I agree.

I grew up listening to the Beatles (the white album specifically) and think that if you don't at least enjoy the musical aspect of what the Beatles have to offer that you have to at least acknowledge their place in history, Lennon among them.

His solo work was decent as well. He's certainly not the first person to promote peace or anything along those lines but he tried.
