Me too. Had Bumphis been playing with Geno Smith and Tavon Austin, rather than Bailey, he would probably have posted similar numbers. Were any of Bumphis' QBs at Miss State pro prospect caliber?
I hope you are right, but I guess many people tend to forget that Bess was one of the best third down receivers in the NFL while he was a member of the Dolphins. He had 321 catches for an average of 10.7 yards a catch during his time with the Dolphins. He averaged 64 catches a year during his five years here. Bumphis might run faster than Bess but I doubt he will ever have stats which compare to Bess. I realize that Bess was traded because of his salary, but I still wish he was lining up for the Dolphins in the slot. Hopefully he doesn't make the Dolphins regret trading him when the Dolphins play the Browns in a few weeks.
I was a big Bess fan from his college days, but Gibson is Bess with a bigger body. He's better at converting first downs and better in the redzone.
I have no problem with Gibson. I was just responding to comments that seemed to imply that Bumphis will end up being better than Bess in the NFL. Bess was playing as a rookie in the NFL. At this time we really don't even know if Bumphis will be on an NFL roster when the season begins. Hopefully he can be a faster Bess with the same skills as Bess, but until he shows it as a starter in a regular season game, we really have no idea if he can even hold Bess's jock strap right now.
IMO Bumphis grades out pretty similar to how Bess graded coming out. I doubt he'll ever produce as much b/c our receiving corp is better so he'll never get as many opportunities, but the skill set is similar.
