Rookie Wideouts have a hard time adjusting many times, also we already have Marshall, paying a ton for a 2nd WR isn't smart. I love Blackmon but I don't like a trade up to get him. You have to look at the value of sending a bunch of picks away, we are not 1 WR away from contending.

 

actually getting blackmon would make us contenders because we can get offensive linemen anytime , anywhere, thenwe would have two real threats and we can use Bess in the slot and let Hartline walk and pick up another vet wr and we would be in good shape . Until this team gets a marque player or two we wont get far in the playoffs . Most important is to get a franchize qb I hope we get a big qb with a cannon of a arm at qb .

I really hope westart adding real threats into this offense instead of focusing all our money on oline and defense which what we have mostly havefocused onthe last 8 years

bring in a tightend and another playmaker at wr , get a qb , and then get 2 offensive linemen and a defensive end and next year we should be playoff ready.

 

You're comparing a guy who's 6'1'' 208 pounds to a guy who's 6'6'' 275 pounds. Big difference there. A more appropriate comparison would be to a player like Alshon Jeffery who's 6'4'' 233. Or, ironically a guy like Brandon Marshall who's 6'4'' 230.

 

What about trading back for the #2 WR, Floyd out of ND and getting a OL with the extra pick acquired?

 

How about:

-add 2 passrushers
-find a playmaking FS or Clemons or Jones develops into one

-land playmakers at:

-#2 Te
-Running Back
-have 4 or 5 credible threats at Wr

-rebuild the oline and have a high level of play from them, at RG/LG/RT

-Find a player who go over 2,000 all purpose yds like Sproles did for the Saints

 

And to perfectly honest with you, if we're going to move up for a player I would certainly hope it's not a WR. This draft is deeper at WR than any other position.

 

Problem is, our OL is a hot mess, Jerry looked like an answer at RT, but then again, he came into camp so out of shape he was placed into the doghouse, Richie I is out of position at LG, so he can be an answer at RG, but we have no credible LG types on the roster, and that is assuming Richie is athletic enough to do what Philbin wants done, if he is not, 3 newb starters in 2012, that normally means a long yr for the offense.

The thing with Wr's is, GB rarely took any with high picks, they just stuck them in their offense and they performed, iirc Jennings was a #2, Nelson a 4, Jones was like a #3, even Finley wasn't a premium pick iirc. ( he was a #3)

They also rarely spent heavily on a running back, I can recall having a discussion with Alen about James Starks and his shoulder issues, Alen turned out to be right, he was drafted, but with a #7 or so.

Big picture, to me, improve the passrush we instantly improve the Defense, we finished with 44 sacks or so, but keep in mind they got to Tebow 8 times, that skews the stats.

 

Agreed on the pass rush. That's why I want Courtney Upshaw at #9.

 

i agree we need that other pass rusher, if we can get another guy that can get after the qb we will have an elite defense

 

What I'd like to see happen is Pouncey to LG and jsut add a center either via the draft, or sign Scott Wells as a FA to play Center, that solves a ton of problems for us.

As for #8/9, I can agree in adding a passrusher, not sure who, but with the near instant success of Orakpo and Miller and Smith, it would be unwise not to add a player who can get after the Qbover a OL, and this is one area Ireland is normally good on, hitting Wake and Ware, he also had a good eye for running back talent, but missing on Misi and Thomas has tarnished that perception to me at least.

We could look at the FA bargain bin and roll teh dice on Aaron Maybin, and I expect Larry English to shake loos from SD, but still..would rather go for the sure thing, and a decade of performance, heck , Vontaze is rated as a mid 3rd rd pick via CBS, would love to have him, but he is the type of player the Ravens invaraibly pcik up and have good success with their play,.

It would help, so far they have not focused on making one unit elite under the ruberic of "smart, tough, disciplined", meaning we move away from elite talent for lesser prospects, but trading back into rd #2 to pick up a guy who will start.

As for John Jerry being athletic enough, I honestly do not know if he could make that move, it sounded to me like the draftniks thought he had the Donald Thomas problem in that he was stiff and did not drop his hips but bent his waist which is a problem for Olineman, not sure how he then did well at LT, but that is what has been said about his game.

Ask the coach we just fired and the GM thats been trying for 4 years to get a quality Oline on the field how easy it is, I'm glad you're so sure its a piece of cake, because its not a given that just signing a few guys will sure up the line, honestly its almost laughable to read how easy it is. It takes time, coaching and healthy players for the line to improve and thinking it will happen overnight basically is really wishful thinking.
We aren't Blackmon away from contention you don't trade up to get a 2nd WR, thats just bad drafting.

