
i know we have a logjam at DE but i´m intruiged by Adewale Ojomo from the New York Giants, he made the team last year but barely played, would like to see him in a dolphins uniform, he is a florida native too and from the U as well, he had 4 sacks last year in preseason
I think we all agree that Michael Egnew has turned things around to where he's not in much danger of being beaten for a roster spot by Kyle Miller. But could he be beaten by some other team's cast off? It's a possibility. I don't know which TE would be the target, lol. I"m just saying it's a possibility. NOTE: Michael Egnew is the 3rd leading tight end this preseason in terms of receiving yards. LOL.
Not interested in Devery Henderson unless Mike Wallace gets hurt. The more I watch Matt Tobin's tape at Iowa the less surprised I am that he's having a good camp at left tackle and already performed well there against the Patriots in the preseason.
Michael Smith from Tampa intrigues me as a RB/KR. Adding him may depend on what Thigpen does preseason, but I just think we need to try guys in the backfield, including Thigpen (don't like our current RB situation). Smith doesn't exactly fit a big need right now, but if Thigpen doesn't toughen up some we may do well to look around. Smith rotated with Robert Turbin in college and was teammates with our man Will Davis. Shorter guy at 5'8 210, but he's thick and strong, and has wheels (4.3 at combine, though doesn't always look it on field). Maybe compares to LaRod Stephens-Howling? He's a fringe guy for Tampa at the moment, imo, will depend if they keep him primarily for special teams. But yea, I'd like to check out RBs when cuts start happening.
Michael Smith has always intrigued me as well. Problem is, as things stand we're looking for ways to stash 4 tailbacks on our roster, and that's not even counting Thigpen. I think Marcus Thigpen's two touchdowns last year buy him another year as our return specialist. Now, everyone knows what I think of Daniel Thomas. And if someone gets cut that I really like, say a Dennis Johnson or Lonnie Pryor, someone like that...I'd be all for ditching the Daniel Thomas experiment and keeping a waiver guy as a 4th tailback. But, I suppose it's not a big deal. At wide receiver I'm still head over heels for Mark Harrison but he's hurt. The Patriots knew he was hurt when they grabbed him away from the Bears. If things don't work out up in NE for him then I would definitely give him a whirl.
If the Dolphins do end up starting Josh Samuda at RG they ought to give some attention to waiver wire Centers.
I don't know about Allen Bailey but Devin Taylor was already tearing it up in that first game and I don't expect he'll get released. Joseph Fauria could though.
I wonder if the jets will try to stash Zach Rogers on their practice squad, good player...lets see they have Edwards, Holmes, Kelley, gates...Hill, that's five, if they try and stash him I'd go after that dude ..
Just saw Rogers drop a bomb in the bread basket, took his eye of the ball, but, he got behind the defense, would of been 6..I'd take him over Mcnutt and Tyms right now,
Watched more of Matt Tobin with the Eagles. If they make the mistake of letting him go, and I'm starting to think they won't no matter what the numbers game looks like, then the Dolphins need to put in a claim for him and hope they get him. He's pretty good. He absolutely shut down Jake Bequette and Justin Francis. Bequette's a disappointment in the pros but he's got a lot of physical ability that made him a 3rd round pick whereas Tobin is undrafted, so that right there kind of tells you where Tobin stands in relation. As for Justin Francis I'm pretty sure he beat our own Jonathan Martin last year for a sack. Also taking a look at some other guys. I don't know how Pittsburgh always seems to do it but they seem to always find linebackers. Kion Wilson (whom I watched at USF) and Vince Williams are no joke. If either is cut they'd have a chance of being our best linebacker backups on roster.
I like Nate but I don't think we would kick the tires on that one, he did have one of the best catches I've ever seen though, if we got him as well as Gibson I think we have the 2 best catches from last year.
A trade might be the only way the Dolphins get the kid from Iowa at OT from the Eagles. I would be really surprised if Ireland doesn't claim someone. He does most every year. Maybe not in the numbers he has recently. With all the talk about Thomas being in trouble, he appears to be in a pretty safe situation if you listen to the staff. I like Bumphis and find it hard to think they would release him, but Philbin is hard to figure at times. I wouldn't like Bumphis to be cut but I sure could see it. Who knows what is going to happen to this roster in the next couple of weeks? So let's see.
TBH, I really do not believe we are "here" any longer, what we do have is a youngish team that requires reps for the youngsters to show what they can do. Would not be adverse to picking up some Guard depth, maybe rolling the dice on Gaither, otherwise, you've to stick the young guys out on the field and let them show what they can do. J Abraham would not be a fit for us atm, neither would Washington. Not saying we have a playoff run roster, am saying we have to see what we have in camp, it looks like a talented team led by a greenish Qb, we go as far as Tannehill takes us. Basically Ryan Tannehill is our "X" factor, no unknown matter as much to our success as Mr. 17.
Well we know Miami is troubled at RG and backup tackle. With the youth of this team I could see Ireland move some late picks to roster fill. Maybe flip a 7th to the Eagles for him.
Dang. I hadn't realized how many guys they had. I liked Walter a couple years ago. Poor man's Welker at the time. In fact, given that Borel was dropped by the Packers (knows our style of offense, think he was there under Philbin in his last year there) and Bucs, maybe he's cut by the Titans and can come in to challenge for a #6WR spot if there are any injuries. Thing is, I think he'd be a downgrade. That says a lot about how strong our depth has gotten. Are either Mariani or Williams worth a look?
