The hope was that with his passing accuracy he could be Drew Brees-like, and I think there is still that possibility. You can make up for a lot of non-prototypical other attributes with passing accuracy, which Brees has done to the tune of a first-ballot HoF career. That accuracy has to be all over the field, however. It can't be just in the short to intermediate area and to predominantly one side of the field, a la Tua's 2020. He has to improve in that way.
Drew Brees is only example of small guy with limited mobility making it. And Brees in his younger days had a stronger arm and went in 2nd rd. This guy blows his hip out with limited physical abilities goes number 5. Blows my mind how stupid a pick this was.
I think it was the owner. He wanted Tua to crank up fan excitement for the team. I am just guessing, because I have no connection to the team, no inside information, but Flores doesn't strike me as the type of coach to take a QB like Tua at fifth overall.
No Brees is an example of a guy's becoming a first-ballot HoFer who has physical attributes and abilities almost identical to the ones exhibited by Tua in college. And Brees recovered from a throwing shoulder injury mid-career (which we all know all too well). See here for more info about how Tua was regarded based on his college performance -- his accuracy was king, and against good competition: https://fivethirtyeight.com/feature...e-top-quarterbacks-taken-in-this-years-draft/
Like I said in numerous posts before. Best line, best wrs ,best Rb. I watched a **** load of film on tua. Screen pass ,slants or over the top where guys were 5 to 10 yds open. That mac jones has put up great numbers also.Elite talent to play with
Not at QB. The position is so important in the league that anybody with a ceiling thought to be elevated at any point in their career goes very early. Look at where Tannehill was drafted, and he was most certainly a project.
Agreed. Seems more to me like Flores/Grier are the type who got Rosen. Not bc they were sure he was going to be amazing, but bc they want legit competition and to see who is actually going to win games, etc. Rosen couldn't, so they cut bait. Flores had no issue putting Fitz in....this is the only thing that gives me hope. These guys care about winning more than the nonsense QB allegiance. I think Ross was the problem ... And whether it's Ross or them too, who picked Tua, I gotta think Flores will be the type to ask that we bring another good young QB in here to compete, rather than just blindly staying w Tua. This does have Ross written all over it though. Ross is a trend type guy. He went after Harbaugh bc he was a hot commodity, he went after Phailbin and Gase bc they were commodities with supposedly an "offensive mind", he also build Hudson yards in NYC, which was over hyped and also pretty much a Bust as of now..... Now Tua was this hyped up possession that he just had to have. I wonder if Flo/Grier would have taken a diff QB, or waited a draft. We may never know, but I hope Ross gets out of his own way one damn day, and I hope Flo and Grier do what they feel is best.
As long as Justin Tucker is in the league he's not a pro bowl player. Pro Bowl player means someone selected to the pro bowl. I'll even settle for an all pro.
But those college accuracy stats are incredibly deceptive. It's much like the blocking metrics and pressure stats. Tua was throwing 5 yard outs and drags, and receivers were going to the house. It he was throwing deep balls (to first round pick receivers) who were open by two or three feet. This was discussed pre-draft, and people hand wave dismissed these concerns. Yet here we are.
Right but again he was hitting those passes with pinpoint precision. The receiving talent wasn't correcting for garbage downfield throws he was making. They were running under those passes and letting them fall into their shirt pockets.
Ok dude! You make every excuse under the sun so no point in arguing with you.My opinion last year he was not an NFL Qb and he hasn't shown me anything different! Not one Elite trait!
Again, this gets into stuff I brought up months ago...but this idea that you can get a sense of accuracy from a guy throwing to wide open receivers is just not right. Take the worst QB in the NFL, and put him on an empty field, and have him throw balls at targets around the field, and trash cans to throw the ball into, and that QB will look incredibly accurate. It's one thing to throw accurately to wide open receivers, it's a completely different thing to throw to receivers who aren't wide open.
I could have lived taking him with our later pick in the first round even though I felt like that's a reach. Just not sure what anyone saw with him when he was getting #1 hype or to be taken at #5. Before he got hurt he was throwing to maybe one of the best college receiving corps of all time.
It's inconceivable to you that perhaps the best college football program in the country over the past dozen or so years has managed to recruit more than one high-quality quarterback?
So what is the deficiency a QB has that allows him to throw a downfield pass with pinpoint accuracy to a receiver who has three yards of separation but prevents him from throwing the same pass to the same spot on the field to a guy with less separation?
Well, if he is truly accurate, he can make both throws. If he’s not, one has more passes deflected or intercepted. That factors into turnovers, 3rd down conversions which are big factors into whether you win football games. It’s also important because there’s a difference between being open in college vs the NFL.
Yeah, but Tom Brady wasn't the starter on that team. And the QB who was, Brian Griese, proved to be a mediocre NFL player.
Burrow just looked so ridiculously poised and in control that year at LSU. Even when the pressure was insane, he just casually slid around in the pocket and launched 40 yard passes like it was no big deal. I don't think I've ever been as impressed with a college QB- and he kept getting better and better every week as they knocked off top-10 opponents.
What is the deficiency? It's just how humans work. You've never answered one of my questions, and I don't ask it to try to denigrate you or make fun of you...but I'll ask it again: have you ever played organized team sports? Here's an analogy: I set up a 20' wide bucket, and have you stand 30' away, and ask you to throw a golf ball into the bucket. It would be easy. Now I replace the 20' wide bucket with a 20" bucket. Now I ask you to throw a golf ball from 30' away into the 20" bucket. It's going to be very difficult. What is your deficiency?
I would honestly trade the pick straight up for Watson. Texans get their pick back and Watson is happy to be out of Houston. He seems really unhappy there. He just said they have no clear foundation.
Multiple honestly. Why would I let someones rank dictate how I can talk to them? People are all just people, none of us matter even the slightest bit.
If I'm hitting the 20' bucket dead-center on a regular basis, I'm hitting the 20" bucket on a regular basis.
Lmao. Suuuuure. I'd like to see video of you consistently dropping a golf ball into a 20" bucket from 30' away. But make it a 3 inch wide bucket instead. As you decrease the size of the bucket, the precision required goes up. Make it a cup that is only 2 centimeters bigger than the circumference of the golf ball. You'll almost never make it. Do you golf? Similar idea. A 10' putt on the practice green is no problem. 10' putt on 18 with money or a club championship on the line is a completely different story.
Yea I remember we had a few posts from last year with us discussing this at length. I never saw that from Tua.I was very upset when we drafted him.I feel that one move just put our franchise back 5 years. I have run out of patience going on 54.I want a superbowl before I die!
Again, hitting dead center of the 20 foot bucket is going to be far far easier than hitting the 20 inch bucket. You aren't a robot, and the idea that you could consistently maintain the exact motions and strength to hit dead center on a 20 inch cup is going to be much different that throwing at the 20 foot bucket. Change to the cup that is only 2 centimeters bigger than the ball, and you would almost never land the ball in that cup. There's a reason why Dude Perfect takes hours and hours to actually accomplish the trick shots they do. And they're lucky to get it once. Not doing it consistently over and over.