 

How many of these guys are still playing in the playoffs.....also the Bengals didn't trade up to get Green. I'm not saying we shouldn't draft Blackmon if he's there at 9, I'm just saying we shouldn't trade up, it would cost us a TON this year and a few picks next year and one WR is not worth that.

The only players I'd even consider moving up for are Luck or RG3. Luck is not going to happen, so basically just RG3. If you are Ireland and/or Philbin and agree he is Dan Marino with a suntan and mobility, then you offer 2 1sts, and a 2nd and 3rd and try to go get him.

 

Do you want to trade most of a draft and some of next years draft to gamble on a rookie WR? I'm not at all opposed to taking Blackmon or maybe another WR at 9 but trading up is not worth it for a WR.

 

exactly. IMO, we're closer to the model of the Giants, 49ers and Baltimore than we are with New England. And considering I'm betting money that the Giants beat the Patriots, I like that model better anyway. I know Eli is moving towards elite status, which is why we pursue a QB aggressively this offseason, but outside of that, making our good pass-rush better will help our QB and team just as much, if not more than another big WR. Our problem right now is that if you contain Wake, you contain our pass-rush.

Get our QB - hopefully Flynn turns out to be that guy
Use our 1st round pick on stud pass-rusher
Make OL our top priority in Free Agency, next to QB obviously
Use remaining draft picks on S, TE, RB, WR ...in that order

 

Nicks will get Mankins money, hopefully it has been Sparano's stubbornness that has kept Richie I at LG, for me, draft Molk or sign Wells move Pouncey to LG, Richie I to RG, Jerry to RT, that would be 4 new players in different positions on the OL but imo Sparano and that OL coach I do not like so bulloxed up the OL there may be little choice but to have that large a shuffle.

 

Nice idea but I doubt it works that way. In fact I don't see us doing anything in the draft other than standing pat.

Ok...I agree that OL are less difficult to get than a speedy WR, but 'anytime, anywhere' ?? If that's the case, why has our OL struggled since....Dwight Stephenson's career ended ??? To me, that is a bogus statement... The WRs we have fit ok in the WCO, although an upgrade with more speed would certainly make our star guy more valuable.

The biggest issue other than QB on this team has been the OL for many years...and I'd venture to say that we could have been more successful, even with the QBs we've had, had the OL done it's job... I do agree with you on the TE though. It's likely we'll have several on the roster next season...

That's two more starting picks there. That's 9 starting picks for us this year. No team will get 9 starters in teh draft and FA combined in one year.

Maybe Moore is our QB too. Philbon may say he see's teh same qualities in both. (wishfull thinking I know) If not hopefully Flynn loves the guy and wants to go where he is.
I wouldn't mind using our 1st round pick on a stud pass rusher.
Making our OL top FA priority is a good idea.
I don't know if we need a RB before a WR in the draft. Other then that I'm all in this scenerio.

If we draft a safety in the second round it had better be because Mark Barron has fallen out of the 1st. This draft class is simply atrocious at the safety position.

 

The simple crazy scenario - Peyton Manning is 100% healthy and feeling great and the Dolphins sign him.

what does Philbin think of WRs ... he may not seem to treasure them enough to spend a high pick on them -- as they aren't picked high by his regime lately. OL, specifically Ts are a different story during his tenure with GB ...

T, TE, LB or DT is what i would expect from him ... not WR or RB ... which would also mesh with Ireland's history as well if you throw in DBs.

 

If I am going to go passrusher in the 1st I would trade down and take Whitney Mercilus. The guys motor is incredible and that is the type of effort you need from your young guys.

personally dont have a huge problem with any of those positions early in the draft. Though I think Jerry is the answer at RT so I am not sure the Fins need to go that route. I dont see any TE's that are worth the top half of the 1st round. D Allen will go before our 2nd round pick. A guy to consider in the 3rd is Orson Charles out of Georgia. He is a guy that can get down the field from the TE position. DT be come a huge need for the Fins IF they stay with the 3-4 and they let Paul Soliai walk.

 

I still say we have very little chance to trade up far enough to get RGIII. Cleveland has a lot more to offer than we do with two 1st rounders this year. If we offered a first rounder this year and next, Cleveland could just offer two 1st rounders this year and one for next year. It would take half of this years picks and half of next years to even have a chance and Cleveland could still trump us if they want RGIII bad enough.
