5/29 OTA notes

Interesting to read that about Misi. I wonder if Volin is confused, as I think Misi and Burnett would be playing Sam and Will respectively.

I hate when people ask defensive players how the quarterbacks look. Cameron Wake gave the 1st honest answer, saying "I hate those guys."

Dolphins CB Richard Marshall hurt his upper left leg & sat out the final portions of practice.

Wow. I have mixed emotions on this one. Feel bad for Tanne. :pointlol: The rook begins the learning process.

I expect Tannehill to need the time... Jones stepping up and getting down the ball hawk skills and continuing to be a monster tackler would be tremendous boon for the team. Be happy about it for now at least!

I have no idea why we are still wasting time with Ray Feinga. Guy is almost always hurt and just not plain good enough to even dress on game day. Time to move on from him.

Cameron Wake had better watch what or how he says things. Announcing freely that he/they are gong for " Their Heads ' is not a good thing these days to be bragging about.

Demoting Feinga to the practice squad is Jeff Ireland's favorite pastime. Whenever he has a bad day, he just demotes Feinga and all is well in Jeff's world.

I think some reports of earlier OTAs had Misi and Burnett playing both spots, no harm at this stage in getting them reps at both positions.

I haven't seen it but anyone know who will play slot in Nickel situations? My best guess is, it would be Vontae.

Just based on the press he's received for being brought in as a nickel guy, it has to be Richard Marshall at this point.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking Marshall will come in and play the outside guy and Vontae will slide in to cover the slot.

I meant Marshall will be the nickel back, not play outside. Even last year with Will Allen, Vontae was pretty much always outside.

Best thing for me is the talk of Vernon making his prescense felt..It means wake sees something..Motor, strength and raw talent...nice.

### Matt Moore was somewhat better than Ryan Tannehill, who was erratic. (David Garrard was back in Jacksonville attending to his storm-damaged home). Tannehill scrambled for two scores but failed to connect on several end zone throws and forced a pass to Roberto Wallace, which Reshad Jones intercepted and would have returned for a 90-yard touchdown if allowed to continue.

“Is every pass as accurate as it needs to be? No,” coach Joe Philbin said of the quarterback play. “Is timing of every play where we want it? Absolutely not. But we’re making good progress.”

Many of Tannehill's completions Tuesday were short passes over the middle or screens. His best throw of the day was a sideline dart to Marlon Moore. But Tannehill showed better touch in two earlier practices that were open to the media, so there's certainly no need to worry about him.

### Jones had three interceptions (two in seven-on-seven drills) but also gave up two touchdown passes to Davone Bess, both thrown by Moore… Moore threw one of Jones' picks (Tannehill threw the other two) and also was picked off by undrafted Maryland rookie Trenton Hughes... Moore made a terrific throw to Roberto Wallace, who beat Sean Smith for a touchdown.

### With Jonathan Martin still at Stanford, Artis Hicks replaced Lydon Murtha as first-team right tackle… Drops remain a problem for sixth-round receiver B.J. Cunningham…. Philbin said receiver Clyde Gates “has a ways to go” to make adjustments on “each particular coverage call. You’ve got minimize hesitation and play fast.”

### Linebacker Gary Guyton was very active Tuesday - including good work on blitzes - and Philbin sees him challenging starter Koa Misi, who’s getting first-team snaps… Cam Wake, who’s playing defensive end in a 4-3 base for the first time since his CFL days, made note of Olivier Vernon’s impressive motor: “That’s one thing you can’t teach.”

David Garrard needs to get back to practice. I can accept the rookie Tannehill having a bad day here and there as he tries to adjust to the speed of NFL defenders. But Matt Moore also throwing a bunch of picks and only looking "somewhat better" than a rookie in the midst of a bad day, that's just not right. All this stuff in OTAs mostly doesn't matter, but I have believed firmly since the day we signed him that David Garrard would get the start unless they draft Weeden, and I'm not seeing anything that challenges that viewpoint.

Love hearing Vernons motor, him opposite Wake is ****ing scary for offenses. I like Gary Guyton, hope he pushes Misi. Its a win win for our team if he does.

And I can't wait to watch all the battles in training camp on hard knocks! So awesome!

A lot of the talking heads, Mike Mayock in particular, and I think CK hit this point as well, noted that Tannehill struggled quite a bit when throwing over the middle as opposed to the outside. It'd make sense to me know to give him a bunch of reps with plays designed to go over the middle to get him more comfortable, and yeah, you might see some more interceptions, but I think it's better to train him hard in that area now before he's actually in a game.

Exactly, if he's going to make mistakes, lets have them happen in shorts during OTAs, not week 9 of the regular season.

It's the way he said it, but yes, that's exactly what he meant. Fail now, succeed later.

I just hope Vernon and Wake make a dynamic passrushing combo.
